About Melissa Camarena
My husband and I live in Minnesota, but Uri is originally from Guadalajara. We have many friends and family there and always look for excuses to visit. Guadalajara is where we met many years ago, so it holds a very special place in our heart. We both love historic homes, the arts, traveling, and staying active with hiking, biking and yoga. We also enjoy being close to the action of a vibrant downtown area.
Melissa Camarena purchased this Villa in 2002
What makes this Villa unique
The house has a magical quality when you walk through the doors. When we arrive, we always put on classical music and transcend to another time and place. In contrast, there is nothing better in the morning than a visit to the bustling market down the street where you can get fresh squeezed carrot juice and quesadillas with handmade tortillas to die for.

House is more beautiful than seen in pictures
I was really impressed by this house. It is super safe and in the middle of everything. I brought along my mother, son, sister, niece and aunt and we were all incredibly comfortable. We felt so at home. The gentleman (I believe his name is Jorge) that welcomed us on the first day is so nice and helpful. It literally is in a great location. Markets, restaurants and even pharmacies are really just around the corner. Thank you again for your hospitality! We will definitely stay here again in a heart beat!
Beautiful magical home. If you are traveling to Guadalajara, you must stay here!
Colonial beauty for a crowd
We were a 3 generation family looking to experience Guadalajara. The villa is lovely - the pictures are accurate. The beds were all comfortable as were the linens. We have never stayed anywhere like it. Inside the villa compound was ample space for our children to run and play without worrying about traffic. The railings were secure.
I was unsure of how accessible the location would be. I needn't have worried. Guadalajara has many pedestrian only streets, including the street the villa opens onto. Walking is very comfortable. In addition, most streets are one-way, so crossings are easy too. We enjoyed walking to the cathedrals, markets and squares in the downtown. The streets are lined with a mix of shops including cafes, bakeries, and restaurants. Uber makes taking a taxi very comfortable & affordable (we went to the zoo, Tlaquepaque, Lucha Libre). We could have an uber within minutes to the corner steps away from the door. We also ordered via UberEats one evening.
We felt safe, though were not naive to the reality that drugs were being offered on the street outside, and there may be someone sleeping on the step outside the villa wall/doorway in the wee hours. This is not intended to be a deterrant, but rather heads-up in case you're not expecting this.
The host, Melissa, was wonderful in helping me to arrange a few things. She connected me with a chauffeur for our crowd who was professional and reasonable for aiport return trip and a day-trip to Lago Chapala. She also contacted a restauranteur across the street who was willing to cater a meal for us.
I'd recommend bringing slip-on shoes for wearing between the rooms of the villa - as it is open air, the city dust settles and is quite dirty a day after the floors are cleaned. Otherwise, we didn't want for anything. There is a pack'n'play for infants.
Thanks for a really neat accommodation & excellent communication.
What a treat in old GDL
Three of us stayed for the Christmas week, and would advise a similar length of stay to anyone, anytime. Plenty of space and bueatiful architecture that doesn't end when you walk out the door. It IS Guadalajara 100% and being there long enough to be part of the local goings on is an experience you could count on as part of it. If you are visiting for a while, like a few weeks, save money while here on a rental car!! You wont need it, seriously, pick up the car when you leave to other sections on your GDL stay. Very proffesional and available host, cant say enough thanks to their entire staff. Raquel, the housekeeper, more than a profesional,, hardly noticed her presence yet she felt like family as leaving was almost an emotional departure. We will stay again, it may be our Christmas each year so be ready for some competition if you want to duplicate our experience.
Just spent a week in this beautiful home! It was absolutely perfect for my family, 5 adults 4 kids, the house was beautiful and very spacious. The proximity to the downtown historic district along with other little shops and restaurants was amazing. We walked to everywhere!! There is an incredible restaurant, Casa de Pedro Loza, one block away...I went there everyday! Also there is a great indoor food market close , I unfortunately only discovered it on my second to last day Our host were very polite and accommodating with requests and fast response times if we had a question. Definitely recommend this home and will absolute stay there again if my travels take me back.
Historic Casa Grande
We enjoyed our stay Casa del Medallon. It is an urban oasis located in historic Guadalajara. Close to the Cathedral and central plaza. The house is as beautiful as depicted in the photos. My wife and I enjoyed the private courtyards for our morning coffee as our two 20 something boys slept in. Plenty of room and privacy for everyone.
The neighborhood -
This is real Mexico - filled with vendors and children playing in the streets. There are wonderful food markets, restaurants and shops close by.
The area of The Santuario is know as the stone church area. There are seven old stone churches nearby and they all play their bells on the hour. The Santuario de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, built in 1777, is one block away and worth a visit.
