Built in 1775, this historic home and estate by the Delaware River between New York and Philadelphia form the ideal setting for family gatherings for several days or more.
With its spacious interior, a tennis court, pool, pool house coal grill and pond on the property and a public bike path on the edge of the property, Boxwood will please the homebody lingering in the living room, the sports-minded and the outdoorsy, all in the same family or group of friends.
Think of it as joyful and casual living rather than high-tech suburban hotel. You'll have complete privacy in the house and the pool and pool area (except under exceptional circumstances for the pool/pool area, as will be explained prior to finalizing your reservation). You'll have non-exclusive use of the tennis court since family members and friends occasionally use it. This will also be explained in detail prior to finalizing your reservation.
Beyond the property, leisure and sports cyclists will both enjoy having a canal-side bike path right nearby. You can spend an hour or a day biking up along the canal and the river to the riverside towns of Lambertville, New Hope, Stockton and more. Your first stop, however, by bike or car or even on a healthy run could be historic Washington Crossing, with its history-rich parks on either both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey sides of the Delaware River.
For daytrip or an evening of theater and gastronomy, Philadelphia is just a 45-minute drive away. New York is 70-90 minutes away by train from the Trenton station, a 10-minute drive from the house.
The house's bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen are comfortable and functional. Air conditioning is a combination of window units in some rooms and central air in some portions of the house.
A formal living room, a cozy library, an authentic bar and a spacious family/TV room make this a special setting, particularly for family get-togethers. The setting may not be appropriate for young adults seeking a party place with high tech amenities. We discourage all-night reveling and, while Boxwood is an exceptional property for the area, it is not a luxury hotel. We are instead looking to create and maintain a relaxed and enjoyable country-in-the-suburbs environment. If you see some peeling paint or a goose dropping on the lawn, if leaves blow into the pool after a windy night, consider it part of the charm of Boxwood.
Families especially enjoy Boxwood, though due to the presence of a pool and a pond guests must decide for themselves whether the setting is appropriate for small children. Renters assume full responsibility for use of the facilities and must supervise minors at all times. The pool (unheated) is filled from late May through Labor Day weekend. Depending on the weather, it may be filled mid-May but that not be guaranteed in advance. If interested in renting in September in the two weeks following Labor Day and would like to be assured that the pool is open, you should specifically request that PRIOR to finalizing your reservation.
Family gatherings, adult vacations, two family travels and corporate off-site events are among possibilities that lend themselves well to enjoyment of the house and of the estate.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Rental rates noted here are exclusively for the number of guests up to 10 that you indicate when renting. There may be additional bedding for 2 or 3 additional guests, at extra cost per person. Additional daytime or nighttime guests are sometimes allowed but only by previous agreement and with additional payment. Therefore, please indicate the maximum number of guests and ages of any children when making a reservation request.
The 6 bedrooms are on the second and third floors. There are 3 bathrooms on those floors, each share by 2 bedrooms.
To avoid any misunderstanding for those inquiring about using the property for a party, wedding or other event: We are open to the possibility of special events that include day visitors, such as a birthday or graduation party or a small wedding or corporate event of up to 50 people. The cost for holding such an event is NOT the same as the cost for normal overnight rental as there may be much involved in terms of planning, organization, parking, security, equipment rental, etc.
