About Mark Just

My wife and I purchased this property in the late 1980's. We loved being outdoors going boating, fishing, and hunting. I began building The Lodge in the early 1990's. We have used the property for family vacations and a place to stay on the weekends. As our children grew older we began using the cabin less and less. We now enjoy allowing other families to create some of the same memories I have created with my family.

Mark Just purchased this cabin in 1987

Good Place To Stay

  • 4 of 5

Really enjoyed our family get together at The Lodge. Plenty of room & comfort for a group of 12 people. The facility was nice & clean and inviting upon arrival. Would have like to have been able to have an earlier check-in time, even making it two hours earlier at 300pm instead of 500pm would have been great. But not enough of an issue to keep us from considering renting the property in the future. No internet access and cell phone reception was very poor, if any at all. But that was ok, as it made us revert to an earlier time when technology didn't rule our lives and we enjoyed the company of family members talking, playing games & having a great time. It was nice being away from the hustle & bustle of everyday modern life. Thanks for everything, we definitely enjoyed our stay.

Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this cabin twice now, and both times have had a great time. It's very clean, spacious and fully furnished as stated in listing. The covered back deck area is wonderful for sitting outside in the evening enjoying the scenery. I would highly recommend this cabin to any of my friends.

Vacation disrupted by bedbug issue

  • 1 of 5

Our stay (9/8/17 to 9/10/17) was going well until bedbugs were discovered in this rental. We brought the matter to the owner's attention but have not come to a satisfactory resolution as of today. We have not seen confirmation from the pest control company that they did or did not find bugs upon inspection (the owner states no bugs were found by the pest control company but that the cabin was treated...why it would have been treated if no bugs were discovered is hard to understand). We did discover bedbugs in the cabin during our stay, had not previously come into contact with this type of bug but were able to identify them via a website. The bugs were left in a jar for the pest control folks to ID. We had to leave the cabin late Saturday evening to obtain garbage bags at the Walmart 20+ miles away in order to bag up our possessions to try to avoid getting the bugs into our vehicles on our return trip home. Some of our items we disposed of there rather than take the risk of bringing the pests into our homes and having to go to the trouble and expense of trying to have them eradicated, which from all we've heard is expensive and difficult--and there are three households potentially affected as two of our daughters and their families were with us. We have have requested consideration from the owner regarding refund of the rental fee but that doesn't appear to be forthcoming; we are waiting for our security deposit to be returned, as well. The owner's attitude seems to suggest that we brought the bugs with us, which is certainly not the case, that bed bugs are apparently very commonplace in public places these days and are no big deal. This is a very big deal to us and, although our family tried our best to decontaminate our items before entering our homes upon our return, there is a possibility that we could end up with infestations in our homes. I feel a certain level of responsibility to potential future tenants to make them aware of the situation we walked into unknowingly. We have rented through VRBO for almost 20 years and have not had one negative experience, until now. I am very disappointed in the lack of concern shown by this owner toward our situation as well as for his future tenants, as this unit is booked fairly solid through October.

Owner's Response: 1. Time of compliant, 11 hrs from checkout. 2. Previous guest had no complaints, nor did my family. 3. My awareness of bed bugs was from a friend that travels on regular bases for his work. Airplanes are high on list, (I was told one of these guest came from Iowa) 4. I have Terminix do inspections, and do pest preventive treatment. Last inspection by a professional exterminator showed no problems. Nor did the inspection he made the day after their departure, nor during the walk through done 4 days later for dead pest after his preventive treatment. (I was told this by phone) I have requested something in writing from Terminix so far only received an email addressing how travelers should protect themselves during travel. (Which I will be happy to forward to any future guest.) So they will be less likely to bring this problem to my family’s cabin. 5. Guest said in email they had just returned from a nearby water park. Which has a very large number of patrons which stay in nearby hotels? That also stores their dry clothing in public lockers. (I’ll let you come up with your own possibilities?) But a professional told me… 6. These guest only found these bugs down stairs, not in the bedroom areas. 2 on husbands shirt 1 on towel. (Were these items at water park? I’m not sure.) 7. Security deposit will be returned by VRBO per the normal process, sense I have not contacted VRBO to delay it, as there were no damages other than possibly this review? How does VRBO have any control over my cabin or the guest actions? They are an advertising/booking site. 8. I recommend all travelers research and make themselves aware of bedbugs, and how to inspect places you stay for them. Take preventive measures. 9. As for future tenants. I will gladly refund you the portion of your fee that I have received for your stay. Prior to your stay, or at check in after your inspection of the cabin. Not 12 hrs prior to your check out. 10. I do appreciate these guests putting their things in side bags as this is likely why there were no bugs found in my cabin, they may have been kept inside the bags. Thank You 11. My concern is Great! As my family and friends use the cabin regularly. 12. I wish these guests the best of luck in their future travels, and am truly sorry for this issue. But I feel I have made every effort known available to me to keep my cabin free of pest. Short of discontinuing allowing the public to use it, this may be my next step. Owner Mark

A June vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family and I really enjoyed our stay at The Lodge. It was hot and muggy during our stay but the A/C in the cabin was fantastic! Very, very comfortable. The beds were very nice and comfortable as well. Overall, a nice, clean place. Some people have written some bad things about the bugs....well, there were bugs outside...but, you are inthe woods!!! We didnt have any trouble with bugs inside at all. Like I said, very clean and super comfortable. A nice mix of rustic with modern...for the most part...I mean, after all, it is a cabin/retreat...not a 5 star Hilton!! As long as you don't expect the Hilton, you will be more than satisfied....believe me when I say it was way nicer than we expected to get!!! I would say that if I had to find any fault at all with what we were promised and what we got was the fact that the ad says free firewood. You only get a small bag of cut wood to start a fire with.....would last about an hour and thats it. Other than that...were were seriously impressed...So much so that we would have no problem whatsoever booking it again. Very relaxing and room for lots and lots of people!!!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review! We love to hear feedback from our guest and are glad you all enjoyed your stay. We regret we had to stop the supply of free firewood, due to cost we can only allow the first one for free, and then extra is available onsite for a small fee. Once, again we are glad you stayed with us and hope you come back and see us!

Spring fishing/fall hunting

  • 5 of 5

I've used this cabin a 2 occasions, each time has been an enjoyable experience. A couple minutes away from boat ramp for spring crappie/bass fishing and public hunting locations all around in the fall. The cabin has a rustic feel that makes it easy to relax.

Great time away

  • 5 of 5

The Lodge is a very nice place to go to get away. Remember the map to get there.. The lodge is nicely finished in side and the 5 kids had a wonderful time in and around the place. Nice LARGE table on the back deck is a wonderful place to sit in the morning and have a cup of coffee and listen to the birds.

Inside the kitchen has everything you need. well except food. Remember to bring that with you. The closes grocery is 20 minutes away in English. But if you remember everything (i didn't) there are two large fridges to hold everything. Nice stove and really nice breakfast bar to eat at.

More beds than you know what to do with and two nice areas to sit inside and talk. A nice place upstairs to sit and relax and another place down stairs with several comfortable places to sit.

This is a good place for the summer and looks to be a nice hunting lodge in the cooler months. There is a very nice wood burning stove on a two story stone hearth.

This on a point in the lake, there is a nice boat ramp just around the corner.

If you do not own a boat there is a nice marina to rent one which is what we did and had a great day on the lake.

We are looking to try and go back again next year.
