Lovely family-friendly home in delightful Deal
We had a very enjoyable repeat visit to Lavender Cottage in Deal: my husband and me, our daughter and son-in-law and our grandson, nearly 2. The weather was not brilliant but luckily we were all happy to spend time indoors in this family home which is very comfortable and well-equipped, with items such as a toddler booster seat and travel cot which proved very useful and reduced what we had to bring with us. Our grandson loved the summer house – a second house at the end of the garden in his mind – and he made many visits there. We had a good Indian takeaway, enjoyed fish and chips and shopped locally to cook at home where it was helpful to have some of the basic condiments etc provided. I have read the comments below on cleanliness, and have to say that if there was a dip in cleaning thoroughness during the summer it was certainly not visible during our stay – the house was clean throughout and the kitchen had everything we needed to prepare and cook meals. One of the advantages of Lavender Cottage for us is that we are renting a child-friendly family home, so we are not on edge having a toddler with us in case he marks something or might damage something fragile. We hope to be back again soon!
Kitchen was disgusting, fridge/freezer full of half eaten food, shelves, door seals & hinges dirty. Looked like they hadn’t been cleaned for months. Cupboard doors & handles sticky. Inside of cupboards not cleaned and also full of half eaten food. Even the washing up bowl was dirty. Had to wash everything before we could use it, even glasses. Pans on open shelf & full of dust & hair. Downstairs toilet full of cobwebs & painted over damp patches, that was when we eventually got in it as there was no door handle! Electric to sockets was extension leads plugged in to extension leads with inner wiring exposed in front bedroom. Bathroom sink dirty & stained, shelf covered in dust & hair, hole in the floor behind the sink. Couldn’t get to the summer house as garden was so overgrown. Reported this to the owner who just said it was marketed as family friendly & well utilised! She did offer to send a cleaner which we declined as it wasn’t something that could be tackled in a couple of hours. Needs a thorough deep clean! Deal itself is lovely but stay somewhere else! Photographs can be provided.
Thank you for your comments. I am glad that you enjoyed the lovely town of Deal.
Regarding the house itself, as indicated to you during your stay, a full inspection was carried out after your departure. As a result of this inspection, the planned replacement of the fridge freezer and cooker was brought forward and these items are now in place.
Having now read your review, the electric appliance leads in the bedroom will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced without delay.
Regarding your other comments about cleanliness, as you mentioned, we did offer to send a cleaner around as soon as you contacted us with concerns around cleanliness. We were upset that you were unhappy with the condition you found the property in and wanted to do what we could to make your visit comfortable. As we mentioned at the time, we would have worked around you so that this could take place while you were out.
The property has a cottage-style, wildlife-friendly garden, which you visited in September when certain plants and flowers are flourishing. However, as you’d specifically mentioned wanting to use the summer house when you made your booking, we’d taken trouble to trim back the buddleia bushes immediately before your visit to ensure ease of access.
Needs a good clean
The house is fairly well located. Parking was an issue one day. But we found the house was simply not clean enough and needed some maintenance. For example, we could not shut the bathroom door which is a pain when there are four of us staying. The shower is a tap over the bath which was very temperamental. For cleanliness, for example the fridge was dirty, cups were lined with tea stains and the sink and bin were dirty. There was a jar of half used m curry paste in the fridge. There were no tea bags either. We just didn’t expect any of that.
Many thanks for your comments, I hope you enjoyed the lovely seaside town of Deal.
Thank you for raising your points to our attention. Dealing in turn:
- parking: I’m sorry to hear that you had difficulty parking on one occasion. We can share information with visitors in advance about parking options if there is no space immediately outside the house.
- maintenance: we continue to make home improvements on the house, and we will look at the bathroom door immediately. It does shut, but can be tricky to lock. The shower head flows from the bath taps, and will be affected if you are using water elsewhere in the house (for example, if washing up in the kitchen) which might explain why you found it temperamental.
- cleanliness: I’m sorry that you had concerns about cleanliness of the house, and we are looking into this immediately. The house is family owned and we make regular visits to enjoy Deal and the sunny garden. Occasionally we leave unfinished items in the fridge for others to enjoy to avoid waste. The fridge is due to be replaced shortly.
- As a rental property, we do not stock supplies such as coffee/teabags, but as a gesture to guests, we invite them to use condiments, oils, spices, and sauces that we already have stocked to avoid them having to bring or buy their own.
Thank you again for taking the time to comment and for staying at Lavender Cottage.
Perfect house, fabulous location
Clean, lovely decor and artwork
Weekend in Deal
Lovely cottage lots of atmosphere
Great location, only a short walk to Deal Castle, the beach, pier and shops. Lavender Cottage was very homely and comfortable and just perfect for the family (including the dog!).
The historic town of Deal is an undiscovered gem which has its own Tudor castle, an attractive pier and a conservation area with delightful, quaint buildings round every corner. It has a rich maritime history, including sea battles, smuggling and an association with Lord Nelson.
In addition, Deal offers quirky gift shops, a Saturday market, and excellent restaurants, cafes and pubs. Allow yourself time to cycle or walk in either direction along the front, taking in sea views, other historic buildings such as Walmer Castle and the stunning, famous chalk cliffs of Dover.
As part of your stay travel further afield: Sandwich, Canterbury and Margate all have much to offer. A favourite attraction of ours is the Turner Art Gallery at Margate. Alternatively, explore the Kent countryside-The Garden of England.
