If you like ants....
This house was old but the view of the lake was great. Definitely not worth the money though! As soon as we starting to unpack we noticed ants everywhere... we started cleaning with the ant soap that was by the sink and sprayed but they kept multiplying!
If you like hanging on the deck, eating, sleeping, using the bathroom, showering or bathing with ANTS then this is the place for you!!
Jim’s Place is my permanent home meaning, I live in it full time with two other people when it is not rented. The cabin is under contract with Terminix at $400/year. I would invite anyone to come any time to see that the swarms of ants mentioned in this review do not exist. Do we who live here see any ants inside? Sure an occasional few might be here and there. Which is why we leave the special and instantly effective ant spray out and available for use especially where food may have be left out. This guest sounds as if she has a phobia about ants and she certainly reported more that what she saw. I have never experienced ants in my bed and in other places only rarely.
The only correct statement in her review is that Jim’s Place is old. Yes it is, being built in 1950, and I have owned it since 1970, maybe being old is why it has one of the best views on Pickwick Lake.
I am sorry that a few ants freaked her out. She never complained during her visit and left it in a very clean state, which I appreciate. We got back Sunday afternoon and in the three days since we have been back we have not seen a single ant.

Not Worth the $ per night
Older place was expected, but must have a differing definition on cleaning that is more towards just straightening up before you arrive.
Mainly, the lack of smoke detectors in the home shows a disregard to the safety of the renters staying there.
Our stay here was nothing short of sub-par. We had to spend the large majority of the first day cleaning in order to make the place livable. The bathrooms were disgusting; feces all over the toilets, mold and bugs in the tubs. The kitchen was absolutely disgusting- the fridge was left with 1-2 year old food in it. The sheets had not been laundered, so we had to sleep on top of the sheets (like a rent by the hour hotel). The house had a musty smell as well; a lot like cat urine. It was terrible. It’s very sad when you actually leave a place 100 times cleaner than when you arrived. We were really looking forward to a trip away... since vacations are sparse for us, but this place was a complete let down and a huge black cloud over our weekend. HORRIBLE AND NEVER AGAIN!!!
This renter is obviously upset but this review is over the top and uncalled for as Jim’s Place has been rented many times without any such negative comments and the place is not and was not as she described. As for the sheets, no they are not pressed and ironed. But they are washed and dried as you do in your own home.
Perfect view of lake! House is set up great with plenty of space to hangout both indoor and outdoor
Some niceties, but needs cleaning and better AC
The owner was very nice and professional. The house was well stocked and we had everything that we needed. A very thorough deep cleaning is a must for this property, though. The guest bathroom was not clean - a wet washrag was in the tub when we got there. :(
Window units keep the main living area cold, but does not circulate to the bedrooms - we were uncomfortable. There is a major ant infestation that needs to be addressed. A dispose-all or dishwasher would be a wise investment.
The decor is nice and has some charm. IMHO a week or two of serious cleaning, a professional fresh coat of paint, and a few minor upgrades would make this a charming place to stay.
Jeff, thank you for your comments, which will help me make Jim's Place better for the next renter and hopefully for you again in the future. Yes, the smaller original bathroom had not been cleaned. My cleaners thought it was no longer used and skipped it. That problem won't occur again. I have been holding off on replacing my old portable dishwasher that died after 20 years because I plan a full kitchen remodel in the near future. I have also been told that disposals and septic tanks don't work well together, but will check on that as I have a small septic tank for just the kitchen wast water that has operated without any problem, maintenance or concern since it was installed 47 years ago. The ants are usually the result of food being left out or dirty dishes in the sink. Yes, a dishwasher would help with that. As to the A/C in the bedrooms, I always sleep with the bedroom doors open, but realize that in some situations people might not want to do that. I am aging to look into putting small window units in both bathrooms which should solve that problem if the bathroom doors are left open. We made lots of improvements from last year and your comments will help us to improve. We have, however, not been able to find the missing dinning table chair, do for the time being there will be only 7 instead of 8 dinning table chairs. If any of your guests know about its whereabouts let me know. I have owned this great location and have use it extensively for the past 47 years. It was originally built in 1950 as were all of the 20 original cabins on this point with that $1,000,000 view of the lake. Your review is appreacited as we work to make continual improvements.
