About Peter Gair
We visited mid 2016 and stopped on the property, it was love at first sight and a few months later we purchased the actual site and the family moved in. Between the four of us we have we have a vast amount of experience in hospitality and customer service gained on 3 different continents and as we live on site you can be assured their is a always a family member around should you ever need us. Kayleigh the youngest of us (25yrs) is a fully qualified child care specialist and has various certificates, qualifications & diploma's relative to child care, so if you are traveling with a young one, you know they will be in safe hands should you require a sitter. We are eco friendly and are constantly looking at ways of operating that are less stressful on the planet, but without compromising our guests comforts.
Peter Gair purchased this Cabin in 2016
Why Peter Gair chose San Ignacio
Hummingbird Rest is unique in that it gives you the comforts of your own private self catering cabin, which includes your own bathroom with shower, your own fully equipped kitchen as well as your own verandah all ready for alfresco dining - All For A Price You Would Expect At A Back Packers Lodge. Whats more stay for a month of more and get a further discount, you will not find better at this price. * Should Hummingbird Rest not be available for the dates you have chosen please have a look at Sanpopo Cottage, also listed on VRBO, it is another cottage on the same property
What makes this Cabin unique
Your away from the crowds and surrounded by nature, we even have our own Iguana Feeding Stations where we feed the wild Iguana's that have chosen to share our gardens with us, at times up to 15 can come down to eat at one time, we also have bird and butterfly feeding stations. But we are still within walking distance of San Ignacio Town Centre and the famous Burns Avenue with it's bars and restaurants being only a fifteen minute walk (or US$2.50 by taxi) San Ignacio is the hub of commerce and tourism for western Belize, and together with its sister town – Santa Elena – make up the largest populated area in Cayo District with over 20,000 residents. Located along the banks of the Macal River, on a series of bluffs, San Ignacio and Santa Elena are at an elevation high enough to be noticeably cooler and less humid than the low-lying coastal plains. Due to it's higher elevation and lower humidity San Ignacio has few mosquitoes and none of the pesky sand flies found in the coastal regions San Ignacio visitors can actually walk to the impressive Maya site of Cahal Pech. Perched atop a hill just a mile from town, it rewards the 15-minute hike with a panoramic view of San Ignacio and the Belize River Valley. A museum and visitors center displays Maya artifacts, open 8 am. to 5 p.m. Bullet Tree Road leads to the 100 acre, archaeological reserve of El Pilar, which means “Water Basin” the site of an annual celebration of Maya culture each April. Hike or ride horseback to a pair of fascinating sinkholes. Resorts on the Benque Viejo Road, offers guided night jungle walks to observe nocturnal plants and animals. Maya guides demonstrate how sap is extracted from the sapodilla tree, source of chicle.

Great place to stay!
We really enjoyed our time at Hummingbird Rest! It was everything my wife and I wanted for our honeymoon. First, Peter and his family are all incredibly nice and have a wonderful property. They are always around if you need something, but very respectful of your privacy. The property is a great size and the home is tucked away amongst the garden. We were there for four nights and wish we could have stayed for more. There is a nice size kitchen area and a nice bedroom. The other wonderful thing is the porch area where you have a hammock, Adirondack chairs, and a little table and chair set. We spent a lot of time outside in both the morning and evening! The location is close to town- we walked in every day- or a short cab ride. Also, a lot of the tour companies will pick you up at the house and drop you off afterwards. In all, we loved our stay at the property and enjoyed San Ignacio! We would recommend this property - and any property that Peter and his family are involved with managing. Thanks so much!
Absolutely wonderful experience
Peter, Jenny and Kayleigh were fantastic. They were very welcoming and accommodating. They were very helpful in setting up tours. Everything was exceptional.

Beautiful property and wonderful host family
Iguana Roost is located close to town central (see the other reviews). The property is beautiful and appears to be much further out of town. We enjoyed the bird life (including a couple of black ducks), hummingbirds and other birds unfamiliar to us. If you require air conditioning then this place isn't for you but, if you want to stay in a clean, charming, rustic place close to town and a ruins site, then this place is exactly what you're looking for.
We chose Iguana Roost as our home away from home for the first 7 days of 15 in Belize. We knew we wanted to establish a base for exploring the central western part of Belize with our goal being to explore the ruins, national parks and reserves around the area.
In the process of exploring the country we discovered many fantastic people including the host family of this property. Peter, Jenny, Craig and Kayleigh are all recent transplants in search of a whole new life on terms of their own choosing where they have left the rat race to live the good life and spend more time with family and friends. You won't meet nicer people anywhere. We're very happy with our choice of Iguana Roost.
The whole host family are really kind and helpfull people. The place is amazing, nothing bad to say about it.
Thanks for choosing us for your stay in San Ignacio, and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
We were greeted upon arrival by the entire family, including Tootsie and Pudding, and immediately felt welcome and at home. Peter took us on a tour downtown to familiarize ourselves, and our adventures began. The cabin was spotless, and adequate for our needs. We especially enjoyed the deck where we were constantly entertained by a barrage of birds of all descriptions, lizards, scores of iguana and squirrels. Jenny popped by daily to ensure all was well. The location was great, we often walked into town and availed ourselves with the local taxi service for the return ride. The local fry jacks at the nearby shop were super, and the local Chinese food was awesome as well. There are so many local attractions nearby, as well an inexpensive motorcycle rental provided us with the means to explore further afield. Local car rentals were easily obtained to travel further afield. We enjoyed our stay with Peter, Jenny, Craig and Kailey, their warm friendships will be long remembered.
You were the most fabulous guests, we really enjoyed having you stay and the great chats we had. Both the dogs are missing you too.
You left the accommodation absolutely spotless, thank you, we hope to have you back again soon.

Lovely, Rustic Cottage Near San Ignacio
My husband and I had a perfectly comfortable stay at Iguana Roost, while visiting San Ignacio. The cabin was exactly as pictured online and possessed a great deal of rugged charm, making it the perfect base camp for our inland adventures in the Cayo District. It was close enough to town to be convenient, but far enough away to provide peace and quiet. And the little food shack across the street made the best breakfast fryjacks! Peter and his entire family were thoroughly charming and very helpful during our stay, provinding us with restaurant suggestions and assisting in booking tours. Even the family dog became a fast friend! We had a great time at Iguana Roost, and would recommend it to anyone thinking of staying in San Ignacio for a spell.
Glad you enjoyed your stay with us, it was lovely having you guys around.
Tootsie is already missing you and has been to check your cottage a few times looking for you.
Enjoy the rest of your vacation in Belize and we hope to welcome you back again soon.
Peter & Family
The property is located at 82 Bullet Tree Road. The entrance is located on Bullet Tree Road, approx. 100 yards on the left after the Puma Gas Station, the entrance has a white temple / pyramid shaped wall with the number 82 and a toucan painted on, that can be clearly seen from the road. Located just fifteen minute walk from San Ignacio town centre and the famous 'touristy' Burns Avenue, alternatively a twenty minute walk will have you at the Cahal Pech Maya Ruins dating back to at least 400bc. We are also mere 15-20 minute walk to the Iguana Sanctuary and the famous Xunantunich is less than 8 miles away ! The town of San Ignacio is an excellent base for day trips, however, the river with surrounding countryside, with hills, farms, streams and forest are equally inviting , and there are many ways to enjoy them - on foot, by boat or even on horseback
