About Barbara Trolsen
Engage in southern hospitality with Rick and Barbara Trolsen in their historic Old Algier’s Pointe 1930’s craftsman cottage. Musicians will enjoy the sitting in with Rick Trolsen, trombonist/pianist/composer during his weekly Friday night gig at Old Point Bar, only a few blocks away. Rick, a gifted musician is usually performing nightly or daily. Algiers continues to be a home and haven for musicians, writers, artist, and snowbirds. A state of the art recording studio can be reserved in the neighborhood. Rick enjoys mentoring at jazz camp or hosting up-and-coming international proteges. Barbara’s creativity and candid knowledge of the New Orleans’ scene will keep you coming back. This amazing couple met and fell in love while working on the Mississippi Queen Riverboat sailing up and down the river from New Orleans to St. Paul Minnesota and have celebrated over thirty years of bliss traveling the world of music and friends and residing in New Orleans. Catch the amazing sunset, New Orleans skyline and the mighty Mississippi River with the locals on the levy directly across from Old Point Bar. You may borrow our bikes and enjoy miles of paths along the levy or walk to the historic Hubbell library. Ride the ferry over to New Orleans to the Canal Street outlet mall, Aquarium, Insectarium, Harrah’s Casino or take the streetcar to Café du Monde in the French Quarter or uptown to the Audubon Zoo, passing through the famous Garden District on St. Charles. Seldom do we endure any winter; the fire pit, porch and two decks are a charming retreat or opportunity to spur your creativity. With Rick and Barbara you will always capture a little something extra and his repertoire is much like gumbo, a blend of Western European, African, Caribbean and North and South Americas’ influences. Contact Rick or Barb to secure your vacation rental and you are guaranteed lagniappe and a gumbo of local cuisine, music, and art.

Why Barbara Trolsen chose Algiers Point
We've always dreamt of living in a quaint neighborhood just outside a big city. Well, our dream came true when we found Old Algiers. Young and old alike, family friendly, as well as plenty of "watering spots" in the neighborhood, and a venue that has music 5 night's a week, close to a recording studio with easy access to the French Quarter via a Ferry ride across the "Big Muddy Mississippi River".... Idyllic
What makes this Apartment unique
The people in our neighborhood are about as friendly as you would ever imagine! To walk up on the levy is a magical experience, giving you a picturesque view of Downtown New Orleans, the Riverboats, Cruise Ships and Freighters.

First the residence.....comfortable beds, well equipped kitchen and nice outdoor space street side or private back patio. Secondly, the location is within easy walking distance to the ferry dock and local restaurants/bars. Last but not least is the owners Barbara and Rick. They are as others have mentioned will be part of the reason we will return to "Music Lovers". Thanks for a wonderful week!
Awesome Place and Awesome People!!
We recently took a cruise that sailed out of New Orleans and wanted to stay a few in the city when we returned. I looked an several places to rent and read all of the reviews and the one thing that really stood out was all of the comments on how great the owners of this house were, and I am here to say that they were all correct!! Rick and Barbara are awesome, they are very gracious host and go all out to make you feel welcome and comfortable. The house is a beautiful older home and was very clean and comfortable and in a great neighborhood. The Algiers Point area is really cool, we really loved being able to go out and walk through the neighborhood and see all of the beautiful old homes and buildings in the area. There is a really nice park across the street and a coffee shop at the end of the block that serves some of the best breakfast that you will ever eat. Rick is an amazing Jazz musician and played at a local bar in the neighborhood one of the nights that we were there, it was a really cool located by the levy, we were only able to get by and hear a couple of songs, but I really wish we would have spent more time there that night. Rick and Barbara are great ambassadors for the city of New Orleans, you only have to speak to them for a few minutes and you soon realize the love that they have for the city. We loved visiting New Orleans and the experience that you get by staying at Rick and Barbara's place only enhances your visit. Do yourself a favor and bring comfortable walking shoes and go walk the neighborhood in Algiers Point, go have a Dixie Beer at the Old Point Bar, listen to Rick place some great Jazz and let the good times roll!!
The house is down right adorable! The back yard was magical with the lighting! Barb & Rick were the perfect hosts. Barb took us on a driving tour of Algiers Point and told us a lot fun facts about the area. We were totally happy with the location a quick walk to the ferry for the French Quarter. We really enjoyed the music at the Old Algiers Point Bar. We would love to stay again on a return trip!
Thank you Barb & Rick!
Could not ask for a better location or hosts!!!
What an amazing place to stay. Best hosts we have ever stayed with.
Barbara and Rick are amazing people. We plan to stay here again. Barbara showed us around and made sure we could find places to eat. The back patio was heaven, it was great having a beautiful place to relax. You always hear about "southern hospitality" well we got to experience it first hand here.
Thank you so much for everything.
Fabulous location + inviting home makes for great trip!
I've never before felt compelled to write a review of a property, but this is a definite exception. It was EXACTLY what we look for when we travel - quiet place to sleep, easy access to all the touristy stuff, safe, walkable, great breakfast/coffee joint nearby, beautiful neighborhood, and helpful hosts, and loads of local charm!
My husband and I were traveling with our two children, ages 10 and 12, on a road trip from NC. The kids each got their own room and bed (the foldouts, which included soft toppers to make them super comfy), which keeps everyone happy on a multi-day trip. We ate breakfast every morning at the little café right across the way, though we could have easily whipped up something in the kitchen. None of us are bathroom hogs, so the single bathroom served us just fine.
Getting over the river was easy with a multi-day ferry pass (there's an app you can download for that so you don't have to keep up with money or paper tickets). The walk to the ferry was quick and easy, though Barbara's tip to walk in the street at night was right-on due to uneven sidewalks. Even walking home in the dark, it was completely safe and I'm pretty sure we never met a car on the road. While on the subject of transportation, parking was a breeze.
One thing we were pleasantly surprised by - most older houses have very low doorways, which is a pain for my 6'2" husband. This one didn't! No complaints about having to duck!
The back yard was magical. The children found great spots to read there. Later in the evening, we visited with Barbara, Rick, and their friends on the back porch.
Barbara could not have been more accommodating and inviting. One of her best ideas is to provide different types of pillows for the master bed - whatever type you want is there. That was a nice touch!
We happened to be there for Easter and were able to walk to a local church that Sunday morning. My daughter said she wished we could walk to church every morning :-) Speaking of the church, Algiers Methodist was incredibly relaxed and welcoming.
I feel like I'm rambling, but am trying to cover all the important stuff. Basically, you can't do better than this place/location/cost/vibe.
