About the property

Perfect Setting in Charming Marshall & between Asheville and Scenic Hot Springs

The Gatehouse is a cozy cottage escape, located above historic Marshall, the artsy riverside village in the wooded mountains of Asheville's beautiful backyard to the north.

The Gatehouse provides everything you need as a jump-off point for many outdoor and cultural adventures, or simple quiet & relaxation. It is set on 5+ acres of a secluded knoll in the forest, with views of the horizon peaking through the trees in every direction, and the distant sounds of the French Broad River rushing far below.

Marshall is the center of beautiful Madison County, Asheville’s secret oasis to the north. Its abundant resources include organic farms, great fishing, national forests, healing mineral springs, nearby skiing and easy access to Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway - we’re just a stone’s throw from several recreational and whitewater rafting companies. The Gatehouse is a short and easy drive to Asheville's thriving scene, and just minutes away from fine local dining, galleries and live music in downtown Marshall.

The Gatehouse is completely furnished, comfortable and cozy with a huge deck connected to a large fenced yard, perfect for your dogs who are welcome to stay as well.

About Bri Nelson

I've traveled the world and absolutely fell in love with Western North Carolina. Now as a home owner in the area, I want to share this special area with other travelers looking for a true getaway.

Bri Nelson purchased this cottage in 2015

Why Bri Nelson chose Marshall

The Gatehouse is definitely unique. It's quiet and tranquil setting make it ideal as a writer's retreat or peaceful escape, and yet, it boasts a close-to-everything character that will appeal to the adventurer as well.

What makes this cottage unique

Marshall is a mostly undiscovered gem in the area. It's near Asheville but has a special small-town riverside charm of its own. Surrounding Madison County is rich with outdoor beauty and adventure, culture and history. On my first visit to Marshall I said, "I'm going to live there someday."

Cozy house surrounded by peaceful woods

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely little house in the woods with a large deck. The house was clean with plenty of linens and comfortable beds. The drive up in steep but we could manage without four wheel drive. The location is great - close to Hot Springs and Asheville - but remote enough to feel like you are really getting away. My kids loved exploring nearby and saw deer several times. A great trip!

We really enjoyed our stay!!! And our dog loved the backyard! The only thing we realized we wish we had had was a tv and DVD player to watch movies at night.

Perfect getaway for a family that loves outdoors

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our family of 4 and our dog. Our son loved running around the fenced in back yard with our dog! The scenery is beautiful with the trees and mountains in the distance. You're in driving distance of a lot of nice parks and things to do as well. We look forward to coming back sometime to do more exploring!

Cozy with good winter views!

  • 5 of 5

Small house with huge deck. The bedrooms are a good size with comfortable beds. The front bedroom has two double huge windows to see the dog lot on the side of the mountain and distant Mountain View’s. One bath with tub/ shower. Nice laundry room! Kitchen is well suited for cooking full meals with a good supply of cook wear and eating utensils. I loved the large gas stove!!! Living room and dining comb with patio doors and double sliding windows with distant Mountain View’s. Love seat sleeper couch (not very comfortable) and a small table for 4 not very sturdy. Well stocked with laundry, dish and dishwasher liquid. Paper products too! Even though I brought my own. Almost at the end of the dead end road. Two other homes are tucked away there. Another home down the hill red roof visible. VERY QUIET AREA. Saw deer first morning but our dogs kept them at a distance the remainder of our 9 days. Gas central heat kept us warm with the house being air tight as we had up to 40 mph wind gust and 20 degree weather for the lows and 30 to 40 for the highs. The large dog lot was perfect for our dogs. My husband put a tarp over the door facing the road to keep our little dog from escaping but the rest was very secure. Of course you have to watch little dogs as there are predators in the sky that can scoop them up! We visited Cades Cove and Roaring Fork Gap in Tennessee and Cataloochee NC all in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Check them out on the web! A lot of history in those hills!!! The Elk are abundant in Cataloochee! Going to Tennessee side is an all day trip. The road to this place is better than most we’ve been on to other rentals. 4WD in ice and snow though! The Ingles supermarket and other stores were 10 minutes from the house. Very good location to do a lot more in the warmer weather. We enjoyed not having a tv! Internet and our iPads were sufficient! Our cell phones are Verizon and worked great! Patio table and chairs for 4 were on the deck with two plastic chairs. Extra sheets, blankets, towels, etc. Communication with owner through VRBO email was good. Key lock box onsite gets you in. Thanks Bri for a restful vacation at your Gateway House! Perfect Mountain Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the Gateway for about a month in total, and it exceeded all of our expectations. The space was nicely decorated with comfortable furniture and beds with all linens and towels provided. The kitchen was well stocked with everything you need to cook, and a great gas stove. My favorite part of the place was the wrap around deck in the middle of the woods, it was such a peaceful place to come back to at the end of the day. We brought our three dogs and really appreciated the enclosed deck and the fenced in space in the back of the house. The house is in close proximity to everything in the area. It is just a few miles away from the Laurel River Trail, an easy trail for our dogs to explore along the river. Asheville is about a 30 minute drive, 45 minutes to the Biltmore Estate, and 45 minutes to the blue ridge parkway. The gateway is a great choice for anyone coming to the area!
