About Richard Howell
We met each other for the first time in 2002 in Germany, where Mr. Howell was stationed as a soldier. Finally, after 11 years we got married - the best decision of our lives... Our boy is 14 years old, loves to play the guitar and has a military future - and to our surprise he has the the same big love for The Beatles like his mother. His goal is to be a psychiatrist one day, like his grandfather or maybe a lawyer like his uncle... Mrs. Howell is German, was studying International Relations, is into reading, classical music, The Beatles ;-), she loves animals and the nature. Mr. Howell comes from Alabama, studied History after he went to the army, is a big Vivaldi-Fan, also loves the nature and we all found out, not too long ago, that we enjoy road trips. In the last 10 months we have visited 26 states. We want our guests to relax, we will be there for them if they need us, and we want to give people the one thing they all deserve - harmony!
Richard Howell purchased this Cabin in 2015
Why Richard Howell chose Hope
The idea behind finding the right property in the US, was to find something as close in resemblance to the Bavarian Alps, but. . . American. After combing the entire Northwest, we were able to develop and eventually shorten the list of possibilities. Coupled with the massive size of Lake Pend Oreille and a nearby ski resort, and being out in raw nature, yet, not hours away from civilization, we decided that this area was perfect. This cabin was originally intended to be our permanent residence, however, we also found another nearby property that had its own pros and cons. The decision between the two was so difficult to make, we decided to buy both! Here, bald eagles can be seen daily. The wildlife is so wild, in fact, that many of the animals haven't learned to fear humans yet. Wild turkeys are seen by the roads and in our yards very frequently. Deer do not run away unless you approach them quickly. Bears do live here as well, however we have averaged about 2 sightings per year on this mountain. At the moment, the hummingbirds and rabbits rule the forest. Here, nature isn't your guest. You are nature's guest.
What makes this Cabin unique
We think the most beautiful time of the day is the sunset and sunrise... On the porch you can enjoy this daily. At night, the sky brighter than elsewhere, and the moonlight/reflection against the lake looks as if it was photographed by a rover on another planet. There are many reasons why we fell in love with this cabin, however instead of going into every detail, we'll just let the pictures speak for themselves.

Majestic Mountain Getaway
This majestic house is very impressive, located near the top of a mountain overlooking Lake Pend Oreille, in East Hope, Idaho. Richard, the owner, met us at the bottom of the mountain road and guided us up to the property, then stayed long enough to be sure we had everything we needed. He even left us a complimentary bottle of wine and a very nice welcome note. During our stay, he responded very well to all of our enquiries about the area including very good advice for our hiking adventures. He guided us to the Schweitzer Mountain Resort as the best overall view of the lake and surrounding area. Excellent Advice! Birders will love this area as we were fortunate enough to find Bald Eagles and numerous nesting Osprey nearby. There are many dining choices on both sides of the lake and Sandpoint has convenient shopping and dining choices. We very much enjoyed our comfortable six-day stay and would not hesitate to recommend this wonderful place to everyone.
Amazing peaceful property
We loved our time at this property! The owners were amazing and responded quickly to any of our questions. They are very knowledgeable about the area and very nice people who make you feel very welcome.
The house has everything you need for your stay. We cooked most of our meals there and the appliances were newer and easy to use. The beds were very comfortable. There are 2 bedrooms and then a pullout couch in the living room. Lots of hot water and loved the shower upstairs with the shower heads on both sides. The house is very spacious and well laid out. The bear carvings on the step posts are beautiful. So many neat details within the home. The mantel has carvings as well. The light fixture in the our bedroom had a wild life scene. Love all these neat touches.
From the deck you can enjoy a coffee and watch the lake and the mountains in the background. Having the garage available was perfect as we brought our boat and we were able to tuck it away and go.
The free boat launch was only about 5 minutes up the road and was set up very nicely with lots of parking and a turnaround. The lake was crystal clear and there was a public island that was beautiful to hang out on. This property is not far from Sandpoint if you need anything. It is a nice central spot for touring into Montana or heading out to Spokane or Couer D'alene. Silverwood Theme Park and Boulder Beach are about an hour away depending on traffic.
We would highly recommend this property and we hope to go back next year and many more to come!
Very quite location with amazing views night and day would stay here again
This is going to go down as one of the best get away from it all vacation stays we have ever had! The pictures simply do not do this place justice. Quiet, peaceful and elegant with an excellent equipped kitchen, laundry room and bathrooms. We only had one meal that we didn’t cook ourselves in the 8 nights that we stayed here and the kitchen had everything we needed and a lot of things we didn’t need. Gorgeous view from the huge deck!
We corresponded with the owners several times before and during our stay and everything we asked them was answered quickly but if we had read all the information provided we would not have had to contact them at all; so once you book, read all the information on rental.
This is very secluded, quiet and peaceful rental perfect to get away from everything. From the property we never saw a single person but we did see and hear lots of wildlife including frequent hummingbird visits. We will definitely be back!!
This was an amazing family experience for us! Richard was the consummate host: whatever we needed, he was willing to assist, and ALWAYS with a positive, upbeat attitude and demeanor. The cabin was clean & comfortable, a great place for a family - or a couple - to sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the area. We highly recommend this rental home, and we hope our schedule allows us to return in the future. Thank you, Richard, for a wonderful stay!
This house is absolutely stunning and very quiet. The house is gorgeous and clean. It was like staying in a palace compared to what we usually rent. Worth every penny!
This vacation house is made for people who want to flee from stress and are looking for relaxation and peace....
The deer love to say "Good Morning" to you and will be right in your yard. Bears can be seen as much as moose, rabbits, hummingbirds and elk.
This vacation home provides a peaceful environment. It is less a party place than a contemplation place...
When you want to get your groceries you have to drive about 30 minutes to Sandpoint. There, you can also find a cinema, a lot of friendly bars and cafes and great shopping possibilities.
In winter time the "Schweitzer Mountain Resort" invites you for skiing and snowboarding (30 miles distance).
