Clean, comfortable, well appointed beach house

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Miner Retreat! The house is just the right size, is comfortably furnished, has a great porch, and the kitchen is very well appointed. As someone who loves to cook, I felt much at home there, and found every tool I needed to get the meal finished, and then some! In addition to the cook's kitchen, the house has beach chairs and a boogie board-- convenient since we came with our four-year-old, and that's always like moving the army. ;) The outdoor shower is really nice-- sometimes those can be pretty rudimentary, but this one was perfect-- nice enough you didn't feel like you needed another shower later, and still outdoorsy enough we didn't feel like pigs de-sanding ourselves in it. :) The area around the house is developed, and we were there during a high occupancy period, yet we usually felt like the only people around-- very relaxing. We did see more of our neighbors when we sat in the crows nest on July Fourth to watch the fireworks down at the Avon Pier-- very fun, and not overwhelming to the small person. It was my daughter's first time at the beach or seeing fireworks, and I could not have asked for a better total experience.

I have zero constructive criticisms of the property, but I do want to make others with small children/mobility challenges aware that the nearest beach to the property is very wide, so you need to add about a third of the distance from the house to the beach access that Google tells you-- it's a lotta walking in fairly deep sand. That said, it's GORGEOUS out there, and there are other drive-to beach access areas with parking not much further on NC 12 where it's easier for those with mobility challenges (or simply small legs!) to enjoy the water. We prevailed at the closer walk-in beach, and we just planned for the trekking (and enjoyed the naps afterward!). There is no place quite like that little corner of the world. We'd stay at Miner Retreat again in a heartbeat, and would recommend it to friends.

Great House

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Miner house. Jodi was very easy to work with and very fast to respond to questions. We enjoyed having the boat ramp and launching the kayak in the canal. The house was very comfortable and well equipped and in a quiet neighborhood. We really liked the screened in porch and balconies. The beach was a longer walk than I expected. It is best to have a vehicle to drive out onto the beach on Hatteras Island because the beaches are very wide and sugary sand that gets hot after 10:00 in the summer making walking to the beach difficult. Good restaurants in Avon, Buxton and Hatteras. We loved the huge, apple uglies and pastries at Orange Blossom. Get there before 8:30 or order the day before. Diamond Shoals and Hatteras Sol are two great restaurants. Bring bath tissue, paper towels, blow dryer and spices as they are not furnished.

perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here so much, with two older boys it was the perfect combination of beach and fishing. They had lots of fun catching crabs right from the canal behind the house and fishing out of the kayak in the sound. The fishing pier is close by for bigger fishing (fishing for sharks in the evening), supermarked, fresh seafood shop and restaurants close by.

Loved the deck around the house and the top deck for sun rise and sunset. House is quiet, light, comfortable and had all we needed for cooking/ playing games and reading. The outside shower room was great (I dont think any of us used the one in the house). There is a short walk to the beach.

We hope to be able to return next summer.

Great home on the canal

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here. The home felt cozy and fit our family of 4 (plus dogs) just fine. The home was remodeled a few years ago, and it was nicely done. The kitchen has nice appliances and plenty of counter space. The canal and sound view from the two decks were wonderful, and we often enjoyed the sunset from the top. The dock was great for fishing and crabbing, and the kayak was also a nice bonus. The location is close to all shops, restaurants, and the beach access locations. If you are looking to stay away from the major crowds of Nags Head area and want to be close to the Hatteras beaches, which you can drive on, this is the place to be!

Minor Relief, Major Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a week at Minor Relief and can say it was fantastic! Very quiet and calm little cul de sac right on the canal. We could drop in the kayaks for fishing or paddling the calm waters around the canal systems, perfect for the inexperienced in our family. Close to the beach and restaurants, one within walking distance. Inside the house is well equipped, and the outdoor shower became the most coveted in the house. Altogether highly recommended with a super responsive owner, will stay here again. Five stars!

Great Hidden Gem in Avon!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Miner relief for a quick getaway to Hatteras. The house was perfect for us! What a last minute find! On a quiet cul de sac street close to everything in Avon. Enjoyed evenings on the screened porch watching the sunset sky. Our dog enjoyed the yard and dips in the canal. Launching kayaks and SUP's right from the boat ramp at the house made adventures for the kids easy. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking. The open area of living room, kitchen and porch was such that everyone could socialize while preparing family dinners. The house is comfortable, well stocked, clean and neat.
