About James Parker
We are local family that enjoy the beach and outdoors. We have a 11 year old and an 14 year old so the home has plenty of kids items. There is a baby crib, high chair, books, games, some beach toys, and generally kid friendly. We purchased this home in 2001 and it has many great memories of raising our first born here. We love the friendly and close nit neighborhood and visit the home whenever there are openings.

Why James Parker chose Isle of Palms
A long time ago we came across an article in a magazine that talked about Isle of Palms being one of the best places to raise children so after having a wonderful visit- we decided to buy our first home here!

Great spot for a family vacation
We had a great time at this property, staying 5 nights around Memorial Day. While we love Charleston and have been there before, this was our first trip to the IOP and our first trip with children. There were actually 7 of us total: 2 couples and a total of 3 kids. This property is very kid/family friendly. There is a great pool (that can be heated --but not necessary in May) that was really clean and well taken care of (the pool cleaners came by multiple times during our stay). There is an air conditioned detached garage with a pool table and a big-screen TV. The property also features a play area for kids including clean sand in multiple areas for sand castles and the like. There is a basic charcoal grill we used a couple of nights. The number 1 hit for us as it relates to activities, though, was a nice 6-passenger electric golf cart for our continuous use. Having this was huge for our large group because it allowed us to travel all over the area including to the beautiful area beaches, markets, and elsewhere--even over to Sullivan's Island for dinner and ice cream. Golf carts, in general, are a popular mode of transportation here and legal on the streets. We had a rental car but it was so much easier to get anywhere you needed to be on the golf cart.
While we didn't spend much time inside, the home was nice and clean and very spacious with a large eat-in kitchen that could easily accompany 10+ people. The beds and bedding were nice as well. This property does not feel 'new' nor is it advertised as such by the owner. There is a certainly a level of wear and tear throughout the property and I would suggest that there are aspects of the interior that are probably due for a refresh. However, for our group, particularly with three small children, this was comforting as we didn't feel like it was the end of the world if something got a bit messy or if there was an accident and something got scuffed up.
Overall, I would definitely return. Our '5-star' rating is heavily weighted to the location of the property to area attractions (beach in particular) as well as the outside amenities, including the pool where our party spent a lot of our time. The 5-star rating isn't based on the luxuriousness of the property. Again, it was clean and functional and very much as described in the listing. If you select this property for your vacation, you should have a great trip. Reach out to James Parker (owner) with any questions before your arrival. Enjoy!
perfect getaway for relaxation
My husband and I were a bit weary of this place because of the reviews but we really enjoyed our brief getaway at this home. You can tell the owner truly cares and is putting forth the extra effort to make this home nicer. The neighborhood is quiet and the outside was like a tropical paradise. We didn't go out much for dinner because the kitchen and outdoor area had everything we needed. We will definitely come back with our family as this home has plenty of room. The VRBO app had tons of information and the owners live close by and helped us with the technology. Overall this is a great house for a relaxing vacation!
needs cleaning up
When we arrived the A/C was not working and so we called and no one came until the following night. So we tried to open windows but only a few had screens and some didn't open at all. There were no ceiling fans in any of the rooms. So we had no air for the first night. The next day we had to use the leaf blower to clean off the porch off the kitchen because of all the foliage falling from all the trees, but in a hour there was just as much as before. The grill was a joke the pool table was falling apart, the air hockey table didn't work properly. They need to take new pictures because there is no dart board and there is only one heater by the pool and that doesn't have atop on it. there is an open hole where the other one was and they put a big flower pot upside down over it. There was also no serving bowls, or platters. The pool was a mess with all the foliage that kept falling from the trees, and on to you while trying to keep it from going in your drink the same was true of the porch off the kitchen we tried to have some cheese and crackers and glasses of wine but we had to cover everything because the foliage kept falling off the trees. Need to trim back the tree.
So, no we will not be staying there again.
Pat, we are sorry your stay wasn’t pleasant. One of your main points was the amount of leaves our grand oaks drop. Charleston is known for its Grand Oaks and they are protected by the City. In the spring, they drop all the leaves from the year before and pollen pods. The live oak leaf drop is something we do our best to combat as does the pool maintenance company and landscape company that maintains the exterior of the home.
