Keep scrolling to read the small print.
Despite the incredibly detailed description of this property and the large number of photos, any suggestion that this property might be unsuitable for someone with restricted mobility can only be found by scrolling past the property details, customer reviews, & adverts for other properties, then clicking on a link that says 'facilities'. At the very bottom, in the small print, is a mention of steep spiral staircases, but even then these are described as 'short' flights between floors. The staircases are about 11 or 12 stairs between each floor (not much fewer than the average house), and are extremely narrow.
If there had been any indication of the steepness and narrowness of these staircases in the description, or any photos among the 45 that included the lamp outside, the television and four of the shower, we would not have booked this property. My wife who has minor mobility issues due to hip and knee surgery, was unable to use the stairs unaided and had to come down backwards much to her distress.
Additionally our 19 month old granddaughter was meant to be arriving with her parents the next day, but until we arrived we were unaware that there was an unguarded opening directly from the living room to the basement down another very steep spiral staircase. The owner knew we were bringing a small child because we asked about a high chair, but made no mention of the need for a stairgate.
We had to quickly find another more suitable property through another site. The owner refused to give us any refund despite the fact we had paid for 4 nights and only stayed for one. He told us we knew what we were getting, which we totally dispute. If we had known about the narrow steep spiral staircases to every floor or the unguarded opening to a steep staircase to the cellar we would not have booked the property.
The owner prides himself on being a super host but he wasn't super to us.
"We are so sorry that this customer found the cottage unsuitable and we did offer to accommodate him in another one of our cottages but unfortunately they were all booked. In our opinion the description of the cottage is very accurate. We always ensure to communicate with every guest before checking in and if the customer had concerns about anybody in their party having mobility problems, or suitability for young children and made us aware, we would have been more than happy to go into more precise details about specific number of stairs etc. We advertise very clearly that it is a 18th century cottage set on 4 floors with a steep spiral case. We can not assume that it is unsuitable for everybody with mobility problems as obviously it all depends on the individual person and their abilities. In this case we did offer a high-chair but a stair gate would not be able to fit the opening, which you can clearly see in the photo's. Obviously the small print is there for a reason, which this customer clearly did not read otherwise he would not have booked the cottage. We feel if the customer had any concerns he should have contacted us prior booking. To receive a 1 star review is obviously very upsetting to us as we feel that in this case it is unjustified. We pride ourselves in our excellent service to all of our customers and normally receive 5 star reviews."
Lovely secluded property
We spent 2 nights in Broadstairs staying in this lovely cottage. It was super clean. It's in a great location tucked away in a quiet courtyard. Free parking nearby. We are regular visitors to Broadstairs and would love to stay here again in the future.
Stay Union Square cottage in Broardstairs
We really enjoyed our stay at this cottage in Union Square in Broardstairs, it is in an ideal position close to the beach, bars and restaurants, there are nice walks along the coast and walking to Ramsgate is just 45mins walk. There was a firework display on the beach on one of the evenings which we watched from one of the restaurants overlooking the beach. I would have given 5 stars but for the problems we had with one bathroom being out of action and the shower playing up in the other bathroom, we were pre-warned by Phil Dennis that one bathroom was damaged by previous guests and shower issue was more an inconvenience than a problem. Phil Dennis dealt with the problems as quickly as he could but was in the hands of local plumbers availability, he kindly gave us a couple of bottles of prosecco and paid for us to have breakfast whilst repairs were taking place. I would recommend staying at this property we were just unfortunate with the plumbing problems.
Thank you for your kind review.
I really appreciate the 4 stars you gave and I can't apologize enough about the unfortunate circumstances with one of the bathrooms being out of action while you were staying, you were all very understanding about this situation and I thank you for that.
On a brighter note I am so pleased that you all enjoyed your stay and what Broadstairs has to offer!
We really hope you all come back to this beautiful cottage and explore some more of the Isle as there is plenty more to see and do.
Best wishes to you all!
The best for our family
We had the best cottage in Broadstairs for our family of three children, 10, 7 and 5, and two adults. Everything we could ever need was in the house. Nice, clean and cosy. Very nice location with the quiet square outside the front door so no worries of kids vs cars. We loved being so close to the sea and at the same time not far from restaurants, grocery stores and not too far from the train station (as we came to Broadstais by train). We also loved the outside of the cottage with the walls build with these beautiful stones. We recommend staying here!
There are many beautiful beaches within a short drive or walk from the property. The glorious golden sand and vintage rides on Viking Bay are perhaps the most famous but there are many other stunning bays very close by.
The cottage is located within a 10 minute walk to Broadstairs railway station which is well connected including a high speed link to St Pancras International in London.
with high speed rail links to London. Only 1 minutes walk to historic Broadstairs with its sandy beaches, fine restaurants and quaint English seaside feel as well as a short distance from Ramsgate, Sandwich and Canterbury.
