4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, Sleeps 8
Pretty disappointed with our stay at the Lazy Whale. Yes the house is a bit dated but we could see that from the pictures which represent the house well and that really did not affecting my rating. I saw a one star review on the beginning of June that scared me and I actually called ahead of our trip to see how the bug and bird issues were addressed. I was left feeling confident that the problems would not be seen on my vacation... But unfortunately, I was wrong. The first night while hanging out with the family my son saw a palmetto bug crawling in the floor which I killed. Then I saw and killed two more in the loft area where my son had planned to sleep. Since I have four older children including him, and he was too tall to sleep in a bunk bed, he ended up sleeping on the living room couch for the entire vacation. I called the property management Monday and they sent out pest control but we saw bugs afterwards. We called again and they sent pest control on Thursday but still more bugs. We had two days that we did not kill a bug, I dispatched of 10 bugs total during my stay including palmetto bugs, cockroaches, and a black spider and they were found on every floor. Everyone was on edge each night before going to sleep, I would walk down each room and try to calm them down, especially my youngest daughter. We always felt like the place was crawling and it was only going to be a matter of time before something popped out. Overall we really liked the location of the unit and that's why I bumped the rating to a two. We have been looking for that right house to book year after year but this one will not be it. Overall it needs some work. The loft window is not tight at all, you can hear things from outside very easily and many of the soffits around the house are missing or hanging down.
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay. Your comments and feedback have been forwarded to the appropriate departments for acknowledgement and corrections for future guests.
Besides the house being outdated, it was falling apart as well. Closet doors would come off the hinges, the railings on the deck were put together horribly and looked like they would fall apart, the dryer worked...sometimes. Lost power the second night here and called maintenance who never called back until the next day. Luckily we got the main breaker to turn back on. Too many house problems to list but the things that pushed me over the edge were the multitude of cockroaches we found in the house (among an abundance of other bugs) and these microscopic black bugs that infested us (not sure if they were bed bugs or not). After hearing a weird sound we investigated and found a “crawl space” in the top floor. In there we found pigeons and mounds of dried pigeon feces. I should mention there were air vents that lead to the living room/kitchen from this infested area. Consequently, everyone in our party got ill with respiratory infections including two small children. I HIGHLY do NOT recommend this place. Location is important but living conditions are WAY more important in this case. We will never stay with Hatteras Realty EVER AGAIN!
