Overview

About the property

Self catering rental with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6

'Les Averries' is a 19th century 'longère' (local type of houses) renovated to a high standard and equipped with all the amenities of modern living. Situated in an east/west position with a terrace on either side of the house, you will enjoy having breakfast basking in the morning sunshine. The grounds are tended by a real garden lover and unusual plants are added every year for all to enjoy. The proximity of a glorious weeping willow offers cool shade and an ideal spot for lunch when the sun is at its zenith. The private heated pool is secured with automatic shutters and fitted with a shower and loungers. Solar panels were installed to provide you with constant hot water and to help our beloved planet in our modest way.

Set within the Loire nature park and a UNESCO world heritage site, the Loire valley is famed for its many châteaux, churches and abbeys. Bourgueil abbey dates back to the 10th C but the most famous, is without a doubt, Fontevraud where the Plantagenet kings, including Richard The Lion Heart, are buried. Within a radius of 20 miles, you will find a great array of châteaux amongst which are Chinon, Azay-le-Rideau, Ussé, Langeais and Saumur to name but a few. The Futuroscope in Poitiers is only 1 hour's drive away.

Bourgueil, along with Chinon, produces one of the finest red wines of the Loire. Bourgueil's market, under the age-old 'halles' is also one of those treasured moments that is a feast for the epicurian's palate.

Pool: Please note that from october 15th the pool is closed.

2 couples staying 5 nights. Good facilities and close to Supermarket and old town centre . Some good restaurants near, almost walking distance??. enjoyable place for a family too.

Internet was fantastic , and then a problem in the area, slow for the next 3 days

All in all a very nice part of France and LOTS to do.

A lovely week in a charming cottage.

  • 4 of 5

Les Averries is a charming cottage on the edge of the delightful town of Bourgueil. Five of us had an immensely enjoyable week long stay (wish it could have been two!). The cottage is comfortable, with all amenities, good wi-fi and well equipped with plenty of kitchenware. For 5 stars we’ would have expected the cottage to be sparkling clean and things like almost empty jars/packets of food removed. We are quite picky and this wasn'’t a big problem for us and the bottle of wine already chilled in the fridge was very welcome. The garden is absolutely perfect for outdoor living with lots of shady places to relax as well as the wonderful heated pool and deck area; perfect for sunbathing. All but one meal (slight rain) was eaten in the garden. The cottage is 10 minutes easy walk to the nearest restaurant, La Promenade (an experience!) and about 3 minutes drive to a big HyperU. The centre of Bourgueil, 15/20 mins walk, has quite a few shops including several excellent patisseries and a superb charcuterie. There are also 3 or 4 restaurants which looked good. We didn't try them as we were more than happy to eat at the cottage.

The owner, Michel, lives in an adjoining property but was not around very much. He was friendly and helpful and we spent a very enjoyable hour or so with a few bottles of wine in the garden with him and friends on our last evening. The Loire Valley is a beautiful and interesting place to visit and we would be very happy to stay at Les Averries again.

Owner's Response: True, I often leave pickles, mustard or ketchup jars even open in the fridge unless out of date which never happens as they have usually been bought the week before. I never imagined that could be cause for concern so thank you for telling me. I will make sure from now on that the fridge is totally empty save for a bottle of wine wich seems to be enjoyed by all.

L’Invitation au voyage

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

F. Claustres

A Perfect Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Although my review is but a year late, I wanted to provide Michel with all the beautiful pictures I took while staying in his lovely cottage with its divine garden.

Truly we felt blessed, and we were very sad to leave - I hope we can visit one day again. Beautifully situated, Les Averries was a perfect home base after a day of sightseeing, visiting the markets, lunching, wining, and visiting all the Loire Valley has to offer.

review August 2012

  • 4 of 5

We booked this because of the good review and the nice pictures. I felt it did not quite live up to its 5 star billing. The house was nice enough, with a great big dinning area and kitchen, a lovely lounge, the bedrooms were fine, the bathroom and shower room OK, the garden beautiful and the pool fantastic. For 5 stars I would expect the place to be gleaming on arrival perhaps with a bottle of wine in the fridge, but what we got was last weeks sausages and a fridge to clean out and the place was just a touch grubby around the edges. Not really bad but just needed a good deep clean, maybe it was just the end of the season.

We had a lovely holiday and really enjoyed our week here and if we were not expecting 5 stars we would not have been disappointed. The pool was fantastic and would keep kids happy for hours and adults come to that. The local town was good with lots of good French fair to be had. You are about 8 miles from a nuclear power station much to our amusement, but we decided not to visit this and about 1km from Super U. We visited lots of Chateaux, did a lot of cycling, there were some great trails you could pick up at the end of the road and they were almost flat, which was good for us. Wine tasting and drinking was obviously popular as was the cycle into town for bread in the morning. The owner was very pleasant and helpful and lived in the same complex as the house.
