From the moment you open the beautiful custom gate and enter the lush, private grounds you will know you have found a special place. You'll enter into the great room, which lives up to its name with an open floor plan, high ceilings, wood floors, and tasteful touches around every corner. The home's custom furnishings were hand-picked and imported from the Philippines where some of the finest furniture crafters are located. Expansive windows take full advantage of the dazzling pond and garden views.
A large granite and wood dining room table sits conveniently alongside the L shaped kitchen where you'll find everything you'll need to whip up delicious home cooked meals. Quality appliances include full sized refrigerator / freezer, flat top electric range, microwave and dishwasher. You'll also find a coffee maker and grinder, toaster oven, blender, rice maker and slow cooker, plus a variety of cooking and baking ware. A CD player sits in the corner of the counter to provide tunes while you cook or dine.
On the far end of the great room, a sitting area with two loveseats and matching chair provide the perfect spot to gather and talk story with your companions. The reflection of the sun on the pond paints the ceiling and walls with dappled light. The many windows and ceiling fans keep the house cool and breezy.
The great room opens to a sunny lanai overlooking the gardens and pond. There's a small charcoal grill, which is great for fish. Another dining table provides an outdoor dining option. A sitting area with a small table overlooks the pond - a perfect place to watch the sun rise while sipping a cup of Kona coffee!
Through a set of beautiful custom pocket doors, the enormous master bedroom has a king bed and an oversized jetted tub, perfect for relaxing in after a long day of sight-seeing. A sliding glass door leads out to the lanai. The many floor-to-ceiling windows have white drapes that can be pulled closed for extra privacy. The Ensuite bathroom has a walk in closet and opens to one of the two very private outdoor showers. There's nothing quite like bathing outdoors, surrounded by dense tropical foliage and lava rock walls!
The house is all on one level and designed to give two couples traveling together the utmost privacy. On the opposite end of the great room is the second bedroom with a comfy queen bed. This bedroom has a large desk where you'll find a telephone and the high speed internet modem. If you must work while you're here, this is the perfect spot to do it. There's an Ensuite half-bath, and a door to the other outdoor shower. A large closet provides storage space. Both bedrooms provide ceiling fans and night stands with reading lamps.
In the small den just off the great room, you'll find the TV with DISH satellite service. The sofa doubles as a day bed, providing sleeping space for a child or smaller adult. Check the closet in here for a selection of books, water toys and reef shoes. A third full bathroom can be accessed through the den or great room. This bathroom has a standing shower, and a closet where you'll find the washer and dryer behind sliding doors.
Kapoho is a quiet community on the eastern tip of the island. It's often referred to as "Sunny Kapoho" as it sees only about a third of the rain that falls in Hilo. You'll have a blast exploring along the Red Road - one of the most beautiful drives you'll ever take. Heading south from Kapoho you'll find Ahalanui Park, aka Millionaires Pond, a park with a lagoon at the ocean's edge that is almost Jacuzzi temperature. 5 minutes past there is Isaac Hale Park at Pohoiki Bay the local hot spot for surfing and boogie boarding, and is home to the boat ramp that the lava viewing boats use. Kehena Black Sand Beach is a 15 minute drive. The Kalapana lava viewing area (Pele willing) is 25 minutes away at the end of the Red Road.
Eclectic Pahoa Town is 9 miles from Kapoho, with yummy restaurants, fun shopping , and necessities like convenience and grocery stores, banks, gas, etc. Historic Hilo is 45 minutes from Kapoho, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about an hour.

I would have given my stay a 5 if it hadn’t been for the construction going on during the week. Once it is done, it will be a 5!
The views from the back lanai are extremely tranquil and beautiful! The inside of the house is equally nice. The house could use a few more facial washcloths, but otherwise it had everything we needed.
The location was perfect for accessing the tidal pools.
great house in a great location.
James's group were very good guests and we'd rent to them again anytime!
Mahalo nui for staying with us !

