Casita Sombria, Your private Santa Fe getaway.

Bedrooms Studio
Space 450 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-3)

We would like to introduce you to Casita Sombria.

Classically Santa Fe with its adobe walls, brick floors, and kiva fireplace, our studio casita is available year round for short-term rental. Its central location in a quiet residential neighborhood is just one block north of Second Street (San Mateo) near Cerrillos Road. The casita is at the end of a dead end street giving it a secluded feel yet with easy access to the growing Second Street neighborhood as well as to the rest of town and the interstate. The Santa Fe Rail Trail is a few blocks away, the Plaza just two miles away, and Museum Hill is even closer.

The casita shares the lot with our home so we are on-site to help with any needs. It has its own gated off-street parking, a firm, comfortable queen-sized bed, and a well equipped kitchen. It also has a loveseat/sleeper that converts to a twin bed appropriate for an accompanying child. The bathroom is relatively large and light (a clerestory window gives good natural light) and has a combination tub/shower. Electric baseboard heat in the bathroom and a gas wall heater in the main area provide plenty of heat while a working kiva fireplace can be used for heat or just to add cozy, romantic atmosphere (we provide wood). Wireless cable internet is provided. The small flagstone courtyard is fully enclosed by a wood fence.

While the casita is one-story, there is a step from the outside to get in, from the entry and kitchen to the main room, and from the main room to the bathroom. Thus, it is not wheelchair accessible or appropriate for someone with very limited mobility.

Good pets will be considered. Please inform us in advance if you intend to bring a pet.

No smoking is allowed in the casita.

We have a three night minimum. Check in time is 4:00pm and check out is 10:00am (unless other arrangements are made prior to your stay).

Pursuant to City of Santa Fe ORDINANCE NO. 2009-40, the Permit # of this vacation rental is 11-00104535.

Cozy, quiet, and perfect

  • 5 of 5

What a great, comfortable stay. I took a solo vacation to Santa Fe from Austin, and I am so glad I picked Casita Sombria. It was just what I was looking for -- close to everything, comfortable, and convenient. The private driveway was a super touch, and the friendly owners make checkin and checkout a breeze. Would definitely stay here again!

This casita was absolutely perfect. It was warm, with every amenity you could possibly imagine. The bed and bedding were amazingly soft and fresh. The bathroom was stocked with toiletries, and the kitchen was fully equip with all utensils, and staples someone might want.

The casita is at the end of the road, making it extremely quiet and safe feeling, and is off of Cerrillo's, making it within 4 miles of pretty much anywhere you want to go in downtown. It is only about 2 miles from Meow Wolf (a must do in SF).

There was an abundance of firewood - we made fires 3 of our 5 nights. The wifi connection was very strong, and there was a cable TV, and a bookcase that included games and movies.

My 5 year old daughter and I both LOVED the casita and will absolutely stay here on a future visit to Santa Fe.

Private, Cozy Casita

  • 5 of 5

My sister and I stayed here for four nights and we loved it! The bed was very comfortable and the pull-out sofa, I'm told, was as well. It's very private and quiet. The full size kitchen was great for cooking and there is also small charcoal grill just outside. If you're not into cooking, there's a great place to eat a few blocks away, called the Pantry Restaurant, it's a must. I would definitely recommend this charming property.

Comfy, comfy, clean, warm, welcoming, safe

  • 5 of 5

Nothing like having your own security gate to your own private parking spot to your own casita! Felt safe, and yet loved to warm and whimsical overall feeling of the place. Truly quiet except for birdsong....Everything worked, LOVED the thoughtfulness of a power strip affixed to the wall to attach all my manner of digital devices. Perfect writer/creative retreat. The bed was perfect, and even the throw on the loveseat was fantastic. Kept myself from taking that and the bed coverlet that kept me warm all night. Large closet, great bathroom, with everything labeled completely. Wendy thought of everything. I'll be back.

Very comfortable stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed four nights and were very comfortable. Description and pictures are very accurate. Not close to downtown, but convenient and within walking distance of Second St. Brewery! Owners are very nice, flexible and have installed an efficient check in system. Highly recommend.

About Wendy Gerner

A love of the mountains brought us to Santa Fe nearly 20 years ago. We have found it to be home. The natural beauty, opportunities for outdoor activities, and diversity of people keep us engaged. Having a vacation rental has introduced us to many varied and interesting people. We enjoy the opportunity to share this 'City Different' with all visitors.

Wendy Gerner purchased this house in 1996

Why Wendy Gerner chose Santa Fe

I made the rookie mistake of falling in love with this property on first sight. It is hard to negotiate a purchase on that foundation. While the strength and positive presence of the main house was the immediate attractive force, the casita made it workable. We lived in the casita for four and a half years during the renovation of the main house. During that time we learned that it had it's own positive force (our marriage survived a major remodel). While not immediate to Santa Fe's most famous draws, the Plaza and Canyon Road, the feel of neighborhood makes this a wonderful place to actually live.

What makes this house unique

This casita is in an old Santa Fe neighborhood. While having easy access to the tourist draws of Santa Fe, it is quiet and off the beaten path. As on-property owners we are readily available to answer questions, offer suggestions, and generally try to make your visit as enjoyable as possible.
