Vouliagmeni is the best place to base yourself for a longer holiday. With its manicured boulevards, private beaches and nautical clubs, compact Vouliagmeni is easily the most self-aware Riviera postcode. But it's also a great natural beauty that can be explored on foot. A marina and a brace of private beaches are its trademarks whereas the picturesque harbour offers stunning views of the distant Saronic Gulf islands. Astir beach (1,5km) on Apóllonos Street with its excellent facilities and blue flag certification for cleanliness is one of Attica’s most luxurious and most popular beaches (with cabanas, sun beds, volleyball courts, water-sports, cafes and dining options).
Other great beaches spanning the coast are: Loubarda, Agia Marina, Iliopoulos, Mavro Lithari, Eden and Saronida. Just on the opposite side lies the public beach, which has no facilities and therefore no entry fee. If we add the bustling nightlife, the elegant cafes and restaurants, Vouliagméni is definitely a summer hotspot that you cannot afford to miss!
It is also famous for a wooded area with two small peninsulas, Kavouri and Lemos, which have some very nice pay beaches, some free beaches and some nice swimming areas off the rock.
Extra Tip: Vouliagmeni, which means sunken, is famous for Lake Vouliagmeni, which has healing properties and is the closest natural spa (with mineral and brackish waters) to Athens, open all year round. A miracle of nature: green water with a temperature of 20-29 C, embraced by red rocks. These natural hot springs with labyrinthine underwater caves were formed by the precipitation in what was once, in prehistoric times, a huge cave. It has been declared a natural monument and belongs to the pan-European network of protected Natura 2000 areas. Wading through the brackish grottos, with tiny black fish nudging your toes, you feel like you're in an exclusive spa town.
Where to eat:
Opposite the lake is Labros, a fish restaurant that has been a Vouliagmeni institution since 1889. You get prime views of Vouliagmeni Bay from the roomy terrace. There is also the added entertainment of watching young Greeks cliff-bomb from the taverna's popular diving rocks.
Just around the bay in Kavouri, beachfront Garbi restaurant has a loyal following thanks to its potent sunset views and outstanding meze. High notes are the wined eggplant, zucchini balls with avocado sauce, and grilled octopus.
Glyfáda: one of the most elegant districts of Athens, Glyfáda stands out for its sandy palm-fringed beaches, its cosmopolitan clubs (where the pulse of the Athens nightlife beats), its boutiques and restaurants as well as its marinas, a much preferred yacht-mooring place for a getaway!
Extra tip: if you are a golf enthusiast you will be thrilled with the Glyfáda Golf Club, the city’s modern 18-hole course!
Voúla: just two miles south of Glyfada lies Voúla, home to two amazing organised beaches and the Riviera’s biggest beach clubs. Enjoy during the day a colourful summer setting that brings to mind a real amusement park with modern beach bars, jet ski equipment, beach volleyball courts, a vibrant dance deck and exciting waterslides, whereas at night you can enjoy a cocktail in one of the district’s elegant clubs!
Extra tip: Voúla A’ beach has been awarded a blue flag this year, which makes it ideal (and safe!) for families as well. On Voula B’ beach disabled people can also enjoy a swim thanks to the special infrastructure that has been installed on the beach.
Várkiza: Beyond Vouliagméni lies the bustling little resort of Várkiza, where an outstanding seascape unfolds with impressive coves below the coastal road. You will have the chance to swim in free or organised beaches with azure waters, to exercise your favourite water sports or enjoy a delicious meal in a picturesque taverna by the sea while sipping a glass of ouzo which perfectly complements fresh seafood!
Extra tip: Windsurfing enthusiasts will be thrilled to exercise their favourite sport in Várkiza since it is considered to offer the best windsurfing infrastructure!
The coastal road continues through marvelous tourist resorts such as Lagonissi and Saronida and ends at Cape Sounio (40km), Attica’s southeastern tip. There you will find the impressive Temple of Poseidon – the last piece of the ancient Athenians’ homeland every time they sailed into the Aegean. Watching the sunset filling the sky with every shade of mauve and pink and making the sea glowing like a sapphire is an unforgettable experience that will weave a powerful spell over you.
