About KAREN VISIN
Our family has been coming to Hawaii for over 30 years. We have gone almost every year. We finally bought property in Makaha a few years ago after staying in Waikiki, and the North Shore for years. We used to own a home on the East side of the Island. We fell in love with Makaha because it felt like real Hawaii and is a local area. We loved the relaxed feel of it along with the beautiful uncrowded beaches and amazing sea life. Our family enjoys snorkeling, surfing, paddle boarding and hiking so Makaha was perfect for us. Makaha is also on the west side of the island which is the sunny drier side so we loved the weather. We also loved how the Makaha Valley Mountain Range is towering right above the ocean which is so incredibly beautiful. We hope you love it as much as we do.
Why KAREN VISIN chose Mākaha
You can't go wrong no matter where you stay in Hawaii because everywhere is beautiful. I will tell you why we bought our home. It sits out further towards the ocean than the other homes which gives it not only an incredible ocean view but, also an amazing coastline view as well. We also sit in line with the Makaha Valley so we have cool trade winds that come through our home from the mountains to the ocean which keeps it cooler. Our home also for some reason seems to have the sun setting right in front of it which makes for amazing cocktail hour. We love watching the whales in the morning November through April while drinking our coffee and enjoying sunsets at night with a glass of wine. Life doesn't get better than that. Hope you enjoy our home.

Tranquility and relaxation in paradise!!
This location was awesome! It was perfect for our needs. We were in search of a a much needed retreat away from the hustle & bustle of life. This home exceeded our expectations! I am so grateful that this place exists! It is definitely away from most attractions throughout the island. But if you would rather have it all in one place, not enjoy a scenic drive, not explore
the island, not eat local treats and not support local business then this place is NOT for you. This is a place to slow down, relax and recharge. A place that is good for your being! From the moment we entered we were in awe!! Everything was as described by the owner. The house is well equipped with everything you could possibly need. It even has things you didn’t think you needed ;) The pool was something we enjoyed nearly every evening. The sunsets we saw while sitting on the lanai were incredible . Every morning I was awoken by the sounds of waves crashing in the distance and every night I was lulled to sleep by the relaxing ocean sounds. We walked around the area every morning and were delighted to encounter so many kind people. We were in walking distance of some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Our favorite was Papaoneone beach aka Turtle beach. The area is old and the homes are a mixture of newer and older but it’s clean, calm and pleasant. I never felt unsafe or threatened. We really enjoyed eating local food and listening to karaoke at A&G Bar and Grill and we enjoyed getting sweet treats from The Sugar Hut. There are homeless people in the area but I live in a busy city so I wasn’t bothered by that. This seems to be a very prevalent issue in most places and countries that I’ve travelled to. Don’t let this deter you from exploring the leeward side of the island. If you’re looking for peace, quiet and relaxation this is the perfect get away location from living in a big city or downtown area. Tony the on-site property manager/ owner was occasionally on site, we really only saw him a couple of times and usually on our way out. He was kind and offered to help with anything that we might need. Thank you Karen, Jack and Tony. I loved your home and hope to return again soon!!
When we arrived, the cleaning person was still working on getting the home ready for us.
She was very apologetic and very nice. She took time to give us some recommendations regarding local grocery stores and restaurants. The house is well appointed, with plenty of linens/ towels/ condiments/ cooking utensils etc. This home is NOT air conditioned, so if you are used to cool temps you may want to consider an alternative rental. We stayed in the middle of July and some nights were cool and comfortable but most nights were really warm. Our family stayed in the main house (and were able to take advantage of the winds) and us in the detached bungalow. Despite the bungalow being unobstructed, it rarely had a good breeze passing through it. The owner is gracious enough to equip all of the rooms with at least one large fan which helped. We often took advantage of the pool to stay cool. The views from this home were spectacular. We had the most beautiful sunsets every evening and really enjoyed watching the boats passing by. I loved hearing the waves crash against the shore at night. To get to the north and east side of the island is quite a drive an took us no less than 1 hour each way. You will definitely have to plan ahead as the traffic in HI is heavy. If you are relying on public transport, there is a bus stop just a couple blocks from the rental. I read that some voiced concerns regarding the neighborhood. It is true that the home is located in what to most would not be considered an "upscale neighborhood" compared to homes on the east and north side of the island. However, the neighbors to the left and right were super friendly. We felt safe walking to the small beach just down the road and were delighted when we saw turtles beaching each night. This was an absolutely breath-taking experience and well worth renting this house for that alone. We had no trouble with safety during our vacation (we stayed a full 2 weeks). Thank you for a memorable stay.
Mixed Bag For Sure!
Hello.....after careful consideration of my stay at this property, I have decided to write a review so that other potential renters are aware and do not experience the same pitfalls that I encountered.
