About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 Bath Octagon Cottage in the Woods - Close to Town/Attractions

Beauty and relaxation await you at the Sun and Moon Cottage. Imagine waking up each morning to a pleasant view of the woods outside your window and the sound of birds singing in the trees. You might even spot a deer among the foliage. Surrounded by the tranquility and serene sight of a holly grove and tall deciduous trees, you are nonetheless only 5 minutes from a well-stocked grocery that offers both organic and conventional produce, with easy access. You are only 7 minutes from Bryson City – a quaint town that offers local shops and rides on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad – and from there, you are only 5 minutes from the entrance to the Deep Creek section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At Deep Creek, you can hike, tube, horseback ride, and picnic. There are three gorgeous waterfalls to see along the way on the Deep Creek trail - all easily accessible. The Nantahala Outdoor Center is only 15 minutes away, where you can enjoy the plaza, eateries, whitewater rafting, and zip lining.

The town of Cherokee is also only 15-20 minutes away, where you can visit the local shops and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, enjoy a replica of a 16th century Cherokee village, experience the outdoor drama “Unto These Hills,” purchase Native American arts and crafts, and be entertained by local Cherokee dancers around town and storytellers by a fire. Whichever adventure you choose to make your own, your days and your evenings can also be spent at the Sun and Moon Cottage – grilling outside or relaxing by the chimenea on the back deck, enjoying the birds and squirrels from the front deck, or unwinding in the whimsical yet cozy atmosphere inside that includes a well-equipped kitchen, free Wi-Fi, free access to Netflix and Hulu, surround sound stereo, and a contemporary style that pairs nicely with the natural environment surrounding it. Let us help you feel at home away at the Sun and Moon Cottage.

About Kathy de Cano, Property Manager and Owner / Julie Kirby, Contact Concierge

I originally hail from Kentucky, where I was raised, but I have lived, studied, traveled, and worked in many places, including Barranquilla, Colombia, and several other parts of that country; Los Angeles, California; Mexico City; Veracruz, Mexico, and many other parts of that country; Hawaii; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Flagstaff, Arizona; several parts of Spain; the Dominican Republic; the Cayman Islands; Turks and Caicos; Canada; Costa Rica; North Carolina; and Georgia, where I currently reside. I have also seen a large number of the states in the United States during my work and travels. The North Carolina mountains are without a doubt one of the most special places in the world. As a Cherokee descendant, they are especially dear to me. You will find bits and pieces of all these experiences expressed subtly or blatantly in the Sun and Moon Cottage. It is cozy, quirky, whimsical, full of natural beauty, and eclectic - much like me! :) You will notice a lot of bamboo and rattan in the house. I love them for their natural beauty and their sustainability. I also instruct my staff to use mainly bio-based products when they clean. The beauty that will surround you as you stay with us is something I feel we must support and maintain. I trust that you will find the beauty of the Sun and Moon cottage as soothing and calming as I do. Enjoy your stay!

Why Kathy de Cano, Property Manager and Owner / Julie Kirby, Contact Concierge chose Bryson City

I bought the land the cottage is built on in order to create my ideal place. I had been to the North Carolina mountains many times as a child, and the area always resonated with me on a deep level. As a teacher, I felt a calling to come to the area for what I could share, but I also needed to get back in touch with my roots after having lived outside the country for so long. In dreams, I kept seeing myself in the land of my ancestors. I wanted the place I built on to have been kept as natural as possible, and it had to be wooded and yet easily accessible by road and close to work and town. This beautiful tract of land fit the bill perfectly. The house is an octagon because I like the flow of it and the open floor plan concept. I had seen it all in my mind from far off, so finally, I brought the dream to fruition. My work has taken me elsewhere, but I could not part with this beautiful place, and I knew also that I should not keep it to myself. I have many happy memories in the Sun and Moon cottage. I know you will make delightful memories in it, too.

What makes this cottage unique

The first time I saw the lot I had the cottage built on, I knew it was the right place. The holly grove promised privacy on one side of the house even in winter, and there were so many birds and squirrels about. I have seen deer out front or in the drive on numerous occasions, and the opossums will make you think there is someone walking around outside until you realize that it is just them doing their nocturnal runs. Sometimes, they can even be spotted in the trees, but not to worry. They do not bother anyone, and they keep the area pest free. Bunnies often nibble at the clovers, too. I love wildlife and being surrounded by woods. Afternoons or evenings on the decks provide such an air of serenity. There is privacy and connection all at the same time, and yet, you can easily drive a short distance to get whatever you need or enjoy all the area has to offer. It doesn't get much better than this.

Charming and cozy cottage!

  • 5 of 5

I traveled here with my retiree parents after Christmas from KY to enjoy some quiet time before heading back to work after the New Years. The cottage is in a great wooded location and is likely very beautiful when it is warm outside, as it was still quite nice in the dead of winter. The interior is nicely decorated and had everything we needed. My father was disappointed there is no cable tv, but the rest of us enjoyed the free wifi and Netflix. It is in a great location in Bryson City, North Carolina, which was a great gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains Park. There is a big grocery store one mile away, and plenty of really great restaurants and the people were very nice. I enjoyed it a lot more than the very touristy and crowded Gatlinburg. We spent one entire day driving through the Park, we went through Cherokee then up to Gatlinburg, then into Cades Cove and back to Bryson City. We stopped at several overlooks and even did a few small hikes along the way. The second day we spent riding the train to Dillsboro, which was also fun. Then we came back and drove the Dragon's Tail and back to Bryson City for a nice Italian dinner and shopping. Overall, a great little winter getaway!

What a charming, cool, octagon cottage

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this charming, octagon cabin. The inside and outside was beautifully designed with great attention to detail. Plenty of space for 2-4 people to move around. Nice open kitchen, dining and living area. The windows are nice and large allowing you to take in the wonderful views in almost every room. The cabin has barely any other homes around it. It is surrounded by woods. This is one of the cleanest properties we stayed at.

The owner and manager were very accommodating.

It lived up to it's title, lovely and peaceful mountain cottage.
