Built on a dramatic rock outcropping at Crystal Mountain’s most striking promontory.
Information provided by the owner: “My father originally bought a home on beautiful Crystal Mountain about 1970. There was one lot that no one bought because it featured gigantic rocks that couldn’t be blasted or carted away. My father had a vision to use the boulders as his foundation, and my parents felt that building on top of them would bring them a little closer to Heaven.
The artwork on the front porch is called “Hey Diddle Diddle.” It was commissioned by my parents from an artist whom they met at Art in the Park. It is a large piece of driftwood that my mother had found, adorned with various implements from her youth growing up on an Arkansas farm — milk stool, plow parts, etc. When he delivered it the artist said “he’s waiting for his cow to come back. Speaking of Arkansas, there is a single red brick to the right of the fireplace. This is from the original building of the Arkansas Baptist Hospital, from which my mother and her two sisters all graduated as RN’s after leaving the farm in Yell County.”
The rooms are decorated and furnished to evoke luxurious country comfort. Modern communications abound thanks to Direct TV and wifi. But some of the most amazing things to experience are on the walls and the ceilings, in rooms are filled with reminders of the owners’ heritage. Among them you’ll find
Original paintings of the family’s matriarchs adorn the upstairs – Mrs. Mae Phillips of Mississippi City, Mississippi, and Mrs. Virgie Wilson of Plainview in Yell County, Arkansas.
The gas fireplace is hand-built with local stone, plus one piece of Arkansas bauxite whose shape betrays its origin.
The “Farm Room” downstairs has photographs of the Mrs. Wilson’s Arkansas farm.
The “Quilt Room” features a 19th-century quilting frame. If you don’t spot it at first, you’ll be sleeping under it!
The master bedroom includes other décor that evokes family and memory, including a pretty striking invoice from a hospital visit almost a century ago. My how times have changed!
The vista and relaxation can be extended for larger parties or family events! Discuss arranging a stay at the SaVista Lodge next door, connected to Heaven’s Gate by a beautiful swinging bridge replica from Grandfather Mountain.
