About Gary Whidden
I own a retirement mobile home park and my wife is a Biology teacher in Frostproof, Florida.
Gary Whidden purchased this Cabin in 2015
Why Gary Whidden chose Central
The river property came into my mother’s family in the 1890’s. My great grandfather built the family homestead. In 1901 (pre-dam) a flood came and damaged the home. With mules and logs they moved the 3,000 square foot, 2 story home across the creek and placed it on higher ground. Before the dam was built in the mid 1940’s, the river would sometimes look like a creek, at other times it would rise and come out its 50 foot banks. In the winter, the river would freeze and my great grandparents would cut squares of ice from the river and bury it in their home for later use. Before the bridge, there was a natural shelf that allowed the horse and buggies to cross the river in front of the cabins. The ground was farmed until I received it in 2003. My mother was raised on the property, until she married my father in 1947 and moved to Florida. We vacationed here every year, so I have always loved this place. I wanted a place of my own but hated the idea of having it sit empty most of the time. I am in the rental business in Florida so I decided to build something that could be rented when we are not able to be here. At that time, there were no buildings on the property, so I was able to start from scratch. I really like the character of horse barns and thought, why not build one that could house people. So, in 2004, we built the cabins and it has been a great adventure! This past winter, we just completed our retirement cabin. The cabin has three bedrooms, three baths, and a basement apartment. We hope you choose us for your lodging in East Tennessee. We know you will enjoy it. -Gary and Patty Whidden

Unfortunately the place was not that clean, including the shower having lots of old mold along the shower door. The table is covered by a table cloth because the table is rough and probably can't be cleaned the table cloth was also dirty. The place has a new cat who is very nice, maybe too nice would sit but the door so you had to be carful not to let her in the house accidentally. The location is the best thing about this place but if the property continues to deteriorate then probably not worth staying here.
Pine Cabin, a rustic retreat for two !
This was our second visit to Watauga River Cabins. As with our previous visit (Hemlock) we found the cabins to be comfortable, very clean and well appointed. We greatly appreciate the fact that the property is pet friendly. The cabins are located right on the river and are very peaceful. In general we were very pleased with our stay.
However, this unit is actually located underneath the larger Cedar Cabin. The guests that rented Cedar cabin had a party or get together that included a large number of people that enjoyed themselves past 11:00 pm the first 2 nights of our stay. The noise made it very difficult to sleep and made our dog bark. Most Rentals have stated quiet times. Perhaps in the future the guests that rent the Cedar Cabin should be reminded to be respectful of other guests in the unit below and have a posted quiet time.
The remaining two nights of our stay were quiet and restful. (There were new guests in Cedar Cabin that even had a dog and we did not hear any nightly noise)
We hope to go back next year but will think twice before renting the Pine Cabin.
Ray, I'm so sorry your stay in Pine was not enjoyable. Please know that we take your reviews very seriously. In an effort to improve, we have decided not to rent Pine by itself if Cedar is rented. Those who wish to rent Cedar can have the option of renting the whole house. Otherwise, Pine will be vacant.
We thank you for brining this to our attention.

Good place to get away
We came here for my wife's birthday weekend in January. Overall, it is a nice place. It has the feel of a cabin inside, which is what we were hoping for. It's about 10 minutes from downtown Johnson City, so it was easy access to get to the restaurants, shops, or, a short drive farther, some hiking we wanted to do. Gary helped us out and answered all our questions leading up to the trip and was very quick to respond, which I appreciate. We were also allowed to bring our dog and he loved the large property and the river right below the cabin.
The first reason I took off stars were because there was no dry firewood. I mean, in the grand scheme of things, it's not that big of a deal, but it would be nice to have dry firewood available. We were told there would be firewood available, which there was, (there was a big stack nearby but it was out in the open but it rained the previous week, ) but it was not going to work. A quick drive into town to Kroger and a $5 load fixed our problem for the next night. It's not a huge deal just a slight frustration we couldn't have a fire the first night we were there when that was one of the top 3 things I was looking for in a rental for the weekend.
The main reason, however, we took off two stars, was that this property is under another property they own and we could hear everything upstairs. My wife is a light sleeper and so she had a lot of problems falling asleep the first night. The people upstairs weren't being loud and obnoxious or having some crazy party, but we could literally hear every footstep, whether it was at 1pm or 1am. The next night we bought earplugs and slept with four noisemakers and it was much better. I think it would have bothered us more if we had stayed in during the day, but since we were out most of the entire Saturday, it didn't bother us during the day.
I would probably stay here again as long as I knew ahead of time to bring my firewood and better earplugs.
We will definitely be back! The location was perfect, and the land was beautiful. Our three kids and our boxer enjoyed exploring along the river. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed.
Clean and quiet, missing some amenities.
Overall it was ok. Clean and spacious, the layout was very nice. I was disappointed in the lack of adjustable air conditioning, as it was well over 90 degrees during our stay, and the broken wifi made it impossible to get work done. Also, charging nearly a half day rental fee for cleaning when we cleaned up after ourselves was unnecessary. Perhaps charging that after the fact in case of a messy room would be more appropriate? If they have the wifi running and don't charge a random, expensive cleaning fee next time, I would stay again as the owners seemed very nice and the property was well kept.
AMAZING place to stay on the Watauga, especially with a dog!
This place is FANTASTIC! We stayed in the Pine Cabin below the main house, and we found it to be very comfortable and luxurious. The appliances are all brand new and high-end, including a washer and dryer in the cabin for any laundry needs, and the furniture and decor is really beautiful. The outdoor space is truly incredible, too, with a bbq, outdoor eating area, fire pit, and a fabulous hammock right next to the river! On top of the great accommodations, the Whiddens were so nice and helpful! We even got to let our dog play with the Whiddens' dogs, as well as a few other guest dogs, and it was definitely the best day of our puppy's life! I have honestly never felt so welcomed and at-home when renting a cabin. I didn't want to leave, and I certainly can't wait to go back! I would HIGHLY recommend booking any of the Watauga River Cabins if you have the chance!!
Thanks for the review, i look forward to seeing you and your family again soon at the cabins. That day with the dogs will remain a very fond memory.
