About Christine Cole
We are generations on this property. The main house, The Berry Patch Vacation Home, was the home of JHP Howard and his family. The River Cottage was the home of his mother, Granny, who bought the property in 1939 to give to her son. Five generations later, these homes are being offered for you to enjoy while vacationing along the great McKenzie River.

Why Christine Cole chose Walterville
The history alone makes this a wonderful place to visit. However, the location is so beautiful and the access to the river a rare find, with the "pond" being a safe place for children and the main corridor of the river for fishing and boating.
What makes this Cottage unique
This property is tucked back and away, so the peace and quiet is fabulous. Additionally, there is no match for the wide calm area of river below the cottage, which makes swimming, floating, and wading safe and available. During July and August, the 5-acres of blueberries are there for you to pop into your mouth just outside your door. There is NOTHING more delicious than a sun-warmed blueberry! Plus, if you want to take blueberries home, the manager will show you how to pick and send you off with buckets to the very best rows. The cost of these berries is far less than you will find in the stores, too!!

The property was wonderful, our kids had a great time picking blueberries and trying to fish. Easy communication with management, simple check-in process. The only reason I gave 4 stars was that they charged extra daily fees for every person above 2 people, though the listing states that the cottage sleeps 4-5. We were 2 adults and 2 small children so we ended up paying much more per night then advertised. I still think the price is worth it, just be aware of the "add ons". Overall, we had a great stay.
Go Ducks! And wild turkeys....
We came up from Southern California for my daughter's U of O graduation. Everything in Eugene was sold out - but I was able to snag this piece of Paradise for the rest of the family to stay at.
It. Was. Heaven.
We fell asleep each night to the sound of the river, and woke up to the neighborly wild turkeys running thru the yard.
It's a good 30 minute drive from the university, but it let us decompress from the craziness of the commencement activities. We can't wait to go back - next time hopefully in July when the berries are ripe!
The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans and a nice coffee maker. The washer dryer unit came in handy as there was some swimming in the water just down the path. The only thing I missed was a hair dryer, but I lived. Imagine that??!!
Also, we spent some time trying to enter the larger house (lol) - the cottage is actually next door, to the left of the house with the address. We were pretty tired after the drive from Portland!
Thank you so much Sarah & Christine - you were amazing hostesses :)
Quite place near the river
We stayed here early September 2018 for two nights with three people. This place is great for small family--I suppose 6 can be accommodated but 2-4 people is best based on size. It has a great view of the river and is on a hillside about 20-40ft up from the river. There is an easy path down and small beach like area where you can enter/dip your toes in the river / pond area. The picture view from the deck is exactly what you'll get. Pros: Very quite (neighbor/noise wise), river sound/rustling of leaves in wind, cozy, great deck with grill for viewing/relaxing, very dark at night (can see stars), easy access to river and safe swimming (you won't be swept away in currents). The place is a little older so expectations should not be too high on that--it is rustic, but not too rustic. Cons (minor): It has a Smart TV with Netflix access but no local channels/tv stations (antenna maybe could be added), few cobwebs/spiders seen (rustic), slight smell to place, and if you use grill bring long nose lighter to help light the burners. We all slept well and enjoyed our few nights of R&R. This place is centrally located between the big city (20 mins) and the mountains (~1-2 hr). We can recommend this place and give it 4/5 stars.
The cottage provided everything we needed. Peaceful setting, view of the river from the house and access to the river. The house was just as seen in the pictures. Yes, it's an older cottage but well taken care of and very clean. I've rented homes for 30+ years and this was the first house that actually had a nonstick frying pan that didn't look like it had been dragged down a gravel road (sorry personal pet peeve). Another nice touch was there were new containers of condiments and butter already in the fridge, which was a nice touch. The house works nicely for a couple and possibly some small children if you're willing to share the bedroom. I would recommend this home. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 only because of the age of the property. Thanks Christine for sharing the cottage.
Beautiful and very serene spot
Great spot to decompress. Beautiful view of the river from a very clean and neat cottage with a really nice deck overlooking the river. Picking berries in the berry patch and then putting them on Umpqua vanilla ice cream is a must if you stay here.
The Berry Patch River Cottage
This property lives up to its name, there are lots of berry's to pick and the cottage is right next to the river. The river view off of the back deck is awesome and the cottage is cute and comfortable. It is private and we felt safe with letting the kiddos run around in the morning to pick fresh berry's to add to our pancakes. We didn't have any luck with fishing the deep pool in the river, but Leaburg Dam has some of the best Steelhead fishing around. We would stay there again and my wife thought it was perfect for a family of four with and 6 and a 5 year old.
The Berry Patch is just 30-minutes from Eugene-Springfield, a bustling university metropolis. You will find everything you need there, that is if you feel like leaving the peaceful riverside ambiance of the Berry Patch.
