****Breakwater Cottage is a licensed tourism establishment with a 4 star Canada Select rating.

Breakwater Cottage is a quaint, renovated 19th century fisherman's cottage perched on the side of Big Hill in the historic fishing village of Petty Harbour - 15 minutes from downtown St. John's. A March 2014 Canadian Press article said this of Petty Harbour, "...south of downtown St. John's, it's one of the most photogenic seaside towns in the province." Blessed with spectacular panoramic views of the harbor, surrounding hills and Motion Bay, you can watch passing fishing boats, crashing waves and occasional whales, otters, bald eagles and icebergs from the 500 square foot wrap around deck. The beautifully landscaped grounds feature an array of perennials and stone walls and are regularly visited by birds and butterflies. The cottage and neighborhood are recognized for their beauty and have appeared in television commercials (NL Tourism -2011, Rogers Communications -2010), Hollywood films (Rare Birds – 2001, Orca – 1977) and a 2005 Explore magazine article on the East Coast Trail that is only steps away.

A great base for visits to St. John's and surrounding area, Petty Harbour itself offers activities such as zip lining with North Atlantic Zip Lines, whale watching with Ocean Quest, fabulous meals at Chafe's Landing Restaurant, coffee at the Watershed Cafe, the Petty Harbour Mini Aquarium and the Island Rooms/Fishing for Success. The cottage is fully equipped and perfect for small families/groups, couples or professionals coming to St. John's on shorter term work contracts or for conferences. Come stay at Breakwater Cottage for your next visit to St. John's. You'll be right next door, but a world away...

Delightful home in a lovely area

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four adults had a great time enjoying Breakwater Cottage together. The house is charming, fully equipped, full of interesting Newfoundland decor and even had a selection of local music to enjoy. The location in Petty Harbour is perfect for just watching the fishing boats from the comforts of home, or for heading out to explore the nearby coastal areas. The East Coast Trail up the hill from the nearby dead end street is definitely worthwhile, offering fantastic views of the coast, all the way to Cape Spear! The iceberg viewing up there was also fun, but not as great as watching the bergs from the front deck of the cottage! Just amazing! Thank you Geoff and Elizabeth for a wonderful stay.

A superb vacation rental.

  • 5 of 5

We ( 4 women) could not have found a more perfect way to start our vacation in Newfoundland. The house was delightful with everything we needed to be very comfortable. We arrived very late, Geoff and Elizabeth left lights on, the heat up and even a beautiful bouquet of flowers on the island to welcome us. There were also breakfast things left for us in the fridge. Petty Harbour is a great location, lots to do and within easy driving distance from St. John's. Great hiking nearby. Geoff checked in by phone and dropped by one evening, what a lovely gracious host.

If any of us return to Newfoindland we will definitely stay here again. We can't recommend it highly enough.......and we have all travelled a lot and are very particular about our accommodation. Thank you, Geoff and Elizabeth.

Beautiful, peaceful & safe.

  • 5 of 5

Breakwater cottage exceeded my expectations. Impeccably clean & decorated. The views from the wrap around deck are second to none. Beds are very comfortable. The small things like Newfoundland coffee, soap & lip balm...very nice touch. This is a great place for families but I also recommend it for someone travelling alone looking to get away from it all to rest & reflect. Maybe even a writer looking for will find it at Breakwater Cottage ,Petty Harbour. 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️s!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review Sandra. We're glad you got a chance to see that iceberg off Middle Cove. We saw it the day before on a family trip to the beach and thought you'd enjoy it. Nice to hear you found the cottage to be like a home away from home as that's what we've aimed to provide (in an amazing, unique location). We hope to see you again if you make it back this way. Our stay at Breakwater Cottage was definitely a highlight of our trip. Located a short 20 minute drive from St. John’s in the small village of Petty Harbour it was the perfect place to experience some of what Newfoundland has to offer. The cottage itself is quaint, beautifully furnished, and comfortable, we felt immediately at home. Geoff and Elizabeth have outfitted the cottage with every consideration for their guests. The views from the deck are spectacular. Geoff kept in touch with us and looked after our every need.

Petty Harbour is a lovely little village and is a great place to stay. The restaurant and coffee shop are definitely worth a visit. We spent most of our time touring the Avalon Peninsula and found the scenery to be beautiful and the small villages a delight. Breakwater is an easy commute to Cape Spear, St. John’s, the Irish Loop and the Baccalieu Trail. It was so lovely to return to the comfort of Breakwater Cottage after a day spent exploring.

Thank you Geoff and Elizabeth for providing such a great accommodation. We would highly recommend Breakwater Cottage.
