About the property

4 BRs / 4 Baths (3 BR's in Main Cabin + 1 BR Gst Hse) + AC + Fire Pit + 2 Canoes

"LAKEWOOD" is a splendid waterfront one acre estate property overlooking the broad span of Highland's cherished Mirror Lake. With over 150' of bouldered lakefront, this premier property is not for the average traveler. Comprised of the main cabin (built in 1929) and offering a charming separate guest cottage, this home is a quintessential "Joe Webb" log cabin. (Joe Webb was a celebrated Western NC log cabin builder in the 1920-1940’s.) Rarely are log cabins - even of this caliber - as well conserved or as painstakingly updated as this one is. The main cabin is elegantly renovated while preserving the architecture and integrity of the fabled Joe Webb design while the guest house is modern, but with true cabin charm.

LAKEFRONT SITING: Sited atop a gentle slope overlooking the water and forested preserve beyond, Lakewood is the very definition of waterside sanctuary and high mountain refinement. More than 30 mullioned windows open out to frame the lake view and capture the gentle summer breezes. The covered upstairs porch and two raised stone terraces offer family and friends iconic lakeside views and gathering spots. Darting fish, waterfowl and breathtaking sunsets make for memorable moments on the terraces. There is also a hammock by the lake.

HOME FEATURES: Inside the main home, there are three levels, two fireplaces and three spacious bedrooms (including a rustic 3 bed loft with original log ladder access.) There are also hardwood floors, collected designer furnishings, cathedral ceilings and updated baths plus a Sub-Zero kitchen with Viking gas cooking. A charming one bedroom (queen) guest house complete with mini-kitchen, sitting area, full bath and lakefront terrace allows for ample guest separation. Out on the property, stroll the gentle one acre grounds and take in the extensive rock paths, perennial, fern and hosta gardens. Or take out one of our canoes to enjoy the scenery.

CLOSE TO TOWN LOCATION: Mirror Lake is one of Highlands oldest and most sought after in-town neighborhoods. Very close to downtown Highlands, you can walk to town, though most guests would probably drive. It’s only a 5 minute drive to everything Highlands has to offer. The neighborhood itself is very walkable and scenic.

HOME SERVICES: (AC/Internet/Cable TV/Blu-Ray/Music/Grand Piano/Fireplaces/Terrace Firepit)

Lakewood is air-conditioned and heated (both main and guest house). It has excellent high speed wireless internet in both the main and guest houses. TV: There are 3 flat screen cable TVs’ in the main home. The living room TV is a Smart TV for Hulu/Netflix, etc. The guest house has cable TV. In the main house, 2 of the 3 bedrooms have cable TV, though the loft bedroom does not. There are 6 large terrace chairs for the lower level main terrace in the main house. There is seating for 6 on the upper porch. There are extra outdoor chairs in the shed. There is a whole house music system. Bring your i-phone/ipod or CD’s. There is a wood burning fireplace in the main level living room. There is a gas fireplace in the lower level master suite. The guest house has a stove style fire heater. There is a firepit on the main house terrace. Firewood is plentiful and provided, as are FP tools and tools for roasting marshmallows and s’mores. There is a baby grand piano. There are two canoes.

BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS: The master is on the lower level with a king bed and an ensuite bath and fireplace. The guest bedroom on the lower level has a queen bed and has its own ensuite bathroom. The loft bedroom has 3 twin beds and a full bath on the main level, just below it, which also serves as a powder room. The guest house has a queen bed and has a full bath and private terrace with seating area and mini-kitchen.

EVENTS: This property has never before been offered for guest rental. It is in pristine condition and we intend for it to remain that way for our guests. Sorry, the home is not generally available for events, though we are open to hearing about yours.

PETS: Please call owner (Tom) discuss pets. A security deposit will be requested for pets in addition to the regular security deposit. We adore dogs (and have two) but we've had unfavorable experiences with pet damage.

About Kevin or Tom or Daniella

Kevin and I are real estate brokers in Atlanta. We travel between Highlands and Atlanta as often as we can.

Kevin or Tom or Daniella purchased this cabin in 2016

Why Kevin or Tom or Daniella chose Mirror Lake

Nothing says Highlands like Mirror Lake. Close to town, but in a private setting on the Cullasaja River, Mirror Lake is quintessential Highlands. This property is nothing less than exquisite. It has been painstakingly maintained and offers luxury and serenity in the most desirable of settings. We waited for 10 years for this property to come on the market and finally secured it.

