Our stone farmhouse was built in 1900 on one hectare of land outside the village of Santa Fiora in Tuscany. We bought it in 2016 and have been slowly updating it and adding our own personal touches.
It is an invigorating 15-minute uphill walk to the charming village of Santa Fiora that is not clogged with tourists. It is an hour's drive to the Mediterranean beach resorts near Grosseto, Etruscan tombs, and cities like Pitigliano, Saturnia (hot springs) and the Val d'Orcia and world-renowned wine villages of Montalcino and Montepulciano.
The house has a number of fruit trees, neighboring sheep tend our backyard pasture, and views of the wild hills are all around. It is three hours north of Rome and two hours south of Florence. There is bus service everywhere and a train station 45 minutes away.
In the fall the hills are full of mushrooms and chestnuts, and local restaurants serve a wonderful, rustic cuisine. In winter there is a woodstove in the living room, a fireplace in the kitchen (wood provided), electric heaters if needed, down comforters, and skiing is just a half an hour away.
The people are very friendly and while not many speak English, they love to practice as you learn Italian! You will find yourself in the midst of the real Italy. It is a magical place.
