Stone Wall Mountain is rich in history. Billions of years old, Stone Wall Mountain rests along the northern rim of the Boston Mountain, part of the Ozark Mountain Region. The ancient Ozark Mountains, not unlike the Grand Canyon, were caused by erosion, not Tectonic Plate upheaval. Stone Wall Mountain was part of a territory that was populated by various tribes of Native Americans over thousands of years. This mountain was settled in the 1700s by Native American Qua-paw Indians. The name of our state, 'Arkansas', was labeled by Lewis and Clark when their Indian Guides identified the tribe by mispronouncing 'Qua-paw'. To Lewis and Clark it sounded more like 'Ar-Kan-Saw'. In the 1800s some Native American Cherokee Indians, forced westward from Tennessee, settled in this area, and on Stone Wall Mountain. They were driven from the area by the mid 1800s. Around 1856 Confederate Soldiers encamped atop Stone Wall Mountain and erected a still existing rubble stone wall encompassing the entire mountain rim. In the late 1800s the U.S. Government sold land tracts to settlers, including our 62 acres. As far as we can track, one of the first families to settle on this mountain were Irish immigrants who homesteaded through tough times, and who helped add to our mountain walls. On Stone Wall Mountain, the remains of an old root cellar, a hand dug stone-lined well, along with the rubble stone wall, still remain as a testament of the tenacity of many Americans on this beautiful land. The 150 year old rubble stone wall which rings our entire mountain top inspired our naming the mountain 'Stone Wall Mountain'.

Renting this property for the week was the best decision my family could have made. The place was beautiful and quiet and very well kept. The caretaker was very nice. We will definitely be renting again.

Very nice place with an exceptional view

  • 4 of 5

This was a very cozy home with a spacious floor plan. The view outside the home coupled with the privacy was excellent. The drive to the house was one of the only few things less exhilarating. The other was the fact of no Satellite TV as specified in the listing. So bring a movie or two if you want something other than the three channels. But this was an overall very good experience. The customer service seemed on point with a good line of communication. I would recommend this place for a large family who enjoys the view paired with privacy. The overall accommodations were great, as is the history which surrounds it.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review. We found that the tv channels provided over the airwaves seemed sufficient for most travelers. Most travelers spend their time outdoors at Stone Wall Mountain. It is on top of a mountain, so there were about 20 channels to choose from. We will check the antenna to make sure we have an abundance of channel options.

Beautiful home and setting!

  • 5 of 5

This home is as advertised or better. It's very spacious, well decorated, and comfortable. We had two adults, two teens, and one 5-year-old and the house could have comfortably accommodated several more. The view to the west is wonderful and we saw many deer in the yard and on the drive down to town. A trail that begins near the fire pit leads down to Lake Leatherwood. On the way down I saw a group (5 or 6) wild hogs scurry up the hill to get away. Overall just an outstanding setting for nature lovers.

A couple notes:

1. The walk down to Lake Leatherwood is very nice but the return home is steep and strenuous. Be prepared.

2. This house is accessible via two long-ish but well-maintained dirt drives. As the check in instructions state, one of the two drives up to the house is shockingly steep! It should only be considered with the right vehicle and in the right weather. I did use it without incident during dry weather and in a 4WD truck but a typical passenger car is a no-go for sure.

3. Whoever built all the rock walls had a LOT of energy and/or time on their hands :)

I definitely recommend this place and we'll be back.

Great place! Will definitely be back to bring the family.

  • 5 of 5

Rented for weekend for a guys weekend. Place was better than pictures. It was clean, plenty of space and scenery was great. Everything worked, warm water was a bit tricky but no complaints.

Drive into the actual place is a bit rough but well worth it once you get there. We left several times going downtown Eureka and back and had no issues.

Would love to bring the kids down to experience it.

Fabulous Mountain Home

  • 5 of 5

Once you got past the mile long gravel drive way, that was a bit precarious, this property was well worth it! The energy as soon as you pulled up was fantastic. Indescribable feeling of warmth and belonging here. The layout lends itself to a party type atmosphere, but you could find solitude also. The kitchen was easy to cook in, ample space for dining, Ping pong, cards, meditation room, labyrinth, great vistas. A great find!