AC unit was replaced in 2016 with both new condenser and air handler. We spoke at 8pm Sunday night and once I hung up I immediately called ARS who sold us the unit and they said they would send someone out. It was 67 degrees so I did not feel the need to bring portable units that night. When ARS arrived they turned the unit off and back on and it has worked fine since.
We do our best to stock our home with as much as possible including kitchen utensils, gadgets, cookware, bakeware and serving items although throughout the season items disappear and break. When we notice or are made aware if missing items, we replace them promptly. If anyone of our guest need something we just go and buy it so any future guests can keep that in mind.
There was a pool picture of when the pool was just a few years old that had 2 commercial patio heaters. We don’t plan to replace them as they were hardly used and the fire pit and pool heater get way more use. The picture has since been replaced with all new pictures on May 5th and they have been marked with the date for everyone to see.
This place was big enough for the family however was not as clean as expected when arriving. Also no directions on how to work anything including the pool heat, gas fire pit etc. the grill was a joke. It shows there are 2 there is only one park type grill. The outside and the pool were so filthy when we arrived that we had to chase down the owner to get someone there to clean it. The heater for the pool consistently broke down and half the time it wasn’t even heated yet the owner decided to charge us an outrageous amount to heat the pool for maybe 2 days of of the 7. I would not use this place again unfortunately.
Nick, while there is no excuse for not having a quality product, we did have 2 snow birds come and stay the winter and that hampered our spring deep cleaning. My wife and two children stayed in the home for the 5 days May 1st to 5th and our family was able to get quite a bit of work done. The pool heater is a great insurance policy, if it is cold out we can make summer water. I received your call when your big party started and you wanted to put the fire pit on. You provided payment information and we unlocked the propane gas for use. A little later that night you called and wanted to heat the pool so I gave you instructions on how to do that. Saturday morning I drove 10 blocks to clean the pool and I found beer cans and vodka bottles, as well as a 10,000-gal pool that had been heated to 104 degrees and a fire pit running at full blast. I turned them off and turned the gas valve off so you did not waste unwanted propane. A little later in the week you wanted to turn it on again so I gave you the valve location. We don’t a fee or surcharge for gas, you only pay for the gas used and the guests are the ones in control of the amount of gas used as well as the final amount.
Everyone’s preference of what a good grill is, is different. Propane grills were hard to manage, either they left them filthy or it was a complaint that they were dirty, or ran out of gas. While visiting the Grand Canyon we used their park grills and I realized that these grills always work, stay relatively clean, and I like the taste of charcoal grilled food better so I bought one for my homes. To this day I don’t regret it.
Some things we did during our stay; replaced the kitchen faucet, recovered the bar stools, repainted the porches, retiled the master bath floor, removed unused soap dispensers, threw out old pool and sand toys, pressure washed and bleached everything, blew off the roof from leaves and was able to enjoy our stay a little bit as well. We take pride in our home and do our best to prepare it prior to guests’ arrivals as well as be sure we are always available for any question during your stay.
Property has all a family would want for a beach getaway...
Owner is very conscientious about ensuring that everything is to your liking and the maintenance staff visit numerous times a week to take care of the pool, property etc.
Very quiet neighborhood with a lot of great friendly neighbors make the rental a very enjoyable experience.
End of the Year experience
Each year I try to spend at least a week at my home to understand what the complaints and issues are that may arise from year to year, even though I only live a couple of streets away. You can walk by a sink a thousand times, but until you have turned it on and off to brush your teeth you won’t catch the small minor issues that it may have. During my stay this week, I used the hall shower. The issue of “not enough hot water” in this shower turned out to be that the last repair switched the hot and cold water. This meant that if you wanted hot water you had to turn on the cold and vice-versa. This issue was actually repaired before my arrival, but I took a hot shower in that bathroom just to make sure. The kitchen stools were recently recovered to freshen them up and the sofas were also steam cleaned. I was happy to be able to meet with the painting contractor, the handyman to fix a few things, and an outdoor living specialist to recommend some exterior upgrades. I had a great week and it was nice to fix some of the maintenance issues during my stay..
