Charming home in perfect location
My family of 4 stayed for one week and loved everything about this home. It is on a very quiet street where the homes are full of character and history. It was extremely clean and beautifully maintained. The location is so perfect we were able to walk or bike into Baileys Harbor most days for breakfast or dinner, or just to enjoy the amazing views. We spent a few days on the lake kayaking and paddle boarding (we brought our own), but if the lake was too rough it was a short drive to the Bay side where the water would be perfect. We spent Father's Day grilling and enjoying our dinner in the screened room listening to the waves. We also celebrated our daughter's 16th birthday with a bonfire on the beach and made some wonderful, lasting memories.
Musty and overpriced
My family (5 adults and 4 kids) recently rented this house and were disappointed, especially for the price we paid. The beach is not swimmable and consists of all rocks, including large slippery algae covered ones so even if you wanted to wade in the water with water shoes, you'd slip and fall. Also, the only fire pit is on the rocky slanted water front with limited space to sit around. Prior to arriving, I inquired about beach chairs and was told there are some available. The only chairs were wooden kitchen type chairs to go with the outdoor wood table, and 3 white nylon type loungers that were falling apart. We ended up using a small charcoal grill we purchased at the hardware store for roasting marshmallows. While looking for roasting sticks in the house, a few of the cabinets knobs randomly fell off the doors when I attempted to open them. (We did find some sitting on top of the mantle). Also, the musty damp smell is overwhelming. I expected there to be a somewhat 'cabin' smell, but this was bad, even with all the windows open and fans running. The couches were equally as musty. 2 of us slept on an air mattress instead of even attempting to open the sleeper sofa. The yard was nice and view was great, that's about it.
We are so sorry to hear you were disappointed with your stay. Schook Shack is a charming, older cabin as the pictures and property description show.
Please understand that the beach appearance can change quite a bit year to year and even day to day, from sandy to rocky and back. This is due to the natural changes the lake goes through, and unfortunately, unavoidable. The owner does try to make sure the beach is regularly checked and cleaned if necessary. The fire pit is located on the beach rather than in the yard for fire safety and for ease of dousing the embers at the end of the evening.
In regards to the chairs and the grill, the property has a number of wooden Adirondack-style chairs on the lawn for outdoor seating. We apologize if these were not accessible during your stay. We have not supplied folding beach chairs in the past, and thank you for the suggestion! The owner will look into supplying beach chairs going forward. There is a full-sized charcoal grill at the property so we are surprised to hear you decided to purchase your own.
The sleeper sofa was new as of last summer, so it is surprising that you detected a musty odor in the fabric. The owner has promised to look into this issue. They also were shocked to hear that there was a musty smell in the cabin as they have never encountered that issue in the many years they have owned and spent time there.
We hope other guests will enjoy this property's unique charm and enviable location, and the beautiful yard with its ever-changing Lake Michigan border!
