About Carol Gilligan
This is our dream house. We built it with Vineyard architects and landscapers, taking great care to preserve the oak trees and surrounding dunes. We have been coming to the Vineyard since our youngest son was 6, and now our grandchildren are enjoying the beach our children grew up on. We are also writers and the house is a perfect winter retreat with wood stove and wonderful beach walks.
Why Carol Gilligan chose Aquinnah
We fell in love with Gay Head, now called Aquinnah, with its colorful clay cliffs and beautiful Sound and Ocean beaches. We love the secluded beach in front of the house and also the walk under the cliffs, around the corner of the island, to the ocean beach. It's an idyllic Vineyard setting, a perfect vacation home for families or couples. We've spent Thanksgiving, Christmas, and winter weeks in the house, finding it -a perfect retreat.

Paradise on Aquinnah
The property is absolutely outstanding, a true gem on a beautiful part of the island. The main area is great for gatherings, and the well stocked kitchen allows for any chef's creations. The short walk to the beach was easy, and completely quiet, plenty of toys to stock up on. Absolutely a must-visit!
This home offers casual luxury in a rustic location...and an enchanting private pathway to .a lovely part of the beach. There are books, puzzles, toys, bikes, kayaks and more to keep all generations busy all day, or lush sofas and beds for those of us who don't want to be busy! The kitchen is perfectly equipped for preparing wonderful local seafood, the deck just right for lazing in the lovely September weather. Carol is a most hospitable hostess and Charlie, the caretaker, is a gem.
We have visited the Vineyard often over the last 30 years and our stay at the Gilligan House ranks among the most memorable of those times.
We rented the house from February to mid May and left reluctantly, rested, and ready to face the world of work again. The photos don't do this house justice--the views of the Elizabeth Islands and Vineyard Sound are unobstructed and mesmerizing. From the light-filled living room one can watch sunrise and the gorgeous sunsets. With winter weather we weren't able to fully use the peaceful outdoor spaces, but we did enjoy the private access to the beach, where one can walk for hours.
The house offers a perfect combination of old Vineyard sensibility--relaxed, a hodge-podge of comfortable furnishings--with all the creature comforts--very good wifi (by Vineyard standards, excellent), big TV with cable, and a grand kitchen with every gadget for the cook and coffee addict. The owners are readers, as are we, so for the first time in our long history of rentals, we found great reading chairs and lamps everywhere. It's a remarkably convivial home.
We loved the quiet, the dark nights and starry skies, and the great walks just out the door. Aquinnah might not be for everyone, for it's not near the retail and dining centers on-island, but for time on the beach, in the water, walking, or finding a cozy spot for reading, all in great comfort, this is the place.
Really enjoyed the Gilligan house on Lighthouse Road. Very enjoyable stay with fantastic support from Carol even though she was on holiday in Europe! Very easy to deal with and very responsive. The house has an open layout with an oversized living room complete with comfy couches and views of the Elizabeth Islands. The kitchen had anything and everything one would need to cook a Vineyard feast. An added bonus was the private sandy beach which hasn't always been the case on the North shore. Fun 5 minute walk to the beach through the 'shire' and on to the beach with nary a soul on it. More house than we needed given the size of our party but is able to accommodate a large family. House was clean and comfortable and the overall layout was very relaxing.
