Mauna Loa Shores unit 108, also known as Hale Honu, is your perfect base for exploring the Hilo area and the rest of the Big Island. Well located and affordable, Mauna Loa Shores is a favorite among visitors, whether staying three nights or three months. It's just a stone's throw from the ocean - close enough to hear the waves breaking! Located in Keaukaha, Hilo's beach park district, the building is next to Carlsmith Beach Park, a lovely spot for swimming and snorkeling that is often visited by the green sea turtles, or honu, from which the condo takes its name.
Entering Hale Honu, you'll notice the beautifully upgraded kitchen to the right. Granite counter tops, high end appliances - including a dishwasher and fridge with ice dispenser - and quality cookware and utensils make the condo a joy to cook in. Of course, if cooking on vacation is not your thing, just head across the street to the Seaside Restaurant for a fine selection of island cuisine.
Hale Honu's furnishings are stylish, well-made and comfortable, from the lovely wood dining table with seating for four to the recliners and large, overstuffed sofa. Framed paintings and photographs adorn the walls, depicting hula, ocean scenes , tropical flora and fauna. The coffee and end tables house a variety of area-centric reading materials, including local culture, travel guides, and Hawaiian fiction.
Head out to the lanai where you saddle up to the table to enjoy drinks, dining and a garden view. Or grab one of those books you were eyeing and settle into one of the wicker chairs to get your read-on.
The condo offers two bedrooms. The Makai (towards the ocean) bedroom boasts a king bed, a huge closet and a large wall mounted television with cable reception and Netflix. The Mauka (towards the mountains) bedroom has a comfy queen bed and another large closet. In between is the bathroom, providing all the necessities including a shower / tub combo.
The Mauna Loa Shores building's amenities include laundry facilities on every floor and a swimming pool with surrounding patio area equipped with many lounge chairs. There are numerous beach parks stretching for several miles along Kalanianaole Ave. The Hilo Bayfront district and many other Hilo sights and activities are within a 10 minute drive. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about 45 minutes from Mauna Loa Shores.