Five star potential, but a reach to make it to three
I so wanted to give this house four or five stars based on location, room layout, and furnishings; but alas I struggle to get to three because of so many problems. The master bathroom had a 7 foot long crack in the ceiling, which leaked rain water. Judging from the water and rust stains on the crack and the walls, it wasn’t a new crack or leak; although when we phoned Aloha Coast Realty (the owner’s property manager), they acted completely surprised. Aloha said they’d send someone to check on it and offered to move us to three “similar” rentals, but all three were of lesser quality and locations. When we decided to “live with it”, we never heard or saw a thing again from Aloha. We placed an empty ice chest under a portion of the leak, closed the door, and listened to the drips all night long for several nights. The other problem the leak created was it made the exterior door to the outside shower too swollen to open. We could not make use of either outside shower. The shower off the second bedroom has an undersized screen and lacks any privacy from the neighbor’s house ten feet away. The house has full height windows along the two sides facing the warm pond and although it makes a nice view, the pond is shared with the neighboring house; the result being zero privacy. We rationalized it as “hard shell glamping” with a very transparent tent. Because of the master bathroom roof leak, we used the third bathroom directly off the front entry door. It has the only indoor shower, which had a large crack in the floor pan. Be careful not to cut your foot on it. It was also reported it to Aloha. The front bathroom also has a large front window with a see-through curtain; so no privacy. I’d avoid this house until these items are fixed and the owner goes with a new property manager. This is Hawaii and that means lots of bugs. We had lots on the kitchen counter. We found three tricks to dealing with this: (1) put all kitchen trash in the freezer (although I did find a live roach in the freezer), (2) when prepping for any meal, prep in stages with all the other ingredients in ziplocks or in the refrigerator, and (3) wipe the counters with soap and water continuously. Regarding the warm ponds in general; you might want to research the health concerns on the state’s health department web site for the issues the tourist industry doesn’t want to acknowledge related to the proximity of residential septic systems. That kept us out of the back yard warm pond.
Mahalo for your review, Karen – although we are so surprised to read it. As we’d discussed during your stay, the repairs to the roof and drywall would be very invasive to guests in residence, which is why we asked you relocate you. You declined the offer, so we had to wait until you checked out to fix the problem. Just so future guests are aware: White Orchid does not share it’s pond with the neighboring house. That house has its own private pond just behind it. Like many desirable, ocean front communities, Kapoho is well developed. The lots are smaller (White Orchid is 1/4 acre, but many are less that than). If folks are looking for isolation this may not be the best neighborhood. But if they are looking for the area’s favorite vacation spot with some of the best snorkeling in the state, Kapoho would be a good fit. Like many tropical locations, insects are a constant battle. We do have all of our rentals on regular, professional pest control treatments, and being tidy in the kitchen and careful with food storage is essential. No need to go overboard, but counters should be wiped down and dishes washed right away ;-) Mahalo again for your review, and we hope you did enjoy your visit!
Wonderful secret place in safe neighbourhood. We had everything we needed in the house. Very clean. We loved the private outdoor showers and beautiful garden. It was little remote located but it did not bother us.
Excellent Hawaii Getaway
We had a wonderful Big Island experience at the White Orchid! Walking up to the house, the first thing we noticed was the scent of flowers blooming- pure Hawaii! The house was very comfortable. The large kitchen was equipped with everything we needed and all the rooms were very spacious. Large windows looked out onto the tide pool and foliage. We slept comfortably on a quality bed. The ceiling fans and open windows provided a comfortable air flow. The internet connection was reliable.
The yard was very unique. It was private and lush, surrounded by mature tropical plants. The backyard tide pool was amazing! The water temperature was perfect. The yard had more grassy area than these pictures show. The house next door is a “sister” property and would be great for a group traveling together to use both properties. The backyards are connected by tide pools, but they are big enough that each house is still private.
Walking down the street takes you to the ocean shore and Wai‘ōpae Tide Pools- wear water shoes.
There was a lot to explore within a short driving distance. Volcano National Park Kilauea Overlook was about 1 hour, 10 min. away with a visitor and walks/hikes. We had dinner at Volcano House and went back to the caldera overlook to see the orange glow of the lava at night.
Hilo was a 45 minute drive north and is the biggest city on the island with all the shopping conveniences. There are some interesting historical sites, funky shops, and the famous Rainbow Falls waterfall.
Heading south on Hwy 130 to its end takes you to the Kilauea lava viewing area. To see where lava pours into the ocean it is an 8 mile walk, or rent a bike for $20. Take binoculars or a camera with zoom lens. Near where Hwy 130 meets Hwy 137 is Uncle Robert’s Awa Bar and cool crafts/flea market with musicians on Wednesday and Saturday. Right next to Uncle’s is the Hawaiian Star Visitor Sanctuary. You can walk out onto the lava field to the ocean.
