Why owner/property manager chose Dare County
We purchased this beautiful cottage in 1998. We love it for its fantastic location, cottage charm, and convenient one floor living. Sanderling, a subdivision of Duck, is a bird sanctuary. You can take a short walk to The Sanderling Inn for a great meal, including an oceanfront bar and restaurant. There is a community pool located on beautiful Currituck Sound as well as a Fitness Center. The Currituck Club golf course is just a short drive, as are the supermarkets and wonderful restaurants.

Great for a long weekend
My family and I have been visiting Duck annually for the past 8 summers, but all of our stays have been on the same little street as this cottage just south of Sanderling.
Some would rather be more in town. But an easy 5k run south will get you to Duck donuts right in the heart of Duck. Personally I love being away from the fray!
It's somewhat difficult to review this particular house given we have stayed in this same location so many times, but on the other side of the road in much larger Oceanfront/view homes. But that also gives a good idea of the comparisons.
The biggest perk of renting this home is the flexibility with check-in. If you go through one of the OBX property managers, you will have to stay an entire week (or at least pay an entire week!). Our school system altered the start date this year, so we were unable to come during the end of summer when we normally visit. I decided on a long weekend in Sept to take advantage of a Friday school holiday. This was possible only because I found a VRBO home where I could stay 3 nights instead of paying an entire week.
Bob is extremely accommodating & communicative. Everything was ready to go with an easy check-in door code upon our arrival. Frequently with the property managers, your house isn't ready until 3/4 pm the day you arrive. He made planning the arrival so easy because it was ready whenever we happened to get there.
- Ease of check-in, flexibility of check-in, & flexibility of scheduling shorter than one week
- Location-quiet & not crowded
- SO much "house stuff". Toilet paper, trash bags, paper towels, dishwasher & laundry soap... (typically not included in OBX homes. This house was jam packed with everything you'd possibly need)
- Road noise - this was really my only downside. The bedrooms back to Duck Road, and it's very loud (even middle of the night). This is not something I had ever experienced being on the ocean side.
Things to be aware of:
The kitchen is fairly small and in the center of the house. It worked out fine for us, but if you have lots of "cooks in the kitchen" it would be crowded.
There is a washer/dryer, but you have to go outside/downstairs to access. Initially I thought this would be a negative, but didn't impact me.
Having always had direct access/private walkways to the beach, I thought this would be my biggest con, but it is not at all a problem. Such an easy walk to the beach.
A lovely time and we would stay again!
Thank you so much for your kind words and review of our home.
We keep the home stocked with essentials to make it easier for our guests. Running to the store again and again is not at all convenient. I'm glad that you found that feature helpful for you.
We would welcome you and your family again.
Loved the beach and the area the cottage was in but please know that it does back up to a main road and you can hear the traffic during the night and especially in the morning--it is very LOUD due to the walls being so thin. Also, the home is in much need of renovation--the temperature dial on stove is broken so you have to guess the temp--the dishwasher is very old--I had to change the filters to house when we arrived because stuff was blowing out--they had not been changed since March (the date was written on filters) Also, I had to sweep the bathrooms and kitchen because of sand and wipe things down a bit--cobwebs were everywhere (in light fixtures, etc.) even though we paid a $150 cleaning fee. Also, the tv's in bedrooms were not working so the cable people had to come (the day before we left) to fix the problem so no tv for us in bedrooms pretty much our whole stay--the grass outside had not been cut and was long--the deck needs major repairing and staining. Overall, sorry to say we would not stay here again. The property owners seems nice but really needs to update this cottage!!
This was our first trip to the Outer Banks and we chose a great location to start! The house is in a lovely neighborhood just a few minutes walk to the beach! There was plenty of restaurants and shopping either north or south of it. The house is well-equipped with chairs, umbrellas and beach items. The outdoor showers (2 of them!) were great for rinsing off before going upstairs. The living areas are nicely furnished and roomy. All of the kitchen essentials are there -- and plenty of everything! We would rent this house again!
Thank you for all your kind words about your stay in our home. I'm so glad that you and your family enjoyed yourselves.
We would love to welcome you back in the future for another visit.
Great for a long weekend!
Will definitely keep this place in mind for next summer! The only thing is that the place can use a little more cleaning prior to arrival.
Comfortable beach home a short 3 minute walk to the beach! Close by to grocery stores and shops. The house was exactly as pictured and the layout of the bedrooms made it feel more spacious than expected. Fully stocked with everything you need for the home and the beach. The location was farther out from the busier sections of Duck, providing a relaxing and quiet experience. Some kitchen appliances may need upgrades in the near future, but everything was functional and the host, Bob, was very responsive and helpful. I would definitely recommend this home to families visiting the area!
Thank you so much for all the kind words. I'm so glad that you and your family enjoyed your stay.
All the best,
Perfect place to stay in Sanderling
We were in Outer Banks for our son's wedding and this place could not have worked out better. We were close to the venue and were able to enjoy the (very) nearby beach and the pool. The home was clean and quiet with comfortable beds and was big enough for 7 adults! We enjoyed being in a quiet area, yet close enough to Duck and the restaurants there. Everything we needed for the beach was provided, as well as a kitchen stocked full of all sorts of cookware.
If we were in Outer Banks again, we would definitely want to stay here!
Judy and David,
Thank you so much for your kind words. I hope that your son's wedding was just perfect. Would love to have you stay at our home again. All the best. Bob Picciano
