Our amazing stone villa is located in the coastal area of Kalathas, a village on the Akrotiri Peninsula in Chania province. It is in a great location with short distance to beach, shops, restaurants and only a 15-min. drive from Chania airport. If you want to visit the old town of Chania, it is also a 20-min. drive away. There are several grocery stores and bakeries nearby, the nearest is 500 meters from the villa by walk.
BEACH LIFE: The sea in Kalathas beach is very shallow and the beach is golden and sandy, making the place ideal for families with children! It is well organized with sunbeds and umbrellas and almost every year is awarded with the European blue-flag, being one of the most beautiful beaches that West Crete has to offer. There are also two canteens in case you want some cold beer or a refreshing cold coffee. The beach is big enough and most likely it will not be crowded, as the area is more characterized by locals. However, there are also two smaller beaches, where you will find the privacy you might looking for. Keep in mind that the beach of Kalathas is affected by the winds, but it is still safe with its shallow waters and the waves cannot gain height.
Also, in a few-minute drive you can reach other beautiful beaches, like Tersanas; a small sandy bay also perfect for families with little children and the water shelves very gently. Stavros beach is the most northerly. This bay lies below the mountain now named after the film, “Zorba The Greek”, and it provides shelter in case of a windy day. There is also a small beach found directly further round from Stavros. To the south of Akrotiri, there are two more sandy beaches, the one is the small beach of Loutraki, while the other slightly larger is Marathi. In both, there are a few bars and some fish taverns to be found on the water front.
The general area of Akrotiri is ideal for those who love hiking or adventure in nature, since it has several caves waiting to be discovered.
The main nearby town is Kounoupidiana with a variety of shops, groceries and supermarkets for your shopping needs. Kounoupidiana has ATM machines, pharmacies, medical services and restaurants with traditional cuisine.
EATING OUT is still reasonably priced here and there are a good range of places to eat all over the Akrotiri from take away pizza to taverns and restaurants. The variety encompasses traditional health Cretan cuisine in simple taverns and fish taverns all the way to the more cosmopolitan diet. Most use fresh locally grown and reared produce.
SIGHTSEEING: it would be remiss if we did not mention the monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity), which is a mere 10 minutes by car from the villa. This was built in the 17th century by two brothers of the Venetian Zangaroli family, who became monks when they had converted to the Orthodox faith.
CHANIA TOWN. Akrotiri is no more to 20-minutes drive from Chania. With its picturesque Venetian harbor and charming historical town, Chania is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Greece. Spending time and walking in the lovely old town of Chania is a must. The Old town is built around the Venetian harbor and the narrow winding lanes fanning away from the harbor are full of shops and places to eat and drink. As you wander through the streets be sure to look out for the signs of Chania’s ancient Minoan past. The Venetian city wall can be seen particularly well along Karaoli Dimitriou Street and the best archaeological digs can be found along Kanevaro Street. If you take care you can come across many other digs around that part of the Old Town.
OTHER MUST-SEE PLACES IN CHANIA PREFECTURE
Also about an hour and a half away to the west are the wonderful beaches of Falasarna and Elafonissi. One must not forget the many ancient sites found both in and around Chania and then the most famous archaeological site of Knossos near Heraklion. For those more adventurous, who enjoy hiking the Samaria gorge is a must-to-do, one of the longest in Europe. Almost in the middle of this part of the island and after 17 km downhill you will find yourself on the shores of the Libyan Sea in Agia Roumeli. There are a number of other possible shorter and less arduous walks both in gorges or along the coast and Akrotiri peninsula itself is ideal for hiking as well.
