Livable, but disappointing

  • 2 of 5

We were so disappointed upon checking in. The photos and description made it look and sound so nice – “updated Victorian.” This rental is run down and in need of updating and nicer furnishings. The kitchen is somewhat updated, but the bathroom is in dire need. The sink is cracked and almost useless because they have installed a faucet that is the wrong size and hangs way down into the sink bowl. The craft project tile on the small counter top is starting to fall apart but still usable. The shower faucets leak terribly but there is plenty of hot water.

And while the photos show a small amount of furniture, there were several items missing – the living room chair and two dinning room chairs. We eventually got 2 more dining room chairs, but that’s it. We had to bring in a couple of lamps and mirrors just to make the space usable. On the upside, the IKEA couch is fairly comfortable. The bed is very firm and we had to purchase a topper to make it a little softer. There are some basic kitchen dishes and pans, but nothing beyond that. If you plan on actually cooking, you will have to bring everything with you. The kitchen faucet is broken (the handle falls off every time you use it, but is still operational).

That kind of describes this rental. Everything is pretty run down, but you can make it work. About half of the window blinds don’t function and most are really dirty.

Also, be mindful of the parking situation. There is only on-street parking. One side of the street is permit only; on the other side (which is in front of the house) it is fairly difficult to find, especially if you have two cars.

But the piece de resistance is that the thermostat that controls the heat and air conditioning for the unit is located in the unit below that is occupied by other tenants. We were not informed of this even by the person who met us to give us the keys. We began looking around for the thermostat on the first night when it was pretty chilly and couldn’t find it. We called the contact person who then informed us we don’t have any control over our heat and cooling and she gave us the phone numbers for the tenants below. It’s a royal pain to have to contact them (even though they are super sweet) and would have been a deal-breaker had we been told up front. Throwing salt on the wound, the furnace has gone out twice and we’ve only been here a few weeks. This the kind of place you endure not enjoy. Definitely not a “vacation” rental.

Owner's Response: This is a historic home, not a modern style home. It's in great condition, stocked with all extended stay necessities as described, and we always offer to come fix anything that is in need of repair immediately. This guest complained, but then would not allow us access to repair anything they complained about. We also installed a Nest thermostat to allow control of the air conditioning and heating from anywhere. We have had nothing but happy customers prior to this guest, so it seems expectations were out of line.
