Detached Irish Cottage situated at Three Castle Head
The Cottage at Three Castle Head has to be one of the best-located holiday homes in the whole of West Cork. It is set on the land of the beautiful Three Castle Head peninsula where you have full and exclusive access to the 12th Century Castles and lake. There are breathtaking coastal views of Dunlough Bay and the Mizen Head from the house. The house is also just a 5-minute drive to Barley Cove beach, which is considered to be one of Irelands best beaches.
The house is set on the land of a large organic sheep farm. It is very popular with Bird Watchers, Whale Watchers, Photographers and Hikers or those who just want a scenic getaway in one of Irelands most beautiful areas. It is also just a 5-minute drive to the picturesque seaside village of Crookhaven.
The cottage, which was completely renovated in 2011 offers a romantic, rustic and cozy atmosphere with an open fire and traditional Irish cottage style furnishings. Private and tranquil, it is an ideal getaway for couples and family's. The house is surrounded by its own lawns, and garden. Upstairs there is a large bedroom, which can sleep up to 3 people. Downstairs there is a large bedroom with a double bed. There is also a large bathroom on the ground floor, which has a bathtub and shower etc. The kitchen and living room are also both situated downstairs.
Nature Lovers: Three Castle Head is very popular with Bird Watchers - many first sightings of new species to Ireland have taken place here. It is also a very good spot for Whale Watching. Some of the Wildlife here includes Birds, Foxes, Wild Sheep, Rabbits, Seals, Sharks Whales and much more.

Stunning location, basic accomodation
Location - 5 stars - amazing to be able to step out of the front door and immediately experience the wildlife of this beautiful part of Ireland. The coastline is stunning, beautiful wildflowers and for anyone who appreciates birds you will find it hard to get better views of choughs doing all the choughy things that make them such a fabulous bird to watch. The garden surrounding the cottage is lovely and private, away from walkers with views across the bay to Mizen head. The Café is also a nice treat.
Cottage - 2 stars - Don't be misled by the photographs of the other 2 properties on the farm that look to have been recently refurbished - this cottage is very basic accommodation. Although cosy once the fire is lit, the place felt damp & smelt musty when we arrived and needed a lot of airing. It was also a bit dusty. Much of the furniture is old and, although some pieces have a nice vintage feel, most has seen better days. The kitchen, although described as "well appointed", is old and worn and really needs to be replaced. The oven is good but there is very little preparation space, the sink is stained and the cupboards are all damp inside. Some of the utensils are rusty, much of the crockery is chipped (the teapot lid had been glued back together) and all the sharp knives are too blunt to cut anything harder than butter. The double bed is too short for anyone taller than 5 foot 10 and the twin room in the attic has limited head room.
I am sorry that the Cottage didn’t meet your expectations, we seriously consider all feedback and take on board any suggestions on how to improve the cottage. Judging by your comments there seems to be some confusion about the other properties at Three Castle Head. My brother owns the other 2 properties and I don’t advertise them on the Home Away site. I am aware that my bother has a link to my Home Away page on his Three Castle Head website however this is a separate business and entity. In relation to some of your other comments and concerns, the cottage is advertised as a ‘traditional’ and ‘rustic’ Irish cottage. These old Irish cottages are built from stone and not brick so unfortunately they have a tendency towards damp, however we combat this by keeping the heating on for a couple of hours every day in the summer free of charge to tenants. We have never had any complaints about damp, but as we value any feedback I will certainly look into how I can improve this without compromising the historic integrity of the cottage.
Regarding your comments about the crockery and cutlery I am sorry that the items in the house were not at the standard that you had expected, I will now change them and have new crockery and cutlery etc before the 2017 season. I appreciate that the kitchen is slightly old and there are plans in place to have it upgraded, however I think that the condition and size, of the kitchen is very accurately advertised and documented on the photographs I have of it on the Home Away site. There is a lot of very expensive old antique Irish furniture in the house which is consistent with this type of accommodation and is well documented on the photographs on the Home Away site. The bed, which has a new standard size double mattress on it, is a very old antique Irish brass bed. I myself am 6 foot 1 and have slept in this bed without any problems and it has never been flagged up as an issue before, so I feel there is a slight exaggeration on your part here, but again apologies if this was an issue for you. In any case as mentioned we take great pride in all the wonderful comments and feedback we have had for the cottage over the years which has been overwhelmingly positive as can be testified to by our consistent 5 star ratings, in one of the most beautiful parts of the whole country, however we must also actively try and improve the accommodation so we will take on board all your comments.
Where Sea and Land meet
Whereelse in Europe you can find a more unique place to spend holidays?
Every minute the nature shows you that not far from your Cottage the end of our continent shows up.
Sitting at terrace looking over sheeps and birds. The fire gives you a warm evening.
Falling asleep with the huge Atlantic waves in your ears.
Fantastic. Everything in place in the Cottage. Landlord in nearby Farmhouse and Café is always on board and helpful.
A wonderful week. Thank you.
Somewhere in Time.
My wife and I (64 and 53 years young) booked Three Castles cottage for one week in early June 2015 and were treated to a most wonderful time at Pascal's house. The previous year, same dates, we went to St. Finian's Bay, Kerry and we brought the finest of weather along with us then also. The location of Pascal's cottage could not be better placed as you have so much of natures offering on hand each day of your stay. You have the beautiful beaches at Barley Cove to explore and all to yourself at times. Mizen Head lighthouse and coastal views will be a treat for sore eyes if you get there early with your camera and binoculars. Whale and sea lions can be spotted offshore from on high.
The Sheep's Head trails will also take you to a small lighthouse path, well serviced and catered for. On this path you might find yourself alone, but in good company, you will revel in its scenery as you plod "The Poets Way" for a 5-11 km loop walk along it's northern coastal edge.
Some of West Cork's finest scenery can be reached from here if you have an adventurous streak in you or you can simple take all that is on offer from the many paths that surround your cottage. Delightful morning walks take you to Three Castles castle and lakes, discovering loop trails where only sheep have trodden. Each day can provide a new discovery as you find your way through this gentle mystical landscape and enjoy the many views from on high appreciating a fairy tale mix of grassy lake and stony fort. You can view Fastnet lighthouse in the distance south across Mizen Head or preview your trip to Sheep's head, a short distance across Dunmanus Bay to the north.
So much can be reached from this lovely location. The cottage has been renovated and has everything you might need including a warm and cosy atmosphere. You will want for nothing. It has it all. We brought the sunshine. We saw all of it's finery and we left with so many great memories, thanks to Yvonne and Pascal.
The search for our summer holiday location came to an abrupt end, when we looked at the photographs on this web page. We quickly decided that this is the place where we (parents with 3 teen agers) want to go! And it was even better! We spent a week full of nature, wind, ocean, sun and scenery in this wonderful cottage.
Really lovely place; great view and very kindly owners; normally a Cottage you recommend only best friends; stayed there with the family (two kids, age 11 and 16)
Uns hat unser Urlaub in Three Head Castle sehr gefallen und wir haben die Erholung in der reinen Natur gefunden, die wir suchten. Wir bedanken uns sehr für die warmherzige und freundliche Aufnahme.
Golf: There are many great Golf Courses in West Cork including the Old Head of Kinsale which is one of the Best Links Courses in the Country. There are other nearby links courses in Bantry and Glengarriff. The nearest golf course is in Schull which is a 25 minute drive from the house.
