Santa Caterina is located on the Ionian coast and consists of a hilly part where there are the dinners and a part close to the sea, the promenade.
The territory consists of hills and the coast is rather low and rocky, except for some stretches of sandy nature.
The conformation of the territory is due to the progressive raising and lowering of the sea level, an event witnessed by the presence of numerous fossils of marine species on the mainland. The landscape, therefore, is shown formed by a series of steps that descend towards the sea. There are also numerous caves in the rocky walls. Santa Caterina was born as a defensive outpost against the attacks of the Saracens.
There are, in fact, two sixteenth-century watchtowers with a square plan (Torre Santa Caterina and Torre dell'Alto) placed in a raised position with respect to the sea, built by the Spaniards to oppose the Ottoman raids. They are positioned in such a way that it was possible to communicate via signals with other towers.
It is not far from Porto Cesareo and Gallipoli. In Santa Caterina, together with the other Marines of Nardò, the 5 sails have been assigned by the Blue Guide of the Italian Touring Club and Legambiente.
These places were placed, in 2008, in 5th place among the most beautiful seaside resorts of Italy; while in 2007 at the 6th.
