Why Mary and the Staff of 2Papaya Vacation Rentals chose Puako
The condos are well maintained with a pool and nearby beach access. Great location to call home base while you explore the Big Island. This unit is beautifully updated, and for the price, unbeatable!
What makes this Condo unique
Beach access is a short walk from the condo, across the street and down a couple houses. This is a great children's beach as the outer reef protects it from the wind and high surf. There are a few shade trees on the south end. Great spot to snorkel and to kayak. Kayaks can be rented nearby.

This place was amazing! The condo was beautiful and clean. Sean met us at the condo after our long flight to welcome us and give us all the information that we needed. The grounds manager Sarah was so nice and was a wealth of knowledge. Fruit trees were abundant on the property and we had fresh grapefruit everyday.
We loved the having all of the beach supplies for us to use. Most days we had the beach all to ourselves, snorkeled and had many encounters with turtles. Beach 69 is right around the corner and is also a gorgeous, shady beach.
We are in love with Puako!
Thank you so much for your review. I am so glad to hear how much you enjoyed the nearby beach and fresh fruit. We hope you can visit again soon!

It was nice. We didn't ask so by no fault of the owners .we realized there was no air conditioning.
It does have everything you need. Clean and stocked. Close to lots of great beaches close and walking distance too. Quiet a few ants and we had a tough time with them in the kitchen. I did ask for a fan since the isn't air and I was given one to use.i would recommend thet have fans for every room. Over all good stay!
Thank you for your review. I'm glad the fan helped. Most homes in the area do not have air conditioning which can be surprising depending on where you are from and what you are use too. Our pest control comes once a month so I am sorry to hear you had some ants. If we know about any problems, our pest guy is happy to come do additional treatments so you don't have to deal with pests. I'm glad to hear you found the home stocked and you enjoyed your stay. We would love to have you back if future travels bring you to the area. We do have AC in a handful of rentals.

Very helpful staff!
We had a great stay at Puako Condo recently. The condo is nicely stocked with everything you’d need for the beach, and is walking distance to some of the best snorkeling we had on the island. The staff managing the unit were also very helpful with helping us plan some Hawaiian activities.
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your time and the nearby snorkeling. Thank you for your kind words. We would love to have you back if travels bring you back to the Big Island.

Well-stocked condo in a quiet area
We (three adults and a toddler) enjoyed our stay tremendously. Puako is a really quiet, residential area. I enjoyed runs to the end of Puako Beach Drive each morning where I saw more pedestrians than cars. The condo, while compact, had everything we could need like extra towels, multiple beach chairs and umbrellas, boogie boards, and snorkel gear. The modern kitchen had all the amenities we needed to cook for ourselves which we did 2/3 meals each day, including a full size dishwasher, fridge, and oven. The beds were VERY comfortable, mattresses seemed brand new.
My only suggestion would be a small step stool for young children to reach the bathroom sinks and for shorter adults to reach the higher kitchen cabinets.
Two weeks in great comfort!
The condo was fabulous! We enjoyed our time there immensely! The Condo itself is beautiful and clean. It has modern appliances and a well apportioned kitchen and beach commodities including many many beach chairs and boogie boards! There are only two things that we wish we were better prepared for in booking this rental, Outdoor play/run space and one of the bedrooms is on the opposite side of the wall from the elevator. THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT! We are a young family and the kids could have used some more time outside that didn't involve crossing a road or being under constant adult supervision we spent so much time at the beach or the pool that it's only worth mentioning because we didn't notice this when we originally searched for a place to stay. That brings us to the elevator. It is literally on the other side of the wall from one of the bedrooms. If you have a light sleeper in your group, keep them out of this room! Our light sleeper was a toddler who would have likely fussed no matter where they slept. Again these are not complaints! Just some information that we would have liked to know before hand and would not have deterred us from renting initially or again if we are ever so lucky to come back. We loved this condo and would gladly stay again and again and again. Bring sunscreen and drink lots of water! The condo is an easy and fun place to relax. Cheers!
Dating back to ancient times, Puako was a fishing village that, until the 1950s, was accessible only by boat or by the Ala Kaha Kai (the ancient “shoreline trail” that is now partially restored as a National Historic Trail). One of Hawaii’s largest petroglyph fields is nearby.
Still a small beach community—fewer than 200 homes along a single road just 2 ½ miles long—Puako is blessed with a consistently sunny and gentle climate. An eclectic mix of residents, snowbirds and vacationers, the kids you see on bikes and the surfers at Paniau probably live here. As you cross paths with them, stop and “talk story” at the General Store, an informal community center as well as a convenient resource for supplies. Life in Puako—year-round and short-term—is relaxed, very relaxed, but never boring.
Rimmed by a protected marine preserve, the Puako reef offers endless sights for snorkeling, SCUBA diving, kayaking, swimming and tide pool wading. Join the “honu” (protected sea turtles—please enjoy them at a safe distance) for a swim or follow their lead and bask in the sun nearby. You’ll have a great vantage point for watching the wintertime display of whales and their young during their calving time in our warm waters.
If all this isn’t exciting enough, you can walk to the Mauna Lani or Fairmont Orchid Hotels for a sunset beverage, or visit the nearby Shops at Mauna Lani or the King’s Shops and Queen’s Marketplace just down the highway for shopping and a variety of restaurants and galleries. On the way upcountry to Waimea, home of Parker Ranch and the “paniolos” (cowboys), a stop at Kawaihae Harbor offers additional restaurants, galleries, and a fish market. Golfers have numerous options, and adventurers may head for the summit of Mauna Kea, the active volcano Kilauea or a trip to the Zipline in Kapa’au.
