Spacious Bungalow in Cooper-Young with Fireplace

Bedrooms 4
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

This bungalow was built in the early 1920s but has seen many upgrades and expansions since then. My favorite hobby has always been perfecting my home, which means it is light-filled, well-decorated, and comfortable. The first floor features a master bedroom with a king bed and Roku TV (and new mattress), a secondary bedroom with a single daybed and a roll-out single trundle (also new mattresses), two bathrooms with claw-foot tubs (and shower in the master bathroom) connected to both bedrooms, a front study with a piano and desk, a large yet cozy living room with a wood-burning fireplace and a Smart TV, a spacious and well-stocked kitchen connected to a dining room that also functions as a sun room, and a laundry room with a washer and dryer. Every room in the downstairs has large windows that receive plenty of light. Upstairs are two more bedrooms that overlook the backyard, a full-sized futon for extra sleeping space, and a large bathroom. We have a classic Southern front porch with a wooden swing and plenty of seating and an even bigger two-level back deck with a grill. The backyard has a tree house and is lush and nicely landscaped. It is perfect for bird watching, as well as relaxing in private. We also have street and driveway parking for two to three cars.

Oh! And, as you will see, my husband's hobby is books—thousands of them. Feel free to browse through anything you can reach during your stay.

Amazing weekend staycation

  • 5 of 5

I surprised my wife by having some family and friends come in from out of town and we booked Sandy's amazing Cooper Young space for us all to stay at. We couldn't have been more pleased with the wide open kitchen which allowed us to all hang out comfortably. Likewise, the character of the place, including all of the books, helped make the weekend even better!

I highly recommend booking this place if you ever have a larger group, or simply want a relaxing weekend to sit and read or enjoy some company.

Great Cooper-Young Bungalow... and so many books!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at this perfect example of Mid-Town Memphis homes during October 2016. As former Mid-Town Memphians, we were looking for a classic bungalow with all the character you get in an older home and the house did not disappoint. With 4 bedrooms and 3 baths the house would easily sleep 8 people if needed, maybe 10 if people slept on the couches. We didn't have that many, and enjoyed having all the space to spread out. The kitchen and dining table were large enough that we invited our family over and made dinner for about 10 people. Liked the gas stove in preparing dinner and liked the dishwasher in cleaning up. The owners were even nice enough to leave a high-chair out for our youngest guest.

During our stay we walked to the restaurants in Cooper-Young almost every day. We also ran all over the neighborhood, including just down the street to Overton Square, which has been completely redeveloped, and Overton Park (Zoo, art, dog park, etc.). A shuttle (the Roo) runs between C-Y and Overton Square Friday - Sunday now if you're not up for a longer walk. We thought about riding but ended up just walking or Ubering.

If you have a larger party be advised, one of the bathrooms doesn't have a stand-up shower, just a tub. Also, as the owner made us well-aware, the stairs to the second floor are very steep (looks like they're the former attic stairs, but the attic has been converted to livable space). Two bedrooms and one bath are upstairs, so keep that in mind if steep steps are a problem for you. We had no issues. The owners even left a baby gate we used at the bottom to make sure the little one didn't try to go climbing while we weren't watching. Finally, be advised if you have a larger group with several cars parking may be a minor issue. We were only able to fit 2 cars in the driveway (1 or 2 more might fit if some vegetation gets cut back). When we had guests they parked on the street, but some ended up a good distance away - it seemed like many of the locals park on the street rather than in their driveways for some reason.

Maybe our favorite part about the house, besides the great location and attentive owners, were the hundreds and hundreds (thousands??) of books! There were bookshelves everywhere, with every type of book. You could rent the house for a year and not come close to reading everything inside. I could see us returning someday to have a lower-key vacation, just sitting on the porch reading all day.

Lovely House

  • 5 of 5

My group, book club retreat 6 ladies, enjoyed our stay very much. The house is lovely with everything you need for an easy stay- well stocked with towels, sheets, kitchen items, bathroom items, etc. - no need to bring much at all. The backyard is a great place to sit and visit- beautifully landscaped. For those interested in renting the house, please be aware that the stairs to the second floor which includes 2 bedrooms and a futon are very steep. Definitely not a reason to not rent the house, but make sure that people are super careful on the stairs. The neighborhood was welcoming- we took multiple walks around the neighborhood. The house was located close to all of the tourist attractions. We would definitely rent this house again!! The owner was very quick to answer any questions through texts. The house was clean. Our trip included a trip to Graceland- very fun and close- and some yummy bbq from Central Ave. BBQ- also very close- and an incredible breakfast at Brother's Juniper.

A+ Home

  • 5 of 5

This bungalow was great! The location was awesome. The neighborhood was nice and it was easy to get to all of the tourist attractions. The fenced backyard was perfect for our dog. The bed was extremely comfortable. The house was eclectic...we loved the decor, especially the thousands of books. A+ for charm and comfort. We would definitely stay in this beautiful home again should we venture to Memphis.
