About Jon Mills
We are Jon and Nicky, we live in the Haut Savoie region of France i.e. in the Alps and have been living in France for fourteen years.
Jon Mills purchased this House in 2018
Why Jon Mills chose St-Dizant-du-Gua
We bought Le Vieux Chai in 2018 with a view to moving there one day as the views of the estuary are stunning and the house has LOTS of space. We love the area and the house as it combines peace and beauty with enough going on within easy striking distance to keep us occupied. The little restaurant at Port Maubert is such a relaxing place to eat and drink and the adjacent fish shop run by the wives of the fishermen is excellent (availability depends on what has just been caught!!). The house has LOTS of space and this part of France is renowned for it's sunny pleasant climate.
What makes this House unique
Space, privacy, large five bedroom farmhouse, fully enclosed large West facing garden with views of the estuary on one side and Cognac vineyards on the other. My personal favourite is sitting on the bench half way down the garden watching the sun set over the water with a glass of something chilled in hand

Glorious, just glorious!
Myself, my husband and four children (aged 16-24) had a marvellous two weeks. The property inside is very spacious and well-equipped, and surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers. The Welcome Pack, was very thoughtful and most welcome after a long hot drive from Calais. Our hosts were ever so helpful, and only a phone call away. The outside space is huge! Plenty of room for all to muck around in, and the pool was glorious - large enough for all six adults to be in together. We had a really super time. The local area is very peaceful and quiet, which we loved. A couple of excellent eateries nearby, with a few places to visit in the vicinity. Nearest beach is a 20/30 min drive, unspoilt and sandy. A truly peaceful and relaxing holiday with excellent WIFI connections. I have no reservations in recommending this lovely home to anyone. Lorraine.
The house sits on a hill overlooking the habitat protected flats of the famous Gironde estuary. The views extend all the way to the sea at Royan and as the house faces West, the sunsets are spectacular with nothing between yourself and the setting sun.
The half hour walk to nearby Port Maubert is beautiful and it is difficult to not see wildlife on the way at any time of year (Stork, Heron, Coypu and many others). The small restaurant and bar overlooking the boats at Port Maubert is lovely spot for an aperitif or to eat whilst looking at the boats.
The rear of the house is surrounded by Cognac vineyards and the adjacent village has the privately run Chateau de Beaulon with it's adjacent distillery. A little way to the south, the heart of Bordeaux red wine country begins at Blaye and Cotes de Bourg and the house overlooks the famous Medoc peninsular (Chateau Margaux, Pauillac, Lafitte-Rosthchild etc!!).
The fine sandy beaches at Saint Georges-de-Didonne, Suzac and Royan are only half an hour away whilst slightly further North the atlantic meets France along the endless sandy "Cote Sauvage."
The adjacent village has a mini supermarket who will order items, but the nearby town of Mirambeau has a large supermarket and everything you might need.
There are plenty of eating options in the vicinity ranging from the friendly Cheval Blanc in nearby Saint Ciers du Taillon to eat in/ deliver or take away pizza restaurants.
Cycling either along the quiet back roads or along the many paths of the estuary flats is a great way to see the surrounding countryside, generally with a view of the water and probably stopping at one of the many villages along the way for a glass of something chilled!!
