****Breakwater Cottage is a licensed tourism establishment with a 4 star Canada Select rating.

Breakwater Cottage is a quaint, renovated 19th century fisherman's cottage perched on the side of Big Hill in the historic fishing village of Petty Harbour - 15 minutes from downtown St. John's. A March 2014 Canadian Press article said this of Petty Harbour, "...south of downtown St. John's, it's one of the most photogenic seaside towns in the province." Blessed with spectacular panoramic views of the harbor, surrounding hills and Motion Bay, you can watch passing fishing boats, crashing waves and occasional whales, otters, bald eagles and icebergs from the 500 square foot wrap around deck. The beautifully landscaped grounds feature an array of perennials and stone walls and are regularly visited by birds and butterflies. The cottage and neighborhood are recognized for their beauty and have appeared in television commercials (NL Tourism -2011, Rogers Communications -2010), Hollywood films (Rare Birds – 2001, Orca – 1977) and a 2005 Explore magazine article on the East Coast Trail that is only steps away.

A great base for visits to St. John's and surrounding area, Petty Harbour itself offers activities such as zip lining with North Atlantic Zip Lines, whale watching with Ocean Quest, fabulous meals at Chafe's Landing Restaurant, coffee at the Watershed Cafe, craft shopping at Herbie's Old Shoppe, the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium and the Island Rooms/Fishing for Success. The cottage is fully equipped and perfect for small families/groups, couples or professionals coming to St. John's on shorter term work contracts or for conferences. Come stay at Breakwater Cottage for your next visit to St. John's. You'll be right next door, but a world away...

A Perfect Fit For Us

  • 5 of 5

We loved everything about this cottage. From the gorgeous wrap around deck to the incredible views of the fishing boats and harbour. We spent 9 cheerful, relaxing, fabulous days here. The cottage was spotless and we were supplied with all the amenities we needed, and then some. The kitchen was especially well equipped. We loved meeting the neighbors and the fishermen down on the wharf. We fell in love with the gentle people of Petty Harbour. It was a quick drive in to St. John's and we did a fair bit of touring, including Cape Spear which is close by. We hope to return some day, and next time will stay longer as this was a perfect fit for us. Thank you so much for everything.

Beautiful Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We've just spent two weeks at Breakwater Cottage and it was the nicest vacation we have ever had. The cottage is located in a working fishing village with a view of both the harbour and the ocean, the views are not only interesting they are also spectacular! The wrap-around deck proved the perfect spot to read our books and just take in the amazing ocean air, as well as whatever activity was going on in the village.

At the same time the cottage is a very quiet and peaceful spot. The windows open to the sea air were absolute bliss during the night for sleeping, we haven't had such good rests in years! This vacation was such a welcome break and relief from our busy urban life in Ontario.

Geoff and Elizabeth are absolutely lovely hosts, so attentive and helpful with terrific tips on any activity. We did lots of really amazing hiking on the East Coast Trail (one section of the trail, a particularly beautiful one over Motion Bay, is easily accessed by foot from the cottage). We saw whales almost every day, on one afternoon they were just outside the harbour so we had front row seats from the deck of the cottage! We went to great restaurants, all on the recommendations of our hosts, our favourites were Chafe's Landing (right in the village!), The Merchant Tavern on Water Street (great cocktails and oysters) and Pillato on Duckworth Street for amazing pizza.

The cottage itself is beautifully decorated and has a superior level of comfort. The beds are made up with hotel linens and gorgeous duvets. There were loads of fluffy towels and plenty of hot water. The windows are fitted with blinds to ensure a sleep-in if desired and the entire cottage is well-organized and perfectly clean. The kitchen is so well-equipped, we wanted for nothing and we cooked many meals at the cottage. The laundry machines are a welcome bonus and you must use the outdoor clothesline for truly beautiful smelling clothes dried in the air from the sea. Bliss!

We have rented vacation homes in England, France, Italy and many spots throughout the USA but this was by far our best experience. It's not the norm to find a vacation rental that ticks all of the boxes, and to have find it in such a wonderful spot as Petty Harbour Newfoundland really makes this rental a true gem. Be sure to check out the many books and DVD's on the history of Newfoundland that are provided as well, so interesting.

We can't wait to get back to Breakwater Cottage! Thank you Geoff and Elizabeth.

Owner's Response: Wow Danielle! Thank you so much for that wonderful and comprehensive review. You, Peter and the kids really had the full Newfoundland experience and you captured it so nicely with your writing. We really appreciate the positive comments on the cottage and comparison to vacation rentals in different parts of the world. In this our second season it's nice to know we're hitting the mark. Glad you enjoyed our tips and I really enjoyed the chat we had on the deck. You mentioned a potential return visit down the road so we look forward to seeing you again. Geoff and Elizabeth

Beautiful Cottage on the Harbour

  • 5 of 5

Breakwater Cottage was everything that we hoped it would be. I was travelling with 2 friends and we spent 3 nights at this great location just outside of St. Johns. The place was very tastefully decorated with soft towels, comfy beds, and individual soaps set out on the beds for us upon arrival. The wrap around deck provided a great spot for morning coffee with an amazing view of the harbour and village area. Geoff left us condiments in the fridge, along with coffee, teas, spices, and a large jar of olive oil. Communication was easy and Geoff responded quickly to any question I had before our trip. Entry was simple with a door code that he provided to me by email. We had everything that we needed in the kitchen for preparing meals. The gardens around the cottage were beautiful and just as pretty as you see in the picture. As we were leaving the cottage, we met Geoff and Elizabeth and their two young children....what a lovely family!! I would definitely go back to this place and highly recommend it to others.

Amazing introduction to Newfoundland!

  • 5 of 5

Breakwater Cottage took our breath away! Situated in a Harbour village out of another, more serene time, the cottage offers stunning views of the bay and the village, is exquisitely appointed, and offers absolutely everything one could wish for in terms of comfort and ease...

Our hosts, Geoff and Elizabeth, define gracious generosity, and should be considered the standard bearers in the hospitality industry!

Without reservation, we highly recommend Breakwater Cottage should one ever be so fortunate to travel to Petty Harbour,

We will be back!😊🇨🇦⛴⚓️🐳
