Pretty much perfect
Just what I wanted and better. This place and spot is awesome.
We have stayed here before, and will probably again. We love the view and the area. This time the stay was under a different owner. The new owner has cleared the lawn which was full of trees. This was great as we had room for a fire every night closer to the house. The only drawback is that I think it has attracted the geese, so there was lots of poop, that does unfortunately get dragged into the house. The dock near the newly built boathouse is great as we did some fishing from it. The weather was pretty good the entire week. We had a family of seven, which also makes the showering tight. There is just one shower. We were aware of this going in, and it isn't a big deal for us. We had a great week, as there is a lot to do in the area. Thank you.
Perfect Waterfront ADK Camp
Kiwassa Camp is the quintessential ADK camp set in a perfect location.
The main camp is over 110 year old and provides the perfect backdrop to kick-back in the Adirondacks. Each of the 5 bedrooms are simple and comfortable. The main living rooms and dining room were spacious for our group and the kitchen, while somewhat rustic, has everything you need. The new Weber Grill was perfect our cooking needs, and the screened in porch was perfect for relaxing. Full linens and towels were plentiful. The 1 and half bathroom set up is unique, but adequate. The owners and caretaker were very attentive to our needs.
The property is nice and flat with plenty of room to play and the waterfront is the perfect place to launch adventures into Kiwassa Lake. The entire water line is a sandy beach for swimming and Kiwassa Lake is a beautiful deep ADK lake with great fishing and boating. I have been to this region every year since the 80's and never ventured into Kiwassa Lake. The view of Ampersand mountain is amazing. It is a hidden gem and it is 5 minutes from the center of town. Super convenient.
This is an authentic ADK camp and the perfect setting to unwind and disconnect (Even though they do have WiFi)
Enchanting house in the heart of Adirondacks
Our family reunion for Canadian Thanksgiving weekend at the house was great. We were lucky to have fantastic weather and the autumn colors were at its best. The house has a very nice ambiance and it is located in the forest in a quiet, private area. It is also very close to the lake with spectacular view of the mountains on the horizon. We enjoyed canoeing and even swimming in the lake. The Saranac Lake and several hiking trails are not far away. We visited the town on Saturday morning and we hiked the Haystack Mountain on Sunday. Fire pit near the lake was fun in the evenings. The owner was available when we needed his help with little things like heating in the bathroom or blown fuse. The house has no Wi-Fi, television or telephone service, but we found this to be an asset! Weekend without technology was just exactly what we needed! We will keep this house in mind for the future family events.
DO NOT RENT FROM THIS OWNER OR PROPERTY MANAGER
The house is a great example of a classic ADK camp with beautiful views and lake access. Cell coverage is spotty, but we saw this as part of getting away.
The owner/property manager, however, cannot be trusted. When we arrived, the property manager informed us that there had been a problem with the water well. They had just replaced it, and he was collecting the first samples to test if it was potable. Without warning, the water in the house was only safe for bathing and flushing the toilet. Since we were traveling with toddlers who inevitably drink water while showering, bathing was out of the question. He returned on the 2nd day to take another sample because he had not properly tested for bacteria. On the 4th day, we had to call the manager to request the results. He told us the water was safe for drinking. Thankfully, we have experience with water wells and know that typically the water has to be tested again in 48 hrs to ensure safety. When we asked him if he intended to recheck, he became defensive and said it was unnecessary. Concerned that the next renter could walk into a house with unsafe water, we contacted the county code enforcement officer, who informed us that per code water is unsafe until a 2nd sample is collected. The code enforcement officer requested a 2nd sample, which had not been done when we left.
Contaminated water is dangerous. The E. Coli-contaminated water at the 1999 Washington County Fair caused multiple hospitalizations and 2 deaths. If I wanted to stay where I couldn’t trust the water and had to bathe in the lake, I would have gone camping and saved a lot of money.
It is the responsibility of the homeowner/property manager to ensure the property is safe. If we had not contacted the county code enforcement officer then the water could have been dangerous to the next renters. It is also their responsibility to notify renters before they arrive if the house will not be as advertised, especially for major things like water, electricity or heat. We should have been notified and given the chance to cancel with full refund. That didn’t happen. When we called the owner to ask for a partial refund, he denied any refund.
This is an old house and things break in old houses. When you pay for a rental, you expect to find it as advertised or be notified beforehand if something changes. Above all, you should expect the owner to do everything he can to keep the property safe. You cannot trust the owner/property manager to do this.
This classic Adirondack home is a great get away and has been appreciated by many renters for years. The water quality was safe before this party arrived and it's safe after their departure. We're utilizing the same well that's been in operation for many years and, as proven by the 2 water quality reports produced for this overly cautious renter (be pleased to provide upon request to any interested party), remains safe today - the filter simply needed to be cleaned. This renter complained about the lack of internet service and cell phone coverage, both of which were not posted on the VRBO page as inclusive, so this should not be a surprise - these services are spotty in the ADK's in general. Unfortunately, this is a classic case of someone with motivation to contrive a complaint that will force the owner to provide an unwarranted refund. Having been a reputable business leader my entire career, I have never once neglected responsibility, and would gladly refund the entire fee if justified. This renter got exactly what was promoted on VRBO, which is a safe, clean, and spacious home with an exceptional view & lake access, which many others have enjoyed & appreciated for many years.
Our family vacation at Camp Kiwassa was all we could have hoped for: perfect weather and lots of fun
My husband and I rented this charming , old ADK camp to host a family vacation for our grown children and grandchildren. We were looking for a place we could get away from distractions (screens and devices) and enjoy the outdoors and each other. We wanted lakefront with good swimming for kids, a dock for our boat and kayaks, a flat lawn area for play, lots of room in the house for sleeping, being together and also places to get away from everyone. We also wanted to be able to cook meals and eat together comfortably. Camp Kiwassa met all these expectations and more. It was clean, well equipped and we all easily settled in and enjoyed ourselves. It was safe for the kids who could be very independent in the shallow swimming beach and dock area. The young adults soon forgot about their phones and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings, the wildlife, kayaking and conversation and drinks on the dock. Everyone enjoyed the big screened porch and breathtaking views of the lake from all the windows in the camp. Some of our most memorable activities included: observing loon family teaching babies to dive and fish; early morning kayaking on mirror smooth lake; family storytelling around the campfire; numerous games of Life in the comfy living room; the laughter of the grandkids as they enjoyed tubing, kayaking, and rough and tumble play on the lawn. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen old-fashioned but easy to cook in and prepare food for a large group. The only negative was the well water's iron content. We didn't mind using spring water and appreciated the bottles that owners provided and we did bring our own jugs that we refilled in town a few times. We only showered with the tap water and it was so concentrated with iron that our skin would have an orange tint and we had to be careful of getting it on our white clothes. We really want to rent this lovely camp next year and hope the well water situation is improved, though it did not detract from our enjoyment of this charming property and the cherished family memories that we made.
Connie, so glad to hear that you and your guests enjoyed the Lake Kiwassa cabin and pleased that you wish to return next year. We apologize for the temporary issue with the iron content in the water, which has been completely resolved. Water is crystal clear and tested safe. See you next year
