We love this place

  • 5 of 5

This is the place to stay when visiting Hilo. We loved our visit. Apartment is very clean and comfortable, nicely decorated with an island flare and well supplied with everything you need for a short or extended visit. Island breezes, BBQ grill on deck, lemon and papaya fruit trees in the yard, stream with crawdads with a rain forest as a backdrop gives a real tropical ambiance. It is just uphill from the medical center and from downtown Hilo and near Rainbow Falls. Usually 5 degrees cooler than downtown Hilo (that's a good thing). Local beaches are near-by. Local cuisine is abundant and very good. Would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: We so enjoyed having you as our guests and are very happy that you enjoyed your stay. It's nice that you were able to get some of those yummy papaya's from the tree and enjoyed grilling outside in your own little oasis. You are right about all the great restaurants in the area with all those local flavors and locally grown ingredients. We look forward to when you are able to come back on another vacation to explore more of this beautiful island. Aloha and Mahalo

Country in the heart of the city

  • 5 of 5

Felt like coming home. Night voices were quirky enough to be soothing. Not sure I wanted to know what made the evening serenade so interesting. The apartment was just the right size and the amenities were appreciated. Equipment for water sports were welcome. I never felt unsure or unsafe, which is a plus when one is a senior single traveler. I walked up to and/or down to both the Boiling Pots and Rainbow Falls State Park sites which were each within a mile or less. I was here during Merrie Monarch and was able to access the venue, enjoy the extra attractions, and still come back to a welcoming home for the night.

Immaculate, comfortable, perfectly located spot to stay in Hilo

  • 5 of 5

Hale Breadwood is the perfect place to stay in Hilo! My husband and I were there for four nights and very much enjoyed this one bedroom, immaculate and well-furnished spot. Located in a quiet residential neighborhood well away from the road, the apartment provided a very restful retreat after full days of visiting local attractions including Rainbow Falls, literally just down the road; the Hawaiian Vanilla Plantation; Volcanoes National Park, a very direct 45-minute drive, making it easy to visit the Park to see the volcano at night as well as during the day; the Hilo Farmers' Market; the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory and many others. It's also very convenient to downtown Hilo for shopping and dining and to grocery stores and other large convenience stores should you need them. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen cozy but well stocked with anything you might need to prepare meals (we did only breakfasts and lunches). Sandy provided lots of helpful information in advance of our stay as well as when we arrived, and was available to answer any questions that came up and always responded promptly and in a most helpful and friendly manner. In typical Hawaiian fashion, we were asked to remove our shoes before coming into the apartment and Sandy even provided slippers for us just inside the door! I highly recommend staying at Hale Breadwood and would certainly do so again in a heartbeat should we find ourselves visiting Hilo again. Mahalo nui loa iā ʻoe, Sandy!

Owner's Response: We are so delighted that you enjoyed your stay so much at Hale Breadwood and on the island. We like to provide our guests with as much attraction information as possible before arriving to help with their planning. It certainly takes the pressure off of you when you have a plan already in place for your days so you can go and explore once you arrive. It sounds like you had a wonderful time enjoying Hilo and all the treasures it has to offer. We too enjoy the local produce and flowers at the farmers market along with the restaurants and shops downtown. You certainly had some wonderful adventures and memories to treasure. It was certainly a great pleasure to have such lovely guests and we would welcome you back anytime. Aloha and Mahalo

Comfortable convenient apartment close to Hilo

  • 5 of 5

Apartment was well suited for a short term rental. Fully furnished with all needs. Mostly liked the proximity to Hilo and highways. We traveled the entire island over several days always each day returning easily to the apartment. Wished there had been a lanai for outdoor seating otherwise very good rental. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and highly recommend the apartment.
