'Awesome Cottage! Great Owner!

Call 203-444-4477----http://spacesoftheheart.com/

Absolutely loved this house and will definitely plan on staying here again! My husband is originally from Connecticut and his entire family still lives there. Traditionally we stay with family when we visit but I decided to rent a house this trip so we could entertain and have everyone over. This house was charming and very comfortable. It was my mother in laws 80th birthday and I had about 25 family members over for a dinner party. Every person who entered the house commented on what a terrific cottage it was. Having the upstairs loft was a perfect space for my son to have his privacy and a place to relax. He (and I) loved having the wireless internet connection that worked great! The outdoor area was very private and the deck was a wonderful space to hang out and kick back. Everyone really enjoyed the art work throughout the house and commented that it provided warmth and character to the cottage. Lastly I want to share my comments on the owner Yvette, she was very prompt in her responses to me and a real pleasure to work with through the rental process. Yvette thank you so much for sharing your beautiful home with us, it was the most memorable visit to Connecticut that our family has ever had. Take care, my best, Julianna (This was the first time I ever rented a home online or used the Home Away site, it was a great experience!)'

Response

I have been renting my cottage since 2006. I own the lot next door, a tiny wooded lot, so the back yard is very private. The house is on a private dirt home has a large deck, front porch, fireplace, I provide linens, spices, paper towels, trash bags.

This is the home I raised my boys in. It was always filled with love....

Peace at the Beach

  • 5 of 5

An enchanting and comfortable retreat where we felt very warmly welcomed during a special Labor Day weekend on Long Island Sound. This home away from home sits at the end of a friendly private lane and has plenty of space inside and out for the whole family. We enjoyed the sunny porch, which is perfect for reading or afternoon naps, and the upstairs retreat. Very well located for all that Old Saybrook has to offer.

Our stay at Yvette's cottage was a bliss!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a charming, comfortable and quiet place near the water, where we could spend a nice vacation with our 2 children. We ended up deciding for Yvette's cottage after visiting hers together with a few other properties. Most of Yvette's reviews are excellent, but we wanted to visit to make sure. The neighborhood of this cottage is exceptional for those who want to relax, with a lot of privacy. The private beach is a 5 minutes walk, down the Sea Lane. The cottage has a nice yard and a private wood. No car noise, etc.. It's located on a dead end road, no traffic, very safe for kids to play, in a very nice neighborhood. The interior is decorated with a lot of taste and personality, "New England" style. Yvette is an amazing artist and interior designer. The cottage itself was in very good condition. Yvette apparently dedicates a lot of time to the maintenance, and it's being rented all year round. She really made sure that we could find all we need. We had a minor issue with the beach passes, but she was very responsive and it was resolved immediately. We enjoyed sunbathing on the deck in the back, and the grill, while our kids were playing in the yard safely. There are plenty of nice beaches, shops and outlets at short range. We especially enjoyed Hammamasset Park. The kids loved the old train ride along the river, in Essex, and Mystic Seaport. We have been renting vacation rentals since 7 years now, and this was one of our best experiences.

LACKLUSTER

  • 1 of 5

The best part of the cottage is the second floor loft. The grandchildren loved the space. We took a quick tour of the cottage in May. What we found in August was quite different. Appearances are deceiving. The front yard was overgrown. The front door to the porch was nearly impossible to open. The jalousie windows were in-operable, allowing insects, as well as vines to grow inside. One of the living room lounge chairs had only 3 legs. Having the TV set up in the 1st Fl. bedroom was a little strange. The kitchen and bathroom need a real makeover. The freezer didn't freeze food (yes, there was a freezer on the porch), running back and forth for 3 weeks got rather tiresome. Not sure the oven has ever been cleaned. The doors and drawers either wouldn't open/close or stay shut. The unsealed countertops seemed unsanitary. Since the screen door in the kitchen was torn, we couldn't leave the back door open to get the fresh air. Most importantly, the filters for the AC need a good cleaning. I have COPD, clean air is very important. There are many fun aspects to the cottage, which with some TLC can be that way again. As an Interior Designer for 40 yrs. and a member of the American Society of Interior Designers for 35, this review is more of a critique. The theory that "A perfectly kept house is the sign of a life mis-spent", is not necessarily true. Lastly, since we rented for 3 weeks, a friendly call from Yvette would have been appreciated.

Owner's Response: Mary Lou, I am shocked you would leave such a nasty review. Very sad, you would not contact me if you had all these issues. You came to visit the house in May and kept telling my son, friend and myself, how much you loved it. You could not wait to stay. What a great job I did, how you could not wait to stay. You sent me a message while you were staying at the cottage, asking about visiting my other places. spacesoftheheart.com. I would think if the house was such a disaster, you would have contacted us. I knew about the grass in front of the fence and asked someone to go to mow...To hear this was not done,is equally upsetting to me. I take my business very seriously and each of the problems you brought to my attention would have been addressed.. . The house is a wash and wear cottage, the window on the porch have never really worked. No one in the last 11 years has ever had a problem with the window. I am around the corner and would have loved to meet you. But, as life would have it, I had two loved one who were ill. Also, a major health issue. Every second of my days were consumed with finding care and caring for my business. Mary Lou, I certainly could not be in business for over 11 years if the place was such a disaster. The Cottage is one of the top 10 Unique places to stay in Ct... I would like you to remove this review. Yvette Fournier spacesoftheheart@aol.com

Beautiful, Quiet house with everything you need.

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed here for several relaxing days with our children (2 and under 1). The house was very comfortable, in a quiet nook away from traffic. Everything we needed was there for us, and when we ran out of dishwasher detergent, the owner even brought some over within a couple of hours. It is a short walk to a very small, secluded beach that my kids loved (and had all to themselves) and there are great antique stores and restaurants in the vicinity. We will definitely be staying here again and recommending to friends and family.

Disappointed....

  • 3 of 5

We were a bit disappointed with our stay. It is always the little things that count. When I saw the pictures of the cottage I was overwhelmed with what I thought were small touches like the fresh flowers. We arrived and it was quite cold and we were told there was going to be a key under a cushion just in case the lock box didn't open because of the cold... but there wasn't one...we relied on the notion that the lock box would not be cold and would open but if it hadn't we would have had a real problem. There were no welcoming touches like fresh flowers anywhere. The House Rules were posted quite clearly however. No call from the owner at all for the two days we were there asking if everything was okay or if we needed anything. There was no soap for the bath; no tea or coffee...the little things that make one feel welcome. Even after our stay there was no follow up from the owner at all even though I think she manages other properties right there. We could have not even been there and she wouldn't have known. It didn't make us feel welcome at all. The cottage is sweet and was clean but I want to feel at least welcomed and I didn't.

Owner's Response: Gosh, I am very sorry you felt this way. It was New Years Eve and I certainly would not have bothered anyone who may have come in late. I assumed, if you needed anything or had an issue you would have called, since I am five mins away. I usually do not bother Guest but let them know if they have a question or issue for them to ring me. The key was a back up since I had an issue. .I just spoke to the cleaning lady, she let me know she had put in in a better spot. So this could have been taken care of in a min. Flowers, I agree, I wish I could fill the house with flowers, but the flowers are from my garden and its winter. I just do not provide tea and coffee, but will really consider this request. The home is a vacation rental and not a Bed and Breakfast. I am certainly open to Guest request and provide many items most vacation rentals do not. This year the home was picked as one of the top ten unique places to stay in CT...thought I had it down..LOL Happy New Year, Yvette
