About Mike and Betty Arnott

We are retired teachers: Betty taught middle school math and science and Mike, a professor of economics at WCU. We retired to Betty's family farm in Candler after careers in Atlanta. Our schools include Appalachian State University, UT and UGA. We have two married daughters and five grandkids in Nashville and Tuscaloosa.

Mike and Betty Arnott purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Mike and Betty Arnott chose Candler

The farm has been in the family for generations. We built our retirement home on the farm in 2002 and remodeled the home where Betty grew-up to become the Carolina guest cottage. We are ten minutes from the cottage. Our property is blessed with views that are often not found in coves and meadows.

What makes this cottage unique

Our farm and cottage are located in a pastoral cove in the Blue Ridge mountains with Asheville attractions 15 minutes away. The setting provides views of Mount Pisgah and meadows from the porch and yard. Much of the cove continues to have farms that have been passed down to family over the years. Cattle and horses peacefully graze in the pastureland.

Exactly What We Wanted

  • 5 of 5

This place was beautiful and secluded. They had everything we needed to cook our food for the weekend and they provided the coffee. The beds were extremely comfortable and it felt very homey. If you're trying to go downtown you should expect to pay about $20 for an uber but it was really worth it for the views and coziness this place offered. Mike and Betty were great hosts and even gave us a box of pastries on our arrival. I would definitely stay here again.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

The accommodations were great for 3 couples. The living room allowed us to sit before the fireplace and share stories about our friendships over 40+ years. While miles separated us, the closeness of our relatioship remained strong. This cozy country home, animals & vistas- created the ultimate home away from home.

Betty & Mike Arnott were very attentive to our needs, without being intrusive.

Would strongly recommend as a place to stay.

Great house, great location

  • 5 of 5

We really loved our stay between Christmas and New Years. The cottage is comfortable in every way. We particularly want to call out the well-appointed kitchen. We were able to cook a full Christmas meal (turkey and trimmings), just needing to buy a disposable roasting pan for the bird. And the hosts genuinely care about you - they called us one evening when there was black ice on the roads just to be sure we knew about it. Although located in the country on a working farm (ponies, sheep, goats can be seen out the window), it's close enough to Asheville to go in for a meal or a visit.

Great location

Had a great time at this Asheville rental. The house had everything we needed. The location was great, close to Asheville and mountains trails. The farm setting was very relaxing. We also really enjoyed the apple fritters provided on our first day by Betty.
