Head west from the town of Lolo to Lolo Pass and beyond and take time to hike to Jerry Johnson Hot Springs. Travel south through the Bitterroot Valley as far as Lost Trail and Chief Joseph Passes while enjoying the grace and majesty of the Bitterroot peaks. Venture east to historic Butte, setting for the Montana Folk Festival in July, or the delightful town of Phillipsburg, home of the Sapphire Gallery. For bicyclists, the scenic Bitterroot Trail extends from Missoula through Hamilton and provides a safe, paved surface to explore the Bitterroot Valley. The Trail is minutes away from home. Hikers may choose from dozens of well-marked, scenic trails along the Bitterroot Range.

The rivers, streams, and lakes of western Montana are renowned fisheries. In addition, they provide myriad opportunities for boaters, rafters, canoeists, and kayakers. Any number of local businesses would love to outfit and/or guide water adventure-seeking visitors. This home is a 20 minute walk to the Bitterroot River where guests can stroll and fish along the river’s channels in Chief Looking Glass State Park. Evenings around the fire pit and stargazing are a perfect end to an exciting day. This home away from home awaits you!

About Marlene Baughman

I'm Marlene (my nickname). My husband, Mick, and I own this vacation rental in addition to pursuing careers as a pharmacy technician and insurance adjuster specializing in heavy equipment losses. We live next door to this rental and are available to our guests before and during your stay to help make your vacation as comfortable as possible. We can be available as needed, but are very respectful of our guests' privacy.

We love gardening and landscaping (when we have time), campering, motorcycling, golf, hiking, biking, skiing, family and friends. I have practiced yoga for more than half my life with local instructors as well as maintaining a personal practice.

We have a 7-year old Australian Shepherd, the alpha dog in our family, an ancient cat, and (at last count) eleven chickens.

Why Marlene Baughman chose Florence

What makes this house unique

We love the view from the deck, the kitchen/dining area, the warmth in winter, the coolness in summer, the brisk fall air, and the promise of spring.

"Bitterrooters" of western Montana are very partial to their neck of the woods. The uncommon majesty of the Bitterroot and Sapphire Peaks inspired Lewis and Clark and settlers who followed (including us). The Bitterroot River and its main feeders, The West Fork and East Fork of the Bitterroot River are fisheries for cutthroat and rainbow trout, and provide extensive stretches of scenic waterway for floating. Hikers and backpackers find miles of back-country trails to explore, pick huckleberries, and wade or dunk in the creeks along the trails. Bicyclists will love the Bitterroot Trail connecting Missoula and Hamilton. As it parallels Hwy. 93, a rider is nearly always in view of the mountains and foothills. Check in with Adventure Cycling in Missoula for the latest in cycling western Montana and...beyond.

In addition to the ranching and farming tradition that was the basis for settlement in the Bitterroot, the area is a haven for artists of all genres. Shops and galleries offer locally crafted visual, wearable, and functional art.

We live to ski, whether it's Alpine, cross-country, or back-country. Snowbowl in Missoula (30 miles), Discovery Basin in Anaconda(120 miles), and Lost Trail Pass (60 miles) on Hwy. 93 are popular destinations for locals as well as visitors to western Montana. Powder Mountain at Lost Trail Pass is our favorite for the powder and atmosphere. X-Country aficionados head east from Lost Trail Pass to Chief Joseph Pass for some of the finest tracking available.

The University of Montana and Grizzly football are institutions in western Montana, and this home is close enough to allow fans to enjoy a Grizzly rout, then return home to continue the celebration. Live music - all genres - flourishes in Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley. The Top Hat Lounge in Missoula books some of the most eclectic acts to be enjoyed many nights of the week. The Wilma Theatre, also in Missoula, books well-known artists throughout the year. Our newest outdoor venue, the Kettle House Ampitheatre, seats 4000 along the Blackfoot River during the summer season. And, in Hamilton, the Performing Arts Series treats locals to music of the world stage. The River City Roots Fest takes place in Missoula in August just as students return and we all need a reason to take to the streets to listen and dance to some amazing bluegrass and funk.

Our hospitals, St. Patrick (a Providence Institution) and Community Medical Center in Missoula, are a Top 50 Heart Center and Maternity Center respectively. Marcus Daly Medical Center is a small, but caring hospital in the town of Hamilton. There is a highly respected health clinic in Florence less than 5 miles from this home. We would love to work with patients and families to enhance healing.

Perfect place.

  • 5 of 5

This place was perfect for our stay. My friend and our kids were attending concerts in Missoula. Even though it is 20 minutes outside of Missoula it was not a problem. For the most part it was easy to find. Just be aware of Apple maps. they had me go to the wrong address on the right street. Marlene was friendly and willing to help in any way. There was 3 bedrooms with a futon in the upstairs general area. The house was clean and well kept.

Best Vacation Rental Ever

  • 5 of 5

We have rented a number of vacation rentals and by far this one has been the best. Marlene and Mick's property is wonderful. The house is very inviting. It has plenty of room for a fairly large family but we only had 3. Everything in the house and on the grounds is so clean and they provide so much of the necessities (not just a starter amount). From toilet paper and paper towels to detergent and soap, nothing was left out. The furniture was comfortable and the linens were plush and plentiful. We arrived to a plate of delicious cookies and were treated to fresh pressed apple cider later in the week. The location is perfect. Missoula is minutes away and the surrounding smaller towns are even closer. The purpose of our visit was to spend time with our son, daughter-in-law, and 2 precious granddaughters. They were just a very few minutes away in Florence, MT. We plan to make this our "place to stay" when coming to Montana if at a all possible. I cannot truly express what a wonderful experience we had in this home. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone looking for accommodations in this area. Come and see for yourself! Thanks again, Marlene and Mick! Hope to see you again fairly soon!

We have stayed at several HomeAway locations and this was the very BEST!

  • 5 of 5

We had an extraordinary experience at this location! The house and grounds are beautiful. We loved the design and layout of the house. There is a wonderful and spacious master bedroom with a vaulted ceiling, sitting area, cedar closet and private bathroom. There is also a second bedroom and bath on the first floor. The living room and dining area are so comfortable and spacious as well. We also loved the upstairs area, which has a wonderful sitting area complete with a chess table and so many games, puzzles and interesting books. The upstairs bedroom is terrific, with multiple skylights and windows that capture an amazing view of the mountains and surrounding areas. There is so much storage space, and an awesome bathroom, complete with an extra large tub. The entire upstairs is ideal for a two family situation, offering additional privacy. The house is unbelievably clean and organized. They have thought of absolutely everything you might need, with a well-stocked kitchen and all kinds of amenities in the bathrooms. We even played a little game of trying to think of something the owner's should add to the place, but we came up with nothing! We had use of the garage and there is plenty of extra parking space as well. There were even lawn games waiting for us on the spacious covered deck in the front of the house. Marlene Baughman was so friendly and welcoming, and was available if we needed anything at all! When we arrived there were homemade cookies on the table and fresh-laid eggs in the fridge. A/C and Ceiling fans were on and the house was perfect temperature. We didn't have to search at all for Montana and surrounding-area information, as there are so many helpful tourist guides, maps, and guide books well-placed throughout the house. We wanted to be in Missoula for some of our time, and we were delighted that is was only a short and very scenic drive to get there. For the past 4 years our two families have traveled together to this area to spend time with our daughter and son-in-law. We love Montana, and we have always enjoyed every minute of our time there, but THIS place was absolutely PERFECT! We are so looking forward to staying at this lovely home again.