1st Star: The views from this property are absolutely as advertised. The ocean crashing in, the sunsets, turtles in the water, etc...absolutely stunning. House was very nice as well.
2nd Star: Makaha Beach and Aki's Beach are nice beaches. We saw turtles at both. Snorkeling at Makaha was really great. Overall...beaches were very nice and kids had a great time there.
1st Missed Star: I was not expecting the owners to be onsite the entire week! I have rented many VRBO's in the past and have never had the owners or their staff literally on property the entire time. Much of my discomfort came from our lack of privacy because of this, as well as, the discomfort in being told we were actually displacing them out of their home for the week we were there. There is a studio apartment (mentioned in the add) that is optional to rent. If you want any privacy at all....you need to rent this studio, because if not, this is occupied by the owners, their son, cousin, and/or maintenance man. I know they were not all staying there, but at any given time, there were 3-4 of them on property most of the time. And as they hang out in "front" of the house most of the week, there is really no way to avoid interacting with them every time you go to the laundry, access the garage, or leave the property. Don't get me wrong....they were all nice enough.....but it was awkward for sure.
2nd Missed Star: Waianae, as eluded to in other reviews, is a very, very mixed bag community. The house is by no means located in an upscale area. No matter where we seemed to go in Waianae, we were always encountering homeless. Combine that with the fact that most every house in the area has a gate locking off access to it...the area does not feel as safe as most other areas on Oahu. Additionally....our gate was continually left wide open by the owner and staff.....which added to my discomfort. I would regularly close it, but if one came or went....I had to go and close it again.
3rd Missed Star: Be aware that there is only one way to get to and from Waianae and it is not on the way to anything. As we rented a car to explore the island, the 20 minute one-way (40 minutes round trip each day) added drive from the Ko Olina area to Waianae was cumbersome for sure.
In response to your email, I want to begin by saying our property is a double lot zoned for more the one unit. Our lot is 1/3 of an acre. The care takers unit that you are referring to is up next to the street. There is only ONE caretaker not THREE. Our home sits on the back of the lot next to the ocean. You can not see the pool, the back yard, ocean front lanai or inside the house from the care takers unit. We do have a gate but, it is not locked. Our home is very private even with the care takers unit. The care taker is there if you need anything like propane, to fix something. give directions, or recommend places to eat etc. The reason we have an onsite care taker is out of respect for our neighbors. Unfortunately some renters break the contract in Hawaii and other places. Instead of just having their family and the people listed on the contract they break the rules and use the house to hold parties, family reunions and weddings due to the tropical location of Hawaii. This is why vacation rentals are so controversial. Neighbors don't want 30 people at their next door neighbors home having a party and parking in their yards. Our home is in a local area which the area is listed when you book so, all you have to do is map it and you will see how far it is from Waikiki etc. plus my listing states that as well. Our home is also extremely reasonable priced for being on the ocean. If you were to book in another area then it would be over a $1000 a night which is why you booked our home in the first place. As for the homeless situation it is all over the island and all of the islands for that matter. Hawaii does have a homeless issue as well as a lot of the United States especially warmer areas. It is a difficult issue and hard to come up with a solution. If you have one, I would love to hear it. Most people don't want to be homeless. Problem is "if you are planning on breaking the rules, you would not want an onsite manager because then you couldn't hold a huge reunion, party or wedding". For most people, it works out great and they are happy to have someone they can come to with a problem that knows the area gives advise on restaurants, hikes, good snorkeling area etc. If you are planning on breaking the rules then do our neighbors and us a favor and please stay somewhere else. We believe in being respectful to our neighbors and our community. Take care and we wish you the best. Karen
This house was perfect for our vacation!
The highlight of this home is the back patio, where we had coffee in the mornings and watched for whales ( we saw whales every day!) and made sure we were back most evenings to see the most spectacular sunsets we have ever seen! The home is clean, very comfortable with 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, and well furnished. Tony, the property manager, was very responsive when we had a brief issue with the WiFi. My husband and I as well as our two adult sons and girlfriend would rent this home again in a heartbeat. The pool is great, and walking distance to a few beaches. We loved being in a quiet area with beautiful views.
Nice home and great view!
This simple 3 bedroom home was clean and ready to enjoy (the kitchen and dining area are nice and big), and the waterfront view is to die for! The home is not on the beach (access is a few doors down from the home), and the two beaches near the home are a bit rough for children (but it is still possible to snorkel and take out the boogie boards). The home was equipped with lots of towels and beach supplies. The best part, seeing and hearing the waves crash at your feet, all day and all night long. Location is "remote" in that it is a good 20-30 minutes to decent shops and restaurants (unless you count fast food).
Property was amazing!
I was concerned about not having AC until I opened the windows! Once open Mother Nature took over and life was good! The location is quiet and offered much authentic Local access. Loved it!
