Lakehouse for Family Fun in the Carolina Foothills

Bedrooms 5
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Classic family lakehouse on the shores of a clean mountain-water lake

Our home at Lake Lanier is an idyllic lakehouse still owned by the same family who built it in the 1940s. with fresh indoor and outdoor living spaces. It is a well-maintained, clean classic place to make memories with your loved ones. The house has 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a big kitchen, comfortable den, broad porches upstairs and downstairs, and a big laundry room. The house is comfortable year-round with central air and heating upstairs plus heating and cooling wall units downstairs.

The house is on three lake lots with a long lakeshore. The new boathouse --built in 2015 -- is a great place to hang out and the perfect platform for accessing the water for boating, swimming, floating, and wading.

The water in Lake Lanier comes directly into the lake from Hogback Mountain, which is one of the giant mountains that makeup the backdrop of the lake. The clean water and the quietness of the mornings and evenings make this lake a wonderful place for swimming in the early morning when the lake is quiet or playing hard in the afternoons when the lake is hopping with boats and jet skis. The size of the lake (5 miles around by road) makes it a perfect lake for skiing and paddling. Guests at our house are welcome to use our 4-person paddle boat, 1-person kayak, 1-person canoe, and paddles.

Come for a long vacation or stay for a weekend getaway. This is the perfect location from which to explore the mountains, participate in events at the Tryon International Equestrian Center and Foothills Equestrian Nature Center, visiting Pearson's Falls, paddling or tubing the Green River, wandering around the wonder towns of Tryon, Saluda, Landrum, and Hendersonville, and so much more.

Lake Lanier is a small private lake. We have no commercial businesses on the lake, meaning that we there is no place to rent boats. The lake does not have a marina either. The landowners around the lake do have motor boats of their own, but people who do not own land are not allowed to put their boats on the lake. Our family used to have 2 motor boats on the lake, but we have sold both of them. We would very much like for you and your family to stay in our home, but you wouldn't have access to motor boats. You are welcome to use our canoe, kayak, and paddle boat, though!

Happy memories for our family

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at the Family Lake House and we have thoroughly enjoyed it both times! You can feel the love and TLC of the owners for this very special property throughout. We love to cook and while some of us especially appreciated the well appointed kitchen and the kids couldn't get enough of the lake, all of us loved the location and the level of comfort the home provided for us. We would absolutely love to stay there again when we return for our family reunion next year! Thank you, Cynthia!

Magnificent lakefront property!!

  • 5 of 5

Wow!!!!! What an amazing property!

We had a cookout with a few friends and family! Enjoyed an entire weekend there.

The boathouse is amazing! The provided paddleboard, kayak and other boats are all you need for an amazing time. We had so much fun along with relaxing nights that the disconnect from internet was spectacular.

Idyllic views and a charming cottage

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at the cottage for a weekend while in town for a wedding. We fell in love with the gorgeous property and found it very well-equipped and comfortable. The house is lovely but also baby friendly and it wasn't too difficult to wrangle our one year old in the warm setting. He loved throwing acorns into the water. I can't stress enough how gorgeous the view is...the morning sun shining off the water, the fog that lingered over the water until it warmed up, the people paddling by enjoying their time on the lake... It was perfect. We only wish we could've stayed longer to enjoy the available boating opportunities! The boat house was filled with fun water equipment we were itching to try out, and there were several life jackets there, too.

After we returned to our home 7 hours away, we realized we had left an expensive baby monitor in the cabin. Out charming host was very kind and said she would mail it to us asap.

All in all, a wonderful experience! We would love to come back.

The perfect place to enjoy your morning coffee - what a view!

  • 4 of 5

Staying in Cynthia's house was a dream fulfilled. I have admired her house from the lake since I was a child, and my family and I found it charming, comfortable, and immaculate inside and out. Obviously, this property has enjoyed lots of love from generations of family members. We were attending a family reunion on the lake and hosted a brunch on Sunday. There was plenty of room for all of our guests. The kitchen is very well stocked, a feature that wasn't mentioned in the overview. Our only reservations were the front upstairs porch which has a low wall and some uneven flooring. And this has nothing to do with Cynthia, but the lake gets very busy over the weekend which created a few anxious moments when swimming with children. Overall, I would highly recommend this Family Lake House. We hope to come back next summer for a longer stay.

Lake Lanier is a very special place, like no other. It is located in the border zones of the Carolina foothills, equally close to Tryon, North Carolina and Landrum, South Carolina. Both Tryon and Landrum are small towns with relaxed atmospheres. You could just spend your whole vacation taking it easy at the lake, which is incredibly relaxing and restful. Or, you could explore our foothills by visiting the nearby towns of Landrum, Tryon, Saluda, and Flat Rock. Just a little farther away are the small cities of Hendersonville, Asheville, and Greenville.

This region has so much beauty. You have so many options of places to explore and things to do here. Within an easy drive are Dupont State Forest, Pisgah National Forest, Jones Gap State Forest, Ceasar's Head State Park, Table Mountain State Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and so much more! You can spend your time exploring hiking trails and waterfalls, or shopping for antiques and eating in quaint restaurants.

Our Lake Lanier home is the perfect home base for cyclists who wish to explore the long, quiet, country roads of Polk County and Henderson County, NC and Greenville County and Spartanburg County, SC.. Cyclists can challenge themselves on any of the several infamous nearby big mountain climbs or take it easy on the roads through the rolling foothills. George Hincapie's cycling estate, Domestique, is just on the other side of Hogback Mountain.

Equestrians who will spend their time in Hunt Country, at FENCE, and/or at the new Tryon International Equestrian Center will find this home very convenient to the locations of their activities.

Wine afficiandos can discover the lesser know wine region of Polk County, NC whose long history and scenic landsacpes may surprise you. Nearby, are the wineries of Overmountain, Russian Chapel Hills, Mountain Brook and Parker-Binns where you can take tours and sample the locally grown grapes. Biltmore Estate, is only one-hour away, and you can go there too to tour the grand home, the vineyards, and enjoy wine tastings.
