About Lionel Kaufman
We are retired teachers. Lionel retired as a full professor at the University of Puerto Rico. Sally retired as an English as a Second Language teacher at Buchanan Army Base in San Juan, Puerto Rico. We are both English-Spanish bilinguals. Lionel was born in New York and Sally is from Cleveland, Ohio. Lionel likes tennis and boating. Sally like walking the beach and Yoga. We lived in Puerto Rico for over 34 years and now reside in Sarasota, Florida. But we travel to the island frequently. People calls us “Gringo Ricans” since Puerto Rico has been so much a part of our lives.
Lionel Kaufman purchased this Apartment in 1985
Why Lionel Kaufman chose Isla Verde
We bought this property back in the middle 1980's, not only as an investment, but also to have access to the beach since our house in Rio Piedras was several miles from the coast. We are one of the original owners in the building, and even today, some 30 years late, we pride ourselves in maintaining one of the most updated apartment in the building.
What makes this Apartment unique
You can't beat the location--on the beach, located between two major Hotels and Casinos, the El San Juan Hotel and Casino and the Ritz Carlton Hotel and Casino. This is a condo-hotel (1/3 hotel, 1/3 time share, and 1/3 private owned apartment). It is unique in that you experience residing in a privately owned unit while you can enjoy all the amenities of a major hotel. And one other advantage: It is the most secure location of any condominium in San Juan.

Excellent Stay - But
The property itself was great. Communication with the property owner was not lacking in any way. The view was pleasant. The hotel itself had exceptional amenities.
So why did I say "But" here's the reason why. This would have been a perfect experience; however, I feel that some attention should be given to the interior of the unit. Updating the unit itself would make the stay more pleasant. Please be aware that there is quite a bit of humidity in Puerto Rico and it takes a toll in the unit smelling musky.
I would still recommend this unit and owner as I had a wonderful experience.
Loved the location the beach was the best. Sondra's food cart a must have. The weather was all Sun all day long!
Room was clean had a good ocean view. Only complaint is not having house cleaning. Had to wash our own stuff. Could have had house cleaning for a fee. Hotel and pool was great. Owners easy to work with. Thank you.
We're happy that the guest had a good stay. As for the mention of the daily cleaning, we explain in our instruction sheet that daily cleaning can be provided for a fee either by our cleaning service or by the hotel, but the reason that our rates are only half of those of the hotel is because we do not have on-site cleaning and maintenance services.
We loved Puerto Rico, our location and the facility but we were disappointed with the room.
The facility was very nice with the pool and access to the beach. It was also nice to have parking provided. The owner was easy to communicate with and always responded.
The room needed some tender loving care! It needs to be updated and thoroughly cleaned. The floor was very sticky and dirty; the toaster only worked if you held it down; the refrigerator shelves were not clean-everything I put on the shelves stuck there. We were very disappointed with the lack of cleanliness.
This guest failed to reveal the real reason for his discontent. It wasn't the cleaning. He arrived in the middle of the night and was unable to open the combination lock on the door. He claimed we didn't give him the correct combination, even though we texted him the combination on the very day of his arrival. The text was on his phone. He didn't mention this in his review, but obviously this put him in a bad mood and he tried to find other reasons to vent his anger.
Excellent place to stay!!!
First I’d like to thank Mr. Lionel Kaufman for his outstanding attention to my needs and for being such a great host. Clear and precise instructions regarding arrival, checkin and the apartment amenities. The apartment is exactly as described and it is fully equipped with everything you need to have a pleasant stay. All you need to buy is food and drinks in the event you want to prepare your own meals.
Since the balcony of the unit is located on the east side, there’s a very nice kool breeze that comes in which is more than enough to keep the A/C off.
The ESJ lobby has been renovated and it looks wonderful. Access to the beach and pool is just steps away.
I highly recommend staying at Lionel’s place. You won’t be disappointed.
Me encanto la pasamos muy bien. Tremendas facilidades en el hotel y areas adyacentes.

Isla Verde, along with Condado, is one of the main tourist areas in the metropolitan area of Puerto Rico, hosting various restaurants, hotels, casinos and discothèques. Isla Verde means "Green Island," but it's the lovely crescent of beachfront that commands center stage, and it is here that you'll find some of the island's hippest, hottest, and most exclusive hotels. Of course, there's the beach. Two of them, actually: Isla Verde Beach and Carolina Beach, a balneario, or "public beach," with ample parking and amenities. Here are some other activities to put on your list: casinos, diving, water sports, and cock fighting. If you are driving, the nearest attractions are El Yunque (the rain forest), Luquillo Beach, Old San Juan, Plaza Las Americas, and the Camuy Caves. If you want to drive across the island, our favorite towns are La Parquera, Boquerón, and Rincon.
