The perfect place

  • 5 of 5

It’s a rustic cabin with everything needed for an enjoyable stay. Our family has two boys ages 9 and 14 and they loved exploring the surrounding area and the river stream running through the yard. It’s quiet and relatively secluded and was more than we were hoping for. We will definitely return!

Great rustic property but needs a little TLC

  • 4 of 5

The location of this cabin is great. The river bends right around the front of the property and there is a great fire pit to sit around and enjoy the river and scenery. The fishing out the front door was ok. The river runs pretty fast thru this section so we had to hike up and down the river to find some fish. Overall the outdoor areas were very relaxing and enjoyable. The inside of the cabin is very rustic. The lighting is pretty poor in the evenings but it makes it very cozy. The kitchen is small but has what you need to do some basic cooking. The cabin looks like it was added on to or remodeled at some point and the floors are a little sloped in areas. Also the floors creak pretty loudly in areas which makes it hard to be quiet while others are sleeping. The heating system is adequate although some of the baseboard heaters appeared to be inoperable. The fireplace has a nice insert but was also inoperable although you can still use it for conventional fire. We did have trouble keeping the fire going though as it felt like it would not draw enough air and we could not find a flue adjustment. Overall we stayed pretty warm even on 20 degree mornings. The bathroom near the kitchen was ok but needs some TLC. The shower was moldy and not very inviting. Nobody in our group used this shower. The electrical plugs are worn out and loose in many places. Sometimes when you plugged something in it would fall right back out. The cabin also needed a deep cleaning. Some of the logs were very dusty and there were large spider webs up around the deer mounts. Overall the cabin was nice but it was a little pricey for the shape it was in. The wifi and satellite TV worked without a hitch. It was nice to have those amenities on cold nights.

The driveway entrance was pretty steep and even in a small SUV we had to approach at just the right angle to avoid bottoming out. The main road looked like it had been graded so the drive just needed a little smoothing at the tie-in.

Overall this property was enjoyable but I personally would not stay here with more than 5 or 6 people and I probably would not stay here again at the asking price of over $200 a night. Still gave it 4 stars due to location and overall condition. I would really rate this at 3.5 stars.

Exactly what we were wanting

  • 5 of 5

We pulled up to Bear Bait and were immediately in love. The setting is beautiful... my kids and husband fished and waded in the river and I hung up my hammock and read next to the river. We took a whole day to just relax and enjoy the cabin.

Pleasantly surprised to have Wi-Fi, which after a few days of camping and limited cell service everywhere allowed us to get a little bit of work done. Cabin was clean and well stocked with just about everything we would need. The kids loved sitting around the fire pit, and having room to run around. The ridiculously large water heater meant we could take long showers after coming in from 3 days of camping, which was amazing.

The only thing I found myself wanting was some chairs on the front porch to sit in. We didn't bring camping chairs with us, so all we had were the wooden benches at the picnic table and fire pit.

We left hoping we get to come back someday. We loved Red River and this cabin.

Great location on the river!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here in July with 4 adults and 2 kids. Great location in Valley of the Pines with fishing right out the front door. Cabin had plenty of room & we were able to use grill to eat out by the river each day. Fire pit is in a great spot as well, kids loved it! No problems with anything in the cabin, everything worked well. Would definitely stay here again!
