Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, Sleeps 7

Enjoy staying in the original farmhouse on our country property which was once an operating apple orchard. It has the old Sonoma county charm but is newly remodeled for ease of living. While it does have a country relaxed vibe about it, this space is top quality understated luxury. For ex. highest-end luxury mattresses, leather and down sofas, white marble counter tops, new farmhouse ceramic sinks and over-sized ceramic bathtub.

It has 3 bedrooms. The first two have high quality queen-size mattresses and dressers for your clothes. The super-charming "sleeping porch" (fully-heated) has a full-size and twin size bed. The newly remodeled kitchen has everything you need to cook, including our farm fresh eggs (usually) and whatever other goodies are in bounty at our farm at the time. There is a big family room with comfy couches, a flat screen smart tv, games, a table for dining or playing cards. There is a newly landscaped backyard which is fenced in and completely private. It has a decomposed granite dining area, a fountain, table with seating and umbrella and propane bbq. There is also a small veggie-flower garden for the guests use. The house itself is set back from the quiet country road with a large tree filled front yard. The private backyard is surrounded by beautiful redwood trees. Our family home is at the far other end of the property.

Our property is located in the Twin Hills area of Sebastopol. This desirable area is known for its rolling hills, apple orchards, Christmas Tree Farms, and vineyards. There are many beautiful walks to take right out the door. While you may feel far away from it all, downtown is less than a ten minute drive, and door to door we are twenty minutes to the beaches and gorgeous coast line of Bodega Bay.

There are three main wine tasting routes nearby. For chardonnays and pinot noirs you can stay right in our appellation, the Russian River Valley, and Olivet Road to River Rd. Healdsburg is Dry Creek and Alexander Valley for merlots, zinfandels and cabernet sauvignon. All of these and more are nearby. Right in Sebastopol there is Iron Horse Vineyards, Lynmar, Balletto, Russian River Vineyards, Dutton Family Wines and many more.

You will need a car to get around as there is no public transportation in our rural neighborhood.

There is such a variety of things to do in our area. Sebastopol is famous for its award winning wineries, restaurants and antique shops. It also has an artsy bohemian feel, and many are dedicated to the slow food movement. Neighbors regularly trade their bounties with each other, such as milk, honey, eggs and veggies. There is also the beaches and cliffs of Bodega Bay (we provide beach chairs, towels, etc.), and great swimming and picnicking at the Russian River. You can hike through beautiful redwoods at Armstrong Woods. And of course visit countless wineries and gourmet restaurants. We can fill you in on our favorite s. While we have dogs, cats and farm animals on the property no animals are allowed in the cottage. Guests may not bring pets either. This ensures the cottage stays clean and allergen-free.

About Mary Heller

Hi, we are Mary and Bruce. I, Mary, was born and raised outside of Boston, then spent ten years in San Francisco where I went to law school and became a human rights lawyer. I then spent ten years in Marin. I moved to my farm in Sebastopol 12 years ago because I wanted to live and raise my children in the country, with lots of space around us. I picked Sebastopol specifically for its open attitude, great schools, rural charm and it's proximity to the beach and Russian River. When I brought my children, then toddlers, to see the place it was in August and the trees were dripping with apples. The kids ate several each, and the next morning my two-year old said, "Mommy, I want to go back to the apple house." And the rest was history. We still call it the Apple House, and are really happy here, eating from the trees and garden, riding our horses through the orchards, sharing meals with friends. Bruce, a native Californian and fellow farmer is part of our an now too, and together we created our guest cottage. We love the cottage and hope you will too.

"Quiet, lovely, welcoming country setting yet close to so many attractions"

  • 4 of 5

My family and friends spent a weekend this past September celebrating birthdays at her cottage, which is part her little bit of heaven minutes from Sebastopol "town". The setting is ideal. Her cottage was welcoming, clean, bright indoors and a spacious, restful yard, and lounging chairs, and lots of flowers outside. Yes, all of those physical plant characteristics are important but her attention to details impressed all of us. Mary Heller was the consummate hostess to us. For example, the linens/beds were oh, so, comfortable; the kitchen was equipped with all the things we had at home, e.g., sharp knives, coffee, cleaning supplies, etc.; apples, squash, tomatoes from her garden, eggs from her chickens, and a bottle of wine from the area were gifts as we entered. She greeted us warmly, too, introducing us to her husband, and to her horses and dogs, as well. Ever so gracious, available, and attentive yet not overly so.

Very comfortable, restful time and a great get away from the bustle of home. We're so grateful that we found the Heller's and stayed with them. And, if travellers are looking for a place like this, without hesitation, we would recommend staying with them. Hope Mary and Bruce have us back! Dr. Reg Louie

Peaceful Getaway in Beautiful Wine Country Settings

  • 4 of 5

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed staying in this clean and comfortable home. We were greeted the first night of our arrival with fresh flowers from the garden, apples, and even fresh eggs in the fridge. Mary made us feel quite at home and the place was beautifully set up with three spacious rooms, very comfy beds, and a beautiful outdoor garden with a place to BBQ which we unfortunately did not have the time to enjoy.

The home is definitely a retreat and one feels completely at peace surrounded by agriculture, horses, and plenty of place to roam. There's also a lot of wineries to see; plus Sebastapol was a fun town to visit, and the home is well located to Santa Rosa and Bodega bay. I highly recommend a stay here either to simply relax and unwind, or venture the wine-lands and the sea shores!
