Newly restored 18th Century 2 Bedroom Cottage in Peacefull Coastal Hamlet hamle
About Dorothy Murphy
Burnside Cottage is the holiday home of Andrew and Dorothy Murphy and their son and daughter Fergus and Kate. Andrew is a retired company director and Dorothy has a senior role in golf hospitality in St Andrews. We live about 40 minutes from Burnside Cottage in Freuchie so close enough to just pop down at the weekend or to walk the dogs along the Fife Coastal Path which passes along the beach about half a mile from the cottage. Dorothy is an accomplished cook and loves to rustle up impromptu dinners from the array of fresh produce that Fife is famed for. (This is a service that can be booked in advance by visitors)

Why Dorothy Murphy chose Anstruther
We fell in love with Burnside Cottage at first sight. It is so pretty and Kilrenny is a lovely little hamlet which would not look out of place in "Midsommer Murders" Built around 1750 it had originally been a fishermans cottage but had been a holiday retreat for a familly from Glasgow since the 1930s. Like all properties of this vintage once you sratch beneath the surface you find a lot that requires attention. What was initailly planned to be merely the installation of a new shower room turned into a complete internal renovation. Installling a new kitchen and bathrom, log burner, complete rewiring, intelligent central heating , new insulated floors and hand made internal doors. We think you will be pleased with the results: we certainly are! At the back of the house is a lovely enclosed garden overlooking pastures surrounding Invergellie House and a lovely burbling burn A path from the back garden leads out to Kilrenny Common where there is a childrens playground and a lovely nature trail.
What makes this Cottage unique
Kilrenny is ideally situated for exploring Fife's Golden Fringe as its string of fine sandy beaches is known dotted between the picturesque fishing villages of Anstruther, Pitenweem, Crail and St Monans not forgetting the resort of Elie where the Edinburgh Hoi Poloi come to play. And of course there is the home of golf , St Andrews within a 10 minute drive with its numerous golf courses.

Fabulous little cottage
Wonderful location, kind hosts and super clean home which is perfect for me. Beds and bedding high quality just very thick duvets for Summer. Local Cockerel in the mornings vocal but lovely view from upper bedroom.
very nice cottage in a lovely tranquil village and handy for visiting the quaint fishing villages of fife
Thanks Catriona and so pleased you enjoyed your stay in Kilrenny.
Dorothy and Andrew
The Cottage is set in a beautiful quaint village. It’s garden has lovely views over the fields, as does the upstairs bedroom. The cottage is pretty, but lacks wardrobes/hanging space. The dining table and stools are very uncomfortable. The hot water was intermittent. The stairs were narrow and a challenge. It is a short drive to Crail and Anstruther. Also very easy access to other parts of the Fife coast. The bus stop is a few minutes walk from cottage, which takes you to Anstruther, Crail, St. Andrews and other destinations.
A fantastic cottage on the beautiful Fife coast
Having never been to the Fife coast we now can’t wait to return.
The cottage is well situated to easily walk to Anstruther and beyond (Crail, Pittenweem, St. Monans all walkable). The area is full of great countryside, good food and postcard picture places to visit. We also fitted in visits to Dundee (Science Museum, V&A) and Edinburgh (Royal Brittania and National Museum).
The cottage itself had everything we needed for a family for 4 and was spotlessly clean. The weather was both cold enough to justify using the wood burner and warm enough to get out in the lovely garden.
Both Dorothy and Andrew were kind enough to answer any questions we had and even left Easter Eggs for the kids - a generous touch which made for 2 very happy children on arrival (as well a home-baked cake which made for very happy parents).
We couldn’t have wished for a better break.
Quaint & cosy cottage in a quiet village close to the sea
This is a lovely, tastefully decorated cottage set in a quiet little village. Plenty of great walks close by and ideal for dogs. The homemade scones & jam were much appreciated and very tasty. We made good use of the log burner which just added to the already homely feel of the cottage. A big 'thank you' to Alistair (neighbour) for his help and to Andrew & Dorothy for allowing us the use of their beautiful cottage.
Thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and intend to return - highly recommended.
Thank you so much Maryanne. I will let Alastair know he has featured in a great review! Really so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Dorothy
A lovely, cosy cottage in a beautiful area. Plenty places to walk the dog and to explore the coast.
We loved our stay at Burnside Cottage, thank you so much for the perfect chance to relax and set our own pace. The cottage was beautifully decorated, and the handmade scones left out for us on our arrival were a perfect touch. Our dog loved exploring the local woodland and coastal paths, and coming in with us to visit all the dog friendly bars and cafes nearby. The surrounding area was full of nice places to visit, like the Coastal Path at Crail and the Harbour Gallery and cafe there with a sea view courtyard. Walking along the harbour at Kilrenny through to Anstruther with a stop for fish and chips and a wee G&T made for a memorable day out, made even better with a homely cottage to get back to for a hot chocolate and a bubble bath! Excited to return, recommend this break to anyone looking for a bit of peace and the chance to make some memories or to simply relax and reload.
You’re 10 miles from St Andrews (the home of golf)
There’s a great 9 hole course at Elie Sports Club . Anyone can play there and there’s no dress code - or you can put your name down for the ballot for The Old Course in St Andrews - your golf can be as informal or as formal as you wish …
However, there are 30 within a 15 mile radius, below are a few …