What makes this cabin unique

Close to Town... and you can take our two canoes directly out onto the lake from our next door neighborhood dock. We have super high speed internet. Also, enjoy the 2 canoes and terrace fire pit.

Beautiful Home - Perfectly Maintained & Stocked

  • 5 of 5

Rarely have we stayed at property that was as beautiful, unique and private as this one. From the moment you open the front door, you're greeted by an elegant old world cabin setting. The owners have obviously collected many exquisite furnishings and accessories and the decorating is thoughtful and fresh, but nothing is "stock". Clearly, they have good taste and resources (a nice combination:). The home was impeccably maintained. The cabin is 5 minutes to all the local restaurants. The owners gave us a guide for their favorites and we agree with them. "Veranda" is the best! Though we had drinks at Old Edwards in the Hummingbird Lounge... and that was a big favorite of ours. We visited the big waterfall nearby (Dry Falls?) which was 5 minutes from the cabin and we golfed at High Hampton in Cashiers.

Our family friends (young couple) stayed in the guest house. They loved it and said they could live in that forever. Our family enjoyed the main house and we had lots of wine time on the covered porch overlooking the lake. The kids loved the hot tub and we sent them out more than one canoe trip!

This is the kind of cabin that you read about; an old world setting - all about nature - and with a strong sense of place, definitely a home to create memories in. Hopefully, they'll let us return next Fall.

June was Perfect / Lake View and Nightime Fires

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in June at this cabin. It's really hard to describe it. We've never stayed at a home like this. It was so authentic, but beautifully updated with collected furnishings. We used the fireplace every night. There was a cord of wood near the front door ... the lake views were beyond soothing.... it felt like we were in a private park. The rockwork and grounds and landscaping were remarkable. I've never seen so many hydrangeas and boxwoods and rhododendrons in one place. The rhodies were in bloom when we were there. My wife plays the piano and she loved having the baby grand and the kids loved the guest house. There is something about this property ... it wraps its arms around you the moment you open the front door. I loved the porch overlooking the lake. We sat for house watching the ducks and turtles. There is a rocking chair on that porch that is perfect. We visited all the best restaurants in town... Lakeside, Verandah, Paoletti and Madisons and they were all no more than 5 minutes away. Our favorite was Veranda. Their porch is magic overlooking Lake Sequoia. We learned that Mirror Lake (which this home overlooks) actually feeds Lake Sequoia. Anyway, we had a very special visit. It's a one of a kind property... quintessential mountain lodge feeling. Oh ... the kids swam in the lake too! They loved it. We preferred the canoe. :) One last thing... they had a caretaker who checked on us 2-3 times during the visit. He fixed a couple of things and that was helpful. Apparently, he's been looking after the property for 15 years. Good Trip!

Owner's Response: Hey Guys, Thanks so much for this review. You know, we have always admired this property and when it came available in 2016, we didn't hesitate. In the 90's we had a small cabin on Mirror Lake that we loved, but we sold it and built a home about 6 miles from downtown Highlands in 2006 that had big mountain views - and we loved that experience, but it was time for us to come back to town again. We love being back in town and the restaurants and shopping are all just a stone's throw away.

Beyond Our Expectations - Lakefront and Close To Town

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying at this property in July of this year. Truly, it exceeded our expectations. The property is beyond special. It's like a shoot from Town and Country magazine. It really feels like you're at an estate home. The grounds are enchanting ... winding stone paths and lake front views everywhere. The furnishings are exquisite, the appointments are thoughtful and it was stocked with firewood for the outdoor fire pit and the living room main fireplace - which we used every night. It was also close to downtown Highlands. (Great restaurants). We also walked around the lake every night and used the two canoes. My daughter and son in law stayed in the guest house... which is ADORABLE .... and my grand kids stayed in the loft.. they loved the loft! This home is kind of like visiting a WPA lodge... it feels historic the moment you walk in it... but it's perfectly preserved and updated and the lake siting can't be described. Oh... my husband was on the internet the whole time... and we enjoyed the flat screen TV's everywhere. My favorite spot was the main terrace overlooking the lake at cocktail hour ... it was just phenomenal .... and there were no great pictures of it. The fire pit was there too. We'll be back. I'm surprised that they rent it all ... it's that special.

Pets are considered: We adore pets... but our home is all but pristine and we wish for it to remain that way for our guests. We own other vacation rentals and guest's pets have been left in rooms to contain them and pets have scratched doors to escape and damaged screens on porches many times. Dogs have also scratched our hardwood floors in some of our vacation rentals. We are very cautious about pets and would like to learn about yours first.
