About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + pune day bed, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Ili Ili Beach House is a truly unique location right on Pebble Beach. The smooth pebbles (known as ili ili in Hawaiian) create a soothing sound as the waves roll in and out. From the lanai or the garden you can watch the sunset and possibly see whales breech or dolphins play. Walk 50' and go swimming or snorkeling. Take off on a hike to an ancient cindercone or black sand beaches. Kayak to lava caves (we provide 3 kayaks for guests). Scuba divers love to beach dive off this beach as it is one of the best diving and snorkeling beaches on the island.

Pebble Beach is not easy to find in the guide books. It is off the beaten track and therefore almost private. You will be located right in the middle of your own beach. Our house has it's own private garden overlooking the ocean.

You will need lots of will-power to leave this house in its magical setting, but if so inclined this is a great location for exploring the Big Island. Visit the Place of Refuge, snorkel in Kealakekua Bay, surf Kahalu'u beach, do a night dive or snorkel with manta rays, drive 70 miles to the Volcanoes National Park or shop in Kailua only 25 miles away. So wake up, go for a swim and then hit the road.

High Speed Wireless access and Bluetooth sound system!! Bring your work and all your tunes and stay an extra week.

About Chris Arai

We are a family of 4 and we love to come to stay in our house. Our kids love coming here, even though they are teenagers and generally don't hang out with us.

Chris Arai purchased this house in 2006

Why Chris Arai chose Opihihale

The place seduced us! We were staying with friends in the neighborhood and noticed that this house was on the market. We were not in the market for a rental, but we could not resist owning a house right on the beach.

What makes this house unique

We find this place very relaxing. It truly is hard to leave and we find ourselves only slowly getting out to explore the rest of the island.

Every time we come back it feels so good to slip into the comfort and magic of this place. We can cook like we do at home, barbecue in the garden and eat on a picnic table overlooking the water.

We are slowly learning to catch fish from the kayak. Our goal is to land a mahi or yellow fin from the kayak one day!

We are located right on the beach. The Alii (King's) Trail goes right by the house for hiking along the coast. There are some interesting petroglyphs and ruins within 2 miles of the house.

Lovely home

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed your home - so much that I am tempted not to review it so I don't have to compete with other vacationers when I want to return. Everything is as shown and stated. We watched the super blue blood moon eclipse here, and that was an awesome night, with limited light pollution as it would have been in more populous areas. It is quiet and a bit far from activities, but if that is what you want, you will love it. Thanks again!

You will not find another spot that is dreamier than this unless you manage to book your own private island. I think I could have stayed at this house without leaving once and never tired of the quiet mornings, perfect sunsets and sheer beauty of the entire set up.

*Best spot on a quiet beach.

*Huge sandy yard to hang out in if you don't feel like walking the few steps to the beach.

*Perfect Lanai to relax and take in the views

*Tons of things you can use: Loungers, kayaks, miscellaneous beach gear

*Picture perfect coconut trees for just the right amount of shade. They shimmer in the breeze.

*Great set up with a big driveway, lots of paved areas, laundry room, dryer, clothes line, outside bathroom, etc. It's way more than what you can see in the pictures and is a smartly designed, well thought-out place.

*Super clean, super functional.

*Kitchen has about everything you need (other than a dishwasher)

*We saw turtles, whales, dolphins and even a shark from the house!

-It's a bit out of the way if you like more action or the convenience of restaurants and shopping (but still pretty close to Captain Cook and lots of great snorkeling)

-You have to take your own garbage to a transfer station, this was really hard for us because we left on a day the station nearby was closed and couldn't find one till we got back to Kona. It was super busy and we ended up late for our flight.

I've stayed at many vacation homes and there are few I'd want to stay at again. Ili Ili Beach house is one that I CAN'T WAIT to get back to. I can't tell you how many times we looked at each other and said, "It doesn't get better than this!"

Gorgeous view & great home

  • 5 of 5

Great home right on Pebbles Beach. We had perfect weather, beautiful sunsets, and clear skies at night revealing awesome stars. Snorkeling right from shore was good. lots of fish. Kayaks were a blast and the best snorkeling beaches in HI were a short drive away. The location felt a bit far from “the action” which is part of the charm but also a trade off because any meals you want “out” are a trek.

Lots of biting insects this time of year on the island.

Had nice meals at Sam Choy’s, Teshima and The fish and chips place up the road.

Recommend the Manta Ray snorkel and Akaka Falls Zipline.

We would love to come back to paradise.

House and amenities were perfect

Relax Relax Relax!!!

I remember reading one person somewhere say - "Don't hesitate! Book it!" And that is what we did. We were not disappointed! I will say that if you don't like isolation, quiet, or basically your own beach with great snorkeling, this is not the place for you. We happen to love all those things, and ended up staying at the house the entire trip and LOVED IT. Yes, the drive down to the house is very steep, not impossible, but be prepared to be in low gear and go 10 mph. We had plans to cook meals at the house for this trip, so we went shopping at Choice Market for the week -which was good since it is like 20+ minutes away. The kitchen is WELL stocked with supplies (pots, pans, bowls - you name it!), including condiments! Great set up! The stove and oven worked great. The bed was very comfortable, the lanai was AMAZING... we ate all of our meals out there (except in the dark - the nats would come out but that is ok.)

The sunsets were absolutely perfect - straight on from the house! What more can you ask for? There is a picnic table at the bottom set up that you can sit at drinking mai tai's and watch it go down. Perfect!

The pebble beach does take a little bit to get used to, but no sand in your stuff is nice! Make sure you have beach shoes and you will be just fine. And take the umbrella down too. I don't know why the blue book says the swimming can be treacherous - we had one time the waves got a little bit pushy, but that was because we went out right at the peak of high tide. We adjusted our timing and had no other issues. Like I mentioned, the snorkeling is great! Lots of fish to see. If you are not afraid of the ocean, definitely take the kayaks out! They are so smooth and easy to use!

We will be back next year for sure... Amazing quiet peaceful get away! So glad we found it!

Stunning view and relaxing location

  • 5 of 5

This house and location are gorgeous. How often do you get to stay right on the beach, with nothing blocking your view of the ocean. It was amazing sitting on the deck (Lanai) and watching the amazing sunsets, having a few drinks and listening to the waves as they washed over the pebbles. The house is well equipped, with everything you need, plus more.

The drive down to the house was incredible.Nerve wracking the first time but welcoming after that. We knew what waited at the bottom of the hill.

The only thing I hadn't really considered was the distance from town. 45 mins to an hour each way, made the decision to go in a real effort, to the point we only did it twice, so if you do want to explore Kona, I would stay in there a couple of nights at the beginning or end of your trip. Otherwise, the local area has a lot of beaches to explore.

Not sure when we will be back from Australia to stay again, but I wish we could! House swap maybe!!
