About the property

Three Bedroom, Three Bathroom, Historic Property On Private Beach

Situated in the heart of Casco Bay, a six minute boat ride from Portland, House Island offers exclusive private island vacationing. This 12 acre retreat offers panoramic scenic views of surrounding islands, sailboats, lobstermen, and maritime boats of all kinds. Hosting 5 private beaches, walking trails, prayer garden, kayaks, stand up paddle boards, and a 10,000 square foot sports & leisure area, House Island as all the outdoor amenities to make your stay a memorable one.

The first European's to settle in what is now known as the state of Maine landed on House Island in 1621. Fort Scamell was built during the War of 1812 and then again used during the Civil War. In the early 1900s House Island was known as the "Ellis Island of the North." Thousands of immigrants were processed on this island before being allowed to enter the country. World War II brought back the importance and prominence of this 24 acre island. This strategic point in Casco Bay proved an essential element to the safety of the entire Atlantic Fleet that was birthed there. Large iron rods embedded in the island are still visible today as these rods were the tie in points for groups of submarine nets that kept the German submarines out of the north Atlantic Fleet birthing areas.

Christina's World, sitting on the highest part of the Island where the views are so vast you can see all the way to White Mountains!...This restored prize of colonial revival invites you in with a grand promenade of landscaping to a lovely sitting porch outside patio for dining, grilling and relaxation.

Inside is a gathering family room with dining for 8 and fireplace, TV. Pantry leads you into a cozy kitchen and hall to an office with sleeper sofa and large bathroom.

Upstairs you are greeted with a large master bedroom, bath, and a walk out deck to view the grounds and see all the surrounding Island. Simply breathtaking views!

Another queen bedroom across the staircase hall and large bathroom joins up with a true cottage bunk room with 3 twin beds.

This home has 10′ ceilings and large windows to capture all the views!

Amazing Experience

  • 5 of 5

We just stayed on House Island for three nights and had an unbelievable experience. Eban and Biz went above and beyond and truly made the trip. The house was stocked with new everything (pots, pans, appliances, etc.) and looked like it had just been remodeled as well. We had tons of room outside for bocce and cornhole and loved the outdoor space, beach and dock. Also, a big shout out to Ben at Portland Harbor Water Taxi who was ready to help us out a 4 in the morning or 11 at night and gave us a tour of Fort Gorges out in the bay.

Thanks again to everyone who made our trip so great and hope to visit again in the future.

Beyond expectations!

  • 5 of 5

My family (4 adults, 3 young children, and dog) booked a last minute trip here over July 4th weekend. From the moment we stepped foot on the island we were wishing that we would never have to leave. True serenity but with so much to do, beaches, the amazing fort, golf carts to get around in, water taxi to Portland or Peaks, and a gorgeous view from every room in the lovely home and every spot on the island. A huge perk to our long weekend was Gene, owner of the water taxi service. He answered to our every need and went above and beyond. He got us fresh lobster and scallops, ferried us to wherever we wanted to go, and indulged our little ones. We truly made memories at House Island and would not hesitate to stay here again!
