Overview

About the property

Superb views and open fire - ideal for all seasons

Nestled alongside the beautiful River Fowey, with Heligan Gardens, the Eden Project and the picturesque harbours of Fowey and Mevagissey all within easy driving distance, Kiln Cottage lies only a stone’s throw from the water’s edge in the sleepy village of Golant. It commands wonderful river views from almost every room. Approached across the terrace, now covering the old lime kiln, the spacious cottage has been tastefully renovated with a blend of antique and modern furnishings. The maple-built kitchen (with traditional low beams in places) has stairs to the comfortable sitting/dining-room where a magnificent picture window is perfect for watching the comings and goings on the river. On the top floor the master bedroom and bathroom have spectacular views over the moorings on the river.

Driving Instructions: Driving along the A380 towards St Austell, take the B3269 left, which is signposted to Fowey (it also has a signpost to the Hidden Valley Gardens).

Continue along the B3269, after about 3 miles you'll come to some pale-green/white farm buildings followed shortly by a staggered crossroad, take the left turning signposted to Golant.

Keep following this road towards the river, at the waterfront it turns to the right, continue past the no through-fare sign, Kiln Cottage drive is less than a hundred yards on the right.

Lovely house in a fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely, quiet, picturesque location. It was just what we needed to relax and Judith made sure we could do that, especially with the extra touches that she provided! It made such a difference to arrive to afternoon cream tea and the fridge and cupboards stocked with the necessities we needed without having to rush out to find a shop. The house was very clean and looked after and we had everything we needed to be able to relax and enjoy the fabulous view! Can definitely recommend this for a quiet, relaxing holiday.

Beautiful View, Stunning House

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at Kiln Cottage after a 24 hour trip. As we turn the corner into the tiny town, the picturesque estuary, with boats bobbing, filled our view. Judith came from London to make sure we had everything needed. The kitchen table was fully set with enough traditional food, all beautifully presented, for our late supper and breakfast. The cottage is on three levels, and decorated in beautiful soft colors in a consistent, but varied, way. The kitchen has very modern appliances, all are perfectly clean as is the whole house. Most is made of the water view from the the living room and two of the bedrooms, and we spent every morning sitting in two cozy chairs looking out with our coffee.

All the bedding was highest quality and seemed new, and sleep was easy in such a quiet location. We spent days touring, from Fowey to Penzance with stops at historic sights and gardens along the way. The local pub is barely a stroll down the road, the rowing club provides the show, and you are going to love every minute in this charming home,

Holidaying beside and on the river Fowey - what more could you want

  • 3 of 5

At long last I have a moment to sit down and wrote something!

We stayed recently at this property during the October half term.

We were welcomed with a very traditional tea and scones (which lasted for several days!), and was just the thing after the drive down to Cornwall.

The house sits in a very quite position with great views across the river Fowey and just two minutes walk from the local pub.

There is a railway line between you and the river which is only used by a freight train twice a day and which the kids loved to watch. The house was tidy and suitably spacious enough for three adults (couple and great granny!), and two children to stay.

The drive up to the house is steep and narrow and most people wouldn't want to use it too much. Space to turn around is also very tight and reversing up or down isn't easy. Since we had two cars one had to be left along the street below (which didn't cause any problems but it was out of season).

The house has full central heating which was important since we had an elderly person with us. Sadly we only discovered the day before our last that the radiator wasn't working in great granny’s room (she didn't want to bother us!).

The property has great access to the river Fowey if you are into boats and water sports generally. You can literally launch from opposite the property or just down the lane at a slipway at low tide. This and the fact that the property particulars state (and arguably imply), that it has Kayak / Canoe under the heading ‘Outside’ along with Deck Chairs, Binoculars and Barbecue etc (all of which it does have), was another of the reasons we chose the house. We therefore left our kayak at home only to find it does not come with one. The owner didn't seem at all bothered or concerned when we mentioned this. In the end we hired a canoe from a hire business immediately next door and were later offered a canoe from a local to make use of (not the owner!).

The wonderful town of Fowey is less than a ten minute drive away (or longer, pleasant canoe trip), with its busy, narrow streets and river mouth. Be aware just how busy and contested it can get even out of season! There is a lot to do and explore in the area and especially on water. The only surprise is that there isn't any easy walk along the waters edge from the village in either direction.

All in all we did enjoy our stay in spite of there being no heating in grannies room and there being no canoe!

Scenic hideaway!

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely house in a perfect spot if you are looking for peace an quiet with good access to all of Southern Cornwall. Its a comfortable, spacious home with a charming garden, close to the village pub and with superb views Caution is in order if you are tall, low ceilings can lead to bumped heads, also, no shower in master bedroom on third floor, only a tub. Otherwise, a perfect getaway spot,, we highly recommend it!

Beautiful cottage, fabulous setting!

  • 5 of 5

Kiln Cottage is one of the nicest places that we have ever stayed. From the extremely warm welcome (including home made scones, lemonade and jam!) to our very sad goodbye. We had the best time ever!

The location is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the coast line. Whether you do that from the sofa - watching the boats go out or from a Kayak on the river your choices are endless.

We kayaked, hired a small boat, went crabbing, explored the village and visited some of the more popular tourist towns. It was always so lovely to return to the gorgeous cottage and feel totally relaxed and at home.

We will definitely be back!

Thank you Judith for everything.

It'a a lovely house in an amazing place.

  • 5 of 5

It's a beautiful house with amazing views from de sofá to the river. It has everything you need and anything you need Judith is ready to provide it. When we arrived we found a lot of details that Judith has prepared for us (delicious scones, chocolates, cake, wine ...)

There are two bathrooms, but only one of them has a shower, so we have to share it in the morning. It took a long time to be ready because we were five people and sometimes we haven't enough hot water.

For two miles the road to get there it's very narrow so two cars don't pass at the same time. You have to drive carefully.

But anyway it's a nice place to stay. And the quietness is guaranteed.

Owner's Response: Mary, Many thanks for your thoughtful and kind comments, I am sorry that you had some issues with the hot water, there is a separate system for the hot water in both bathrooms ensuring that there is always plenty of hot water - this is controlled by a switch in the lower bathroom which may not have been on. My fault I should have double checked, thanks for the feedback on this and I will make sure that it is always on in the future. Hope to see you again - it was smashing to meet you all. With best wishes, Judith

Restaurants, pubs and stunning scenery are within walking distance, while sandy beaches, historical sites such as Restormel Castle and Lanhydrock House and the famous Eden Project are a short drive away.

In Summertime there’s a range of activities and even in high summer the village of Golant remains one of Cornwall’s best-kept secrets as a peaceful waterside retreat. Autumn & Winter holidays are popular too, with the nearby oyster festival and Christmas & New Year celebrations. Golant is an ancient fishing village on the Fowey River Estuary, just two miles from Fowey. The area is steeped in fascinating history, with the last battle between Cromwell's army and the Royalists having taken place nearby in 1644 and many of Daphne du Maurier's novels set in the vicinity.

This stretch of the Fowey River is equally famous as the inspiration for Kenneth Graham's, The Wind In The Willows.
